RE: [SWCollect] Is this particular version rare?????

2004-04-07 Thread Freddie Bingham
Rare opened? Maybe 2 or 3 a year on eBay though this is only the second
Apple ][ I've seen and I just won the other opened for $52.

Rare sealed, even with the advertising stickers on it? Of course.

Still, I think it would sell for more if it was the IBM version.

I have the IBM version shrink-wrapped and since it is the same package as
the Apple ][ then I probably won't bid on this. I had always assumed the
Apple ][ release was the same packaging as the C64 but this shows it is not.
I suppose there may be Apple or IBM releases in the same packaging as the
C64 and vice versa but I have yet to see them.

Hugh,

Idon't think -any- of the versions of Maniac Mansion are rare.

But eBay is strange this way. Sometimes a game that is fairly common gets separated from the main flow and caught up in a bidding eddy--probably for no other reason than two or three people happen to want it at that particular moment.(Virgin's Ascendancy a few years back would be another example.)

Actually my Maniac Mansion first release one-piece box is for Apple ][
so it was released in the two box types for both platforms.
It has a red sticker like the auction, though didn't compare
if it's exactly the same (but as said my box release is the first one).
Don't know if there's IBM version in the first release box.

Does it have the same font as the box in the auction? I mean is the Maniac
Mansion with meteor trails or is it the straight font like this

What does the copyright year say on the back?

2004-04-07 Thread Jukka Eronen
Does it have the same font as the box in the auction?

No, as said it's the very first straight release without meteor tails.
Copyright is 1987.
Here's the back (haven't scanned the front):
http://koti.mbnet.fi/psychic/pics/gamecollection/big/maniac1_back.jpg

And actually the back of the box mentions copyrights
for Commodore 64 and Apple II; I'm sure your version does too.
So it probably wasn't released for IBM in this box,
at least according to the lack of its mentioning.

Its all relative to what you want and if you value sealed with original
stickers to be worth more. I found the $3600 price of Drash to be about
$2600 above sane.

Always seems someone has unlimited disposable income... right about the
time you see something you'd like to have. For insanity like this, I
wonder how insurance companies would compute the value of such an item.
Purchase price? Average cost? Replacement value (whatever that is)?
When you take into consideration that almost no two copies of vintage
goodies are in the same condition, it makes it all the more exciting.

RE: [SWCollect] Is this particular version rare?????

2004-04-07 Thread Tomas Buteler
I usually find myself paying above average when I
absolutely must have the title in a particular moment.
I don't know about you guys, but some games come and
go in my memory, and when it comes, well, I get quite
frustrated not to have it. And like everything in this
life, you have to pay extra if you can't afford to
wait.

I don't consider it insanity, I just think it's added
value over the commercial/collector value. I actually
think he's paying a bit extra to KEEP his sanity -
isn't it just torture to think you'll never see that
game, in that condition, ever again for sale? I'll
gladly pay twice as much just to avoid that feeling :)

I may not know much about the collector's value of all
games, but even if I did someday, I'd still find
myself paying above average for some games. Call me
insane if you will, but I'd rather not be sane then :)

Which reminds me, welcome Peter Olafson!

Best regards,

Tomas Buteler
