Yeah, I don't get it...is it new or a old? It sounds like it is newly
produced with original (leftover?) parts. What's most important to you
about owning an Akalabeth? Is it the original parts or that it was one of
the original ones sold? If it is just the parts...Garriott could go into
business selling hundreds of these at $1000+ a pop. Let's not even get into
the counterfeiting possibilities here.

RE: [SWCollect] THE Auction!

2001-10-29 Thread Hugh Falk

I wonder how long he has been doing this? Joe Garrity, who runs the Origin
museum, was under the impression that he was getting an original from
Richard Garriot...but maybe it was just one like this? He won it at the
Ultima Online convention about a year ago. It was auction off by
Origin/Richard Garriott.

The disk is new, but everything else is old. Old meaning the parts were
pulled from Garriott's unsold stock, but were never sold back in 1980. Not
as desirable as one of the original 12, but someone out there is bound to
pay $1000 for it.

Heh, I'll wait for one of the original 12 :) I have the disk already (this disk, not one of the 12). Wonder how many of these are out there, Jason sold one exactly like this for 6K.

This copy of the game was produced in the past year by Richard Garriott
himself and sent to us when we helped him locate some 5.25
double-sided, double-density disks recently. All the materials date back
to 1980 with the exception of the diskette itself. Even the label is
original.

Are re-assembled versions of games worth as much as the original package
from 20+ years ago? My argument is no. While this is definitely
worth a lot, I don't think it warrants more than $1000.

I also pay a $5 service fee?

Why is it the way it should be when the buyer pays the fees?

Because it is convenient for the buyer, they can pay online with Ccard

way to go. Heck collect with quick cash and pay with paypal, that way
you NEVER pay a fee :)

My thoughts are like this: If I'm paying *you* for an item, at *your*
price, then *you* should be the one paying the fees. Just my $0.02 (no
pun intended :-)

Also why should I pay paypal as a seller, I would rather just get a

Then just don't offer it as an option to the buyer. Of course, that may
limit your potential audience; I personally only bid on auctions where
there's some form of online payment like billpoint or paypal where I
don't have to pay fees. I only make exceptions for exceptional items.
Again, just my opinion.

Speaking of ebay, are you selling? I keep checking tommage from time to

Regardless why not sign up and get the free $10 if even you don't use the acct. Plus it would help me test the referal link to make sure you get the $5 bonus. I know the $10 works, already got it for two accts. Since this is fairly new the market is wide open, could make a mint off referals yourself after you sign up :)

[SWCollect] Every collector's nightmare

2001-10-29 Thread Jim Leonard

Well, actually I can think of some nightmares that come before this one,
in order:

1. Fire
2. Flooding
3. Theft or accidental loss
4. Discovering your originals are fakes or counterfeit
5. Auction/trade gone horribly, horribly wrong

..but I experienced #6 this weekend, and I thought I'd share it with
you.

I've been married for 7 years (I'm 30), but dated my wife for 4 years
before that, so I'd like to think that I know her really well. I do,
actually, which is why I could tell something was wrong this weekend.
It turns out that she was feeling neglected, and we started fighting.
The fight lasted, on and off, for about 3 hours, with me in the basement
with all my computers and stuff on the couch and her in the bedroom.

Now before I continue, I'd like to iterate that the fight was pretty
much *my fault* and *I was indeed a massive jerk* and *fully deserved
what I am about to describe to you*. My wife did NOT put me up to
writing that; rather, I wanted to state it because I don't want any of
you to feel differently about my wife: She is a very kind and loving
wife and mother, and I owe much of my success in life and our wonderful
children to her. I was solely responsible for the fight; I badgered
her, I was a jerk, and I deserved the consequences. Now, with that out
of the way, here's what happened:

She didn't want the fight to end with us hating each other seperated by
2 floors, so she came down and tried to work things out. I had been
stoked to a boil by that point and had no intention of working things
out, at least at that time of the night. She tried to get me to listen,
to work things out, to compromise -- but I didn't want anything to do
with it. So to get me to react, to do *anything*, she walked over to
one of my shelves, grabbed a box, and ripped it completely asunder.

So what did she grab? Not one of the 95%-of-my-collection
near-meaningless titles, but instead she had the incredible luck of
grabbing Countdown (Access, 1990), NOT the Slash release. It's no
Suspended mask or Starcross saucer, but I spent 6 months checking ebay
listings to find a non-Slash original of this, and paid a little bit
more what I thought it was worth because I wanted to a complete Access
adventure series (Martian Memorandum, Mean Streets, Countdown, and
Amazon). It had nostalgic worth, time-investment worth, and financial
worth to me.

Well, that pretty much ended the fight. I stopped being a complete jerk
and we made up. The moral of the story is: Your family is always more
important than your collection -- which should be common sense anyway
:-)

Anyone got a Countdown they'd be willing to sell or trade? ;-)

Re: [SWCollect] THE Auction!

2001-10-29 Thread C.E. Forman

I'd say half and half. For the disk, I would agree it's worth far less, as
it's this hobby's equivalent of a replica. For the other materials, though,
I would say they are worth a comparable amount, since they are originals.
True, they may have been held onto by Garriott all this time, rather than
in the wild, making them less desirable -- though, ironically, in better
condition -- than the 12 sold copies... but is this so different from new
old stock that's lain, unsold, in a basement or warehouse?
