http://freenetproject.org/snapshots/seednodes.ref now contains several
stable noderefs, so if your stable node needs reseeding, you should be
able to do it. New nodes should be able to connect to several other
nodes and therefore become part of the network. As this will have
prevented new users from using freenet at all, it seemed to be a fairly
high priority.
I recently had my IP changed, and after that I experienced Freenet (which
was perfectly usuable from my node before) acted worse. I thought I could
fix it by reseeding ..

.. and that was a major mistake. Now Freenet is, for all purposes, dead
here. I cannot even get the bookmarks of the web interface.

So - stable nodes with a working network might want to export their seeds
so that the rest of us can join in again :) I guess the situation I ended
up with now is the same as for new nodes - and as Toad pointed out - that
needs to be fixed ASAP.

Subject: [freenet-support] Request for help: Seednodes harvesting
notworking well

Would the owners of soros.ca and freenet.teitel.net please mail me to
 the effect that either:
 a) They will be running the node on unstable for the foreseeable future.
 or
 b) They will be running it on stable.

We also urgently need reliable permanent stable branch nodes to read
seednodes from. We currently have a stable noderef file full of unstable
nodes, consequently we are not gaining any new users because stable
won't talk to unstable! I have started my stable node, but I don't like
the seednodes relying on my nodes for several reasons:
 1. I like to turn off the stable node to speed up the unstable node.
 2. I like to turn off the stable node for gaming.
 3. I like to turn off both nodes for debugging major changes such as
 muxing.
 4. The project doesn't pay me enough to throw more hardware at this.

Bottom line: we need more nodes on both stable and unstable branches to
serve as seednode sources. All you need to do is either
 a) Grant access from dodo.freenetproject.org (use the IP,
212.13.198.248), to your web interface (the implications are obvious :(
 ) OR
 b) Run a cron job to download http://local web
 interface/servlet/nodestatus/noderefs.txt?minConnections=1 to a file,
and upload that file to somewhere we can wget it from, OR
 c) Run a cron job to download it and mail it to us. This would require
 additional work.

CONDITION: You should not switch your node from one branch to another
without prior warning by email to me, once you are in the seednodes.

I was attempting to fix the problem of there being no stable seednodes
that actually work. In other words, any new nodes (unless installed by
someone who knows what they are doing) will immediately fail, not talk
to any other nodes, and give no semblance of working. As opposed to the

I apologize for not following either the lists or my inbox closely over
the last few days, I got back from a short xmas break with a huge
backlog and it seemed more important to get multiplexing done on the
unstable branch. I will probably go through my mail tomorrow.

The best thing non-geek users can do is continue to run their nodes as
normally, and report any interesting behaviours or error messages. We
need people running nodes on both the stable and unstable branches; if
you run a node on the unstable branch, you must update your node every
24 hours. If you are running a permanent, reasonably stable node on a
reasonable broadband connection (DSL or cable modem), without any
special firewalling problems, you should contact me and we can talk
about using your node as a seednodes source. This is easier if you are
on linux or other unixen.

Meanwhile, on the stable branch, 5051 has a significant bugfix that
should improve the network performance, and on the unstable branch,
multiplexing has been committed, which should, once debugged (that may
take some time!), improve performance and reduce resource usage in a
variety of ways.
