[Biofuel] mixing oil

2005-11-18 Thread Juan B
Hello People,

I got different kinds of providers of oil (virgin Oil, waste oil, and
animal tallow) I was wondering whether I could make one big mix and
process it together. Of course, doing the right titration process and
filtering the waste oil and animal tallow.

could it be done?

Thanks
Juan

[Biofuel] Compost with Broccoli

2005-11-09 Thread Juan B

I have a waste by-product of 50 tons monthly of Broccoli and I
would like to start doing something with it. Instead of throwing to the
trash I would like to make compost (active) and I would like to build a
small digester so Methane gas can be produced.

Could someone help me with this. BTW , I finally manage to get good quality of BD , its lovely and a small truck is using it.

thanks in advance

I was reading your post and it was a symphony to my eyes and mind. I am

it.

I would like to know where I could find more information related to this kind of reaction or process.

Well here is an update for what it's worth; I have been conducting experiments in a test tube with 20 ml new canola oil and fresh industrial grade methanol. As per the suggestion I
started with smaller electrode gap and lower voltage to obtain the 15 to 20 v/mm field strength as required in the abstract.Electrode configuration is a rod sharpened to a point to concentrate field
strength adjacent to a flat plate.Electrode material is copper. Mixture is an emulsion of 20% (v/v) methanol agitated by a stir bar and heated to 60 degrees centigrade. With a gap of 1mm I increased the
applied voltage eventually to 120 Vdc which is the limit of my (little) supply. There was very little current (in the tens of microamperes) at this stage.I expected to see bubbles at the anode but the cloudiness
of the emulsion made this difficult.A solution with disolved methanol saturated (I do not know the exact percentage as some methanol remained undisolved on the surface) which is optically clear did not exhibit any
gas generation. Next I increased the gap to 3 mm and brought out the scary supply.I installed a 300 ma fuse at the HV output to protect the innocent and a milliameter. Then, fire extinguisher in hand, I tried again. At
roughly 2kv the dielectric breakdown occured with 3mm gap for a Vbr of about 670 V/mm.Of course there were many bubbles in that case.No explosion though which was nice.Interestingly the protection fuse was
not taken out by the arc whch was my expectation. At this point I do not know if this fact is due to the internal resistance of the supply limiting current to a value the fuse could handle for the brief duration
of the arc or whether current was limited by conditions within the arc. I will have to do a short circuit test of the supply tonight to find out if it really has the balls to do 300 mA as I expect it should.
Since the abstract calls for 100% conversion and with excess methanol a etherified glycerine which remains in solution, it is not clear what to expect the end result to look like. There should not be a separation of
layers as in the traditional chemically catalyzed reaction.Since I do not see bubbles I do not think much is happening. I wish I knew more chemistry.I expect the reaction should take place on the surface of
the anode and it should not be in the presence of an arc.Close observation at the tip at a voltage just below breakdown reveals a tiny whisker of something black (carbon??) grows towards the cathode and
dances in the swirling current until it gets close enough and precipitates another arc. This could be something very interesting but I expect it has nothing to do with fuel :-( . The abstract does talk about very high temperatures at the anode surface
and a strong oxidizing environment which makes me wonder if an arc is supposed to be sustained?Anyone on the list care to comment? Asside from proton NMR at this point I do not know how to shed more
light on the contents of the test tube after these shocking experiments. This will require negotiations and the consumption of beer... I wish I had some exciting news Joe
David Miller wrote: Joe Street wrote: Hi Joe; Right. The abstract talks about a relationship between higer

I missed the beginning of the thread, but it sounds like you're on a great test to see if you can refine something with an electric field. I just wanted to make two comments to try and help.
 1) Cetane rating is a measure of the ignitability of the fuel.A high cetane rating is good in a diesel engine because it means the fuel starts combustion as soon as it's injected. It's the opposite of
octane, which is a measure of a fuels ability to not ignite. Neither has anything to do with energy content, they're just measures of ignition properties. 2) If you're looking for electrochemical effects they're quite
certainly subject to electric field strength, not absolute voltage differential. This is

