Some examples of apps that do not support the latest security standards include:

The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad with version 6 or below
The Mail app on your Windows phone preceding the 8.1 release
Some Desktop mail clients like Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird

What exactly is Google considering insecure about Mozilla-based mail
clients?

To restore access I had to change a G-Mail setting to allow access by
insecure apps.

I'm getting the same nonsense from them, but
I have more than 5 computers accessing the same account plus 2 phones. one is
an android 6.0.1.
I used to think Google was one of the good guys.
Now, I'm not so sure.
Google "ceased" being one of the good guys (if they ever were) when they
quietly dropped the motto "do no evil".

IMHO of course.

I shouldn't follow up my own post, but can't let my ignorance stand.

There should be a law that Google prominently post a contact phone number.
Their hiding is unacceptable.

Same thing: made my hair stand on end (ok, hairs) - eventually I changed
password on all devices.

Or you could have switched authentication method to OAuth2. SeaMonkey
supports it now.

Probably because it's an old version of SM.

I'm using the latest release version, 2.49.1.

Hmm, the other day I got a security notice from Google about "We’ve
upgraded the Security Checkup to give you specific, personalized
recommendations to strengthen the security of your Google Account." and
when I checked it out it had to do with giving/disabling App Permissions
to some apps. Could it be that? Log into the Web UI of your GMail
account. Once you're logged in, go to
https://myaccount.google.com/security-checkup. Onec at the Security
Checkup page, click on Third Party Access and make sure it's on. If
that's already on, go to the Settings for your GMail account and click
the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab and make sure POP Download is not set
to Disable POP.
