02/21/2001 - Pennsylvania Offers $1,500 to Hybrid EV Buyers Harrisburg, Pennsylvania - The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is now offering $1,500 to buyers of hybrid-electric vehicles as part of the more than $7 million the agency is offering for alternative-fuel program grants. State residents, along with school districts, local governments, corporations, nonprofit organizations are invited to apply for the funding for projects promoting the use of alternative fuels. The grants can help pay for things such as purchasing alternative-fuel vehicles, building refueling and recharging stations, and researching and developing new alternative-fuel technologies. To date, DEP has awarded nearly $17 million to fund 165 projects in 33 counties. The deadline for applications is April 23. Grants awarded this year under the Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant (AFIG) Program will cover up to 30 percent of the applicant's eligible costs. One-third of Pennsylvania's ozone emissions stem from gasoline-powered vehicles and refueling operations.
