DONG Energy transforms its Studstrup plant from coal to biomass
11/10/2016
Denmark's DONG Energy declared it has changed one unit of its Studstrup
power plant in Aarhus to function on wood pellets instead of coal, while
the second unit will be deferred, aiding to reduce carbon emissions.
The 1.3 billion crown ($195.7 million) transformation would permit
Denmark's second-biggest city to cut emissions by 310,000 tonnes yearly
since it wants to become carbon-neutral by 2030, as stated by the
company on Monday. The 360 megawatt capacity unit will be able to
provide heating to over 100,000 Danish homes and power to approximately
230,000 homes using biomass. The second unit of a similar size, which
has been operating on coal, will be put on reserve, signifying that it
could be activated within a month, according to a spokesman. The firm
has previously told the Nordic electricity market it programmed to
mothball the unit from April 2017.
