Re: [Biofuel] Animal Intelligence -- Was: New question on oil seed crops and ley farming

Crows and ravens are particularly smart birds, capable of imitative
(deceptive) calls, and teamwork in hunting. I have seen three crows herd a
pheasant toward a fourth crow who killed it, and then all four ate.

But humour, that's the least expected part of the animal world: horses tell
jokes! Some of them are hilarious! Geese play and enjoy life! As you say
Robert: it's just not on a linguistic level. This is the part that makes
killing them really weird. I'm not vegan but I sure see their point of
view.

Animals aren't dumb. Their intelligence isn't language based, like
ours is, so it's hard for us to understand them. They comprehend some
of our words and are highly skilled at interpreting our body language,
but when my cat Liberty struts up and meows at me, I sometimes wonder
if he's thinking: You STUPID human, can't you figure out what I want?

With all my brains and all my tools I can't catch mice 1/10th as well as
my cat can.

Experiments show the humble bird is better than the chimp at toolmaking.

This doesn't surprise me. I've seen a crow take a hazelnut onto the
road, place it in front of my tires, then hop off the road and wait
until I passed by. In the rearview mirror, I watched that bird hop
back out and devour the hazelnut I'd crushed as I ran over it. Crows
are a LOT smarter than people think!

Then, there's my domestic cat, Destiny. She is able to open a
sliding screen door. Yesterday, she wanted to get into a closet with
an accordion style door. I watched her experiment as she slid her paw
under one side and pulled, working her way from the end toward the
middle. Once she realized that she could loosen the door by pulling
from the middle, she returned to the end and simply pushed it open.
There's an example of multi step problem solving in what most of us
would consider a stupid feline.
