Dear List members,
I need your ideas of what went worng with my
washing
I make 45 l batches for almost a year now and I
have only had minor emulsion problems
in the first wash that I could handle pretty good
with hot water or some vinegar.
I make BD from WVO with 2 stage base - base,
tions (BD failed quality tests).
The problem may be an incomplete reaction.
Quality test will tell.
Why did it show up in
5th wash, not first or second
I could only speculate.
Let me know how the
quality test goes,
Tom

Hi Andrew;
Is the water you used conditioned by a water softener?

Hello,
I have 2 advise for you
1. build a reactor with cone-shaped bottom, and
insulate it well,
2. Start draining the by product as soon as you
practically can ( 99% of glicerin separates within 2 hors)
You may still have problems with draining (

Hi Rafal,
If it is virgin oil from the supermarket, you should not worry about water.
I had the same problem in my early batches, and I think it is the lye.

This eay you have an idea and a feel for the process.
What you should look for is a
Joe,
My experience with recovered methanol is that it
alway contains some water.
I dont have a hydrometer, but I see my methoxide
turning milky white as it desolves.
At first I worried about the water contant, but
my batches showed no loss of quality with recoevered
Hello Golan,
do you have some brown powder in the side of your
wash tank after the emulsion?
I had exectly the same problem 2 months
ago.
It was in the 4th wash. Also stir washed it 3 times
with beautifull separation.
and the 4th wash was a heavy foam. I had to do 3
more washes and to my

I also have no explanation to mine.

What are you people talking about?
have you ever made any type of biofuel?
Seems to me that you are confusing them
all.
Acid Base process and ethanol fuel?
Methanol vs ethanol? It has sense in biodiesel
production, but you are talking
alcohol fuel for petroleum engines.
Does not
Hi Rafal,
Do not overcomplicate yourself.
1. Make sure that your oil is dry.
2. Make sure that your methanol dry, and lye fresh
3. Reaction parameters - time, temperature, agitation are OK.
4. Settlig time 24 Hours +
5 Wash test from the upper layer of reaction wessel. - If failed try +1gr
lye.
Why do you want to reduce the idine value???
The standard stand for commercial BD makers so they can only use
virgin rapeseed oil
I also live in Europe and process restorant WVO
usually palm fat. I get Great BD from it and it is more resistant
to polimerisation. Only disadvantage is winter time.
Methanol price in Europe just fell from 420 EURO to 250 / 1000 Liter
Valid from 04.01.

Hi,
I can get my hands on 1 ton of fresh beef tallow
from a local slauther house weekly.
The sample I got has parts of meets on it. It is
really a disgusting stuff.
I will try to get some oil from it today and make
test batches for BD.
Does anybody have experience with this stuff, how

Joe,
In my well isolated reactor the tempreture stays above 55 deg for 3 hours.
so the amount of enregy needed goes in with the initial heating and this is
independent from
how long I process my fuel. In fact I use mechanical stirrer wich means
there is no heat loss
in the tubes outside tubes,
Hello Keith,
I am having trouble to find pressure stove suitable
for BD.
I have browsed through the links from JTF with
little sucess.
The PETROMAX is quite expensive and is out of stock
anyway.
others I find come with wick which you say is not
working with BD
On JTF website you write
you are right. We are using between 200 - 250 ml
methanol / liter oil
start with 250 and when you get good results try
going down to 200
it will make cheaper fuel.
when you are confident with the process try
methanol recovery from the by product layer.
follow instructions
I have processed 100% virgin beef tallow fat with the 2 stage base - base
process
with great sucess. I used 200 ml methanol / liter fat and 6.7 g NaOH
Processed for 2 x 2hours at 58 - 60 deg C.
That batched washed better and easier then any other WVO I had dealt with
The only drawback is cold
Hello guys,
I had similar issues with recovered
methanol.
when it is wet you will have milyky white methoxide
when you add the NaOH.
My solution is that I use recovered methanol only
30% the rest is always fresh.
and stop the destillation just below 100 deg
C.
this way I've been having
Hello,
I hav also red about algees before and got me into thinking about a ship

plant flooting around the oceans.
I would be into something like this.
Do we have any info on how to...???
Andrew
A commercial facility has produced the first biodiesel derived from
wild sewage algae
Hello,
I am interested too

I am building my new 300 liter wash tank and have a 300W motor with 1300 rpm
I want to connect it to a stirrer 160 mm in diameter ( 6 inch).
Should I do it directly or reduce the rpm???
I have been stir washing for more than a year with a hand drill but I have

Dear list members,

mayonnaise that can take days to a week or more to separate.

James,
Thank you for your reply.
Do you know how can I add sulfur?
What was your final conclusion with the experiment?
Do you still use it or not?
Thanks

Hello Joe,
My experience is that I get about 96%-100% yield for the whole process.
In your terms 100ml VWO - 96ml finished BD
I wash 5 times stirring with a paint stirrer.
If you are carefull then you dont use BD during the wash. (at least you
should not)
What you loose is contaminents like
