Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season. It
is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future
year. It is today that we fit ourselves for the greater usefulness of
tomorrow. Today is the seed time, now are the hours of work, and tomorrow
comes the harvest and the playtime. W.E.B. Du Bois

[sustainable_tompkins-l] IMMEDIATE RELEASE: County Seeks Input on Local Regulation of Renewable Energy Systems

2017-03-23 Thread Anna Kelles
*County Seeks Input on Local Regulation of Renewable Energy Systems*

The Tompkins County Department of Planning and Sustainability is holding a
public meeting on Wednesday March 29, from 6:00 – 7:30 PM in the Borg
Warner Room of the Tompkins County Public Library. The County is asking
participants to identify any concerns they have with the deployment of wind
and solar energy systems and local regulation of those developments. The
Department will be sharing the input with local government officials.

This is the second public meeting on renewable energy systems and was added
due to the heavy weather in the two days preceding the first public
meeting.

Tompkins County has established a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions
by 80% by 2050. In order to achieve this long-term goal, the recently
completed Energy Roadmap identified an interim goal of developing 50% of
the county’s solar potential, 20% of its wind potential, and 20% of its
micro-hydro potential.

The Department of Planning and Sustainability is committed to promoting
renewable energy systems that also addresses public concerns with their
deployment. Towards that end, the Department is preparing a series of
recommendations for local governments as they draft language to regulate
solar and wind energy systems in anticipation of more widespread
development of these systems. Several municipalities have established local
zoning and site plan regulations to address deployment of wind and solar
energy systems, others have not.

Members of the public who have interest in or concerns with the regulation
and development of renewable energy systems in Tompkins County are
encouraged to attend the meeting. The meeting will feature a presentation
on different types of renewable energy systems and potential regulations.
The majority of the time will be devoted to gathering public reaction to
these important points. Written comments will also be accepted through
March 24.

Questions and comments may be directed to the Tompkins County Department of
Planning and Sustainability, 121 East Court Street, Ithaca, 274-5560,

Abraham Lincoln is credited with saying “The best way to predict your future is
to create it.” Democracy enables Americans to create our future when we vote
for our representatives on Election Day. Beyond elections, our vote can count
every day with how we spend our money and through our actions.
Do you want to make your vote count every day? The League of Women Voters has
led the environmental protection movement for decades, consistently supporting
legislation to preserve our nation’s natural resources and protect against
public health effects of climate change. Science demonstrates what's best for
the Earth is also what's best for you. Now more than ever, the League is
working to ensure that the public is educated on issues affecting the climate
and the air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil that grows our food.
In support of the League’s effort to respect the environment and address the
impacts of climate change, the League of Women Voters of NYS introduces Be
Earthwise, our new campaign to engage all Americans from every state to learn
the facts, vote with your dollars and vote with your daily actions to preserve
our planet.
Stay tuned to vote with your Be Earthwise dollars and Be Earthwise actions on
Earth Day, April 22, 2017. Thank you for making democracy work.

The Be Earthwise Pledge
I’ll vote with my dollars. I PLEDGE to respect the environment and address the
effects of climate change when making my consumer purchases.
I’ll vote with my actions. I PLEDGE to respect the environment and the address
effects of climate change through my daily activities.
I’ll participate in our democracy. I PLEDGE to take action as a citizen to help
shape public policy that respects the environment and addresses the effects of
climate change.
