I just purchased a Grumman Olson Kubvan.  It is a Volkswagen Diesel
powered van that is all aluminum.  There are a few still floating
around.  If you can find one they are easy to work on.

I bought an old ambulance off of ebay. Most if not all are diesel powered and 
you can get a great deal if you shop around.

Have even seen some diesel vans on there that were not ambulances.