Latest news is that the military is actually looking into hybridizing their HumVees. That would, to me, be utterly hilarious, since they already perform better and more economically for their driving conditions than any of the
civilian models (Barring the H1, which was essentially military equipment repainted and sold to consumers).Other interesting thing to note: The Hummers have been getting bigger, weaker, and less fuel efficient with every new model coming out. Their
performance has also degraded in every category but one or two. They're becoming less and less a real performer and more and more a fuel-hog show vehicle.I personally can't stand them, both for their size and the attitude that
comes with them. Most drivers of SUVs in general act like they own the road, and it annoys me to no end. Everything is relative folks.I would hope that all those that argue
againstSUV's are walking or pedal cycling most of their miles. What I'm saying might belargely tongue in cheek but it is the logical extension...As wasteful as theyare in transporting humans, those Hummers could well be running on bio.
Respect,GarySo does this mean I can go start letting the air out of SUV tires? I bike 30 miles a day, round trip to and from work, and take the bus system whenever I'm going it's way. ^.~

Hi Brian,

About the Peugeot 505, If the smoke is blue and white, your car is
burning oil, this could be the o rings of the pistons or a liking
gasket on the head of the engine. About the coolant, it seems
that one of the lines are blocked I would recommend you to flash the
cooling system of the engine and to clean the hoses maybe there is
something there that is blocking the flow.

I hope that could help

turbo charged diesel vehicle! I know what you are thinking, What's aAmerican good ol' boy' doing with a Peugeot? Well, it is a longstory, the short version is: If we live our lives in a spiritually
wholesome and environmentally friendly fashion,we can expect goodthings to come to us. We don't need much and we have patience. Anyway,I said this is the short version right? We now have this car sitting
here at the Ranch in northeastern New Mexico. It has only onemechanical problem that I can see; It is very hard to start, when itfinally does it bellows blue-white smoke, and the coolant lines slowlybegin to pressurize. The radiator hoses balloon up, very scary and we
shut it down before they blow. At first glance it looks like a leakinghead gasket. It is now sitting in front of my little workshop and I amso excited to finally have a car that I can make my own biodiesel for.
Nevertheless, my rash days are past and I am content to ask firstbefore I tear into anything mechanically. I ask for information.I amrelatively new to Biofuels, but I do have a fine set of Mechanicstools, much updated from the days long ago when I was a factory
trained VW mechanic. Please don't give me the negative perspective. If you do, I can take it. But I still have that wonderful glowa guygets when he gets a new car to refurbish. How's that line go? Sing me the bad news!
So far I have zero cash investment in this really cute little car. Ihave three Mercedes gas powered monsters which have been steadilymoving closer to the ranch dump. I toyed with the idea of buying a
1982 300 Turbo Sedan that a friend has offered for $2000.00. I don'tlike the body style, too heavy, and we couldn't afford it anyway. This Peugeot is almost 1000 pounds lighter than my 1980 480SE. Anddamn, did I say it is sleek and in mint condition? So yeah that's the
good news. Anybody out there have any experience with these? Lookslike a very clean engine, but that may be because the radiator alreadywashed it off with a steam bath. I have extended experience withpetrol vehicles. My tools are metric and I love to read first then
spin nuts after I at least think I understand.Diesel engines, this is only my second. I won't say what I did to thefirst one. I intend to make this motor sing again! So, I have heard ofcarbon buildup in the cylinders causing issues in dino-diesel motors.
Any ideas? Things I could check. I suppose checking the compressionthrough the spark plug holes is out of the question, lol. I will belooking for the factory service manual, unless it is written in Frenchof course. Nah, I have factory service literature on the Benz and it
is not in German. See how wishy washy I have become? Maybe it is thefog this morning, yeah fog in New Mexico, go figure. They have fog inFrance right? So how did my bio-diesel processing chemicals and WVO collecting go
this week? Not well, physically. I talked it up pretty good, whateverthat is worth. I think I know what I need to find for the testbatches. A couple of little bottles of Heet (methanol).Blue oryellow? There is a bit of confusion in the biofuel group about this,
and a jar of Red Devil drain opener (lye.) A five gallon can fortransporting the WVO back to the ranch and a 12 volt pump for fillingmy container at the rear of the Mc Donald's. Oh, and I have to askVince, the owner of the local McDonald's, if is ok to use some of the
WVO from his business.Ok, I am so excited about our new diesel that I am totally tornbetween writing and thinking about it and going out into the fog andstarting… something, anything… How about learning?
