Hi
I've simply used (an old) Zoom H2 SD-card recorder.
I have usually set it for mp3 for lecture recordings (good enough audio
quality and lots of duration) and selected a fig of eight mono recording,
so that possible questions from the audience also get recorded
(at least somehow).

I use an iPod with the Rode Smartlav using the RodeRec app. If you do use a
phone, ensure you have enough memory as many people have their phones filled
with apps, music and photos.

If it was serious, it would have a tone generator across all four B format
outputs to allow you to accurately calibrate your recorder.
I asked sound field to do this, and they ignored it when doing the 450 and
450/2.
