I laughed my ass off when I figured out what it was and how it was
implemented. I mean, I was laughing the entire time. Either someone at
Origin was very clever, or very bored (or both).

A curious example for a future exercise would be a comparison of all of
them. I know that the Mac (or IIGS? Can't remember) versions of the
King's Quest 1 music put all other versions to shame, for example.

I would advertise that you have these available and people can email you
individually.

I've never seen it. I consider my two versions ("Classics" CDROM
release with both addons and speech, and original package with floppies)
the only ones produced. I am not an authority, but I would probably
have seen this (I *did* have the Shadow Master CD version, and it had a
special CD logo on it).

Chances are, that's Privateer II, not the original Privateer. I
specifically am wondering if a standard-box CD version of the original
Privateer (packaged with nothing else) exists. The budget-box version
isn't too hard to find (that's what's usually called "Privateer Gold"),
and the standard-box floppy version isn't tough to find either.

Incidentally, how many of you guys played the text adventure game that
came with the original Privateer? Another one came with the Righteous
Fire expansion pack. The text games themselves are small and nothing
special; what's amazing is how they were implemented. (It blew me away,
anyway.) These text games also weren't documented anywhere; one of the
puzzles was finding them and getting them to run.

I think Chris probably wants copies of these now, heh.

MIDI conversions of the Ultima III music have been out on the Web for a
long time. I don't know if the NES version has different music (it almost
certainly does), but that's also out there too.

Hmmm, I may have been hiding under a rock. I'm just poking around
vintage sites and places like ebay and discovering there were Apple II
versions of stuff I never knew was made for it (Marble Madness, Realm of
Impossibility, Magic Candle...) Some of the other stuff may have best
remained in anonyminity, but I'm grateful for the discussions that bring to
light the gems.

Huh. I vaguely recall seeing one on the shelf of the local Babbages.
It may be Privateer I or "Privateer Gold" or something, but I'll grab it for
you if you're interested. As long as its "Privateer I" in some form of
non-jewelcase, you're happy, yes?
On a totally unrelated note, a "Mockingboard Rev D" fell into my lap
last week. After 18 years, I'll finally know what the music to "Ultima III"
sounds like. Did the C64 version (or any other version) have the music?

Magic Candle I was actually very well advertised. Glossy flashy ads in
Computer Gaming World, not to mention a strong endorsement by Scorpia and
high ratings via ye olde RID, gave it a good presence.

II is a decent game, but combat becomes a serious drag later in the game;
III is below-average at best, as combat balance problems get even worse.
III's balance is also heavily biased in favor of transfers from II; if you
make characters from scratch prepare for lots of scratching for gold and
powering up. The first game remains reasonably well-balanced throughout.

Next time I play the first game in the series, I'm going to promise myself
not to exploit the gambling bug to hell and back. :)

Like many classic non-Ultima games, though, these are not worth a whole
lot if you don't have an IBM copy. Even then, I wouldn't expect a mint
sealed non-SLASH IBM Magic Candle to fetch more than about $40-50.

In case anyone is interested, I happen to have an extra clue book for this
now (though it's meant to be written in, and *is* written in -- heavily
written in). Now that I have space to actually shelve things, I'm getting
a chance to take duplicates, keep the best parts, and sell the rest; this
is one of the duplicates. Previosly I just didn't have the space to get
at both copies easily.

I'll probably have 50-60 duplicates (about 60% of them complete, about 80%
IBM) ready in a few weeks. I know this isn't a trading list, but I'll
give readers of this mailing list dibs. :)

Yeah, there's a "main" quest line Darklands, but as in, say, Privateer,
there's always more stuff to do.

Speaking of Privateer, is there a CD version that comes in a
standard-sized box? 'cause if there is, I haven't seen one, and would
like it. Even the budget box, which is all I've ever seen or heard of, is
worth $20 or so these days.

[SWCollect] Comments

2001-07-27 Thread Dan Chisarick

I was on this list for a few days, and its like 1-2 messages (unless I
was being filtered :) Now its like 30-40+ messages a day. Anyway...
Choplifter: A quick peek at the Copy ][+ 9.1 parameter file shows me no
entry for Choplifter. It may not be copyable using a standard Apple drive.
Hence, I don't know if anyone can actually make you even a DISK copy (I'm
just fully of optimism ain't I...)
Magic Candle: Irony of ironies, it was in my "watch" list for 7 days for
the Apple ][. Zero bids. I would have passed it by if it wasn't for some
comments about it. One other person bid on it at the last minute, but I
still got it. I never even knew there WAS an Apple ][ version of Magic
Candle! I blame lousy advertising. I'd say over 60% of my won auctions
come from California. Apple games don't seem to have made it much farther
than that. Also, when I think "Mindcraft", I think "Siege" (and the "Dogs
of War" Add-on). I love that thing.
Complete packages: Good box, disks, sleeves (where applicable), all
manuals and reference cards, and trinkets (maps, props, etc.). I don't
consider the warrenty cards or catalogs or disk exchange forms necessary to
consider something complete. I'm not too picky.
Refreshing originals: Bits is bits. So long as the bits are identical,
its original. I know some of my "out-of-the-box originals" I can see a
second label under the original disk (Microprose is famous for this). Its
reasonable to presume that was an "in-house" remastering from an RMAed disk.
Is it original? The disk is only the container. If JIFF peanutbutter
comes in a tub or a jar, its still the same stuff (the same does *not* apply
to beer coming in cans or bottles, however...)
Darklands: Just being picky about something I vaguely remember from
years ago... I think one of the patches upgraded the Readme.txt file (or
there was an FAQ or something) but somewhere from an "official" Microprose
text file, they summarized what you could consider winning. In addition to
the two main quests, I think you have to wipe all the robber barons, too.
Dunno. Did a quick look for it, couldn't find it.
Misc comment, I did a bandwidth test when I got my DSL modem last year.
I mirrored Microprose's "classic" section of their FTP site (patches for all
their old games, alternate pallets for M1 Tank Platoon, the disk-protection
removal patches, etc.) Microprose's website seems gone now (dunno if its
been relocated by the company that bought 'em... Infogrames?) If you're
looking for anything that might have been on there, just ask.
