They scaled their new product porfolio mainly to keep the gross margin
as it is. I'm not sure whether this is benefical to the BBCS partners.

Then again I'd rather keep 2mbit for 75CHF if they'd offer me symmetric
upstream instead ;)

Yeah well, let's see about the upstream. I doubt this will raise
in the near future. Outbound traffic is expensive plus DOCSIS
Upstream takes place in the lower TV Band (VHF). Space is rather
limited there and most headend stations (uBR) only have one or
two connectors for upstream traffic (meaning upstream coming from
the modem, even though it's labelled differently =:-) So
basically all or even a big part of the customers modem share the
same upstream channel. This is gonna get very tight, even if you
use advanced modulations like QAM-256 (We normally use QAM-16 or
even PSK at very small ISPs).

Cablecom probably will offer greater bandwidths once they have
switched to digital TV becaus of digital TV is capable of
offering a multitude of TV programs over a single channel. And
with DOCSIS 3.0 one can bundle channels for even more bandwidth.
Needs new infrastructure (modems and uBRs) though.

I think CC has a big trafffic Problem. They must switch off many of the analog
Channels, when they want have more Traffic. They use some bandwidths for the
digital TV, and for HDTV they use for every Channel the Space of 2 analog
Channels... ok... With the compression od 1,5 channels...
I think this will be a bigger Problem...

Exactly. That's why they are urged to push digital TV. Personally
I'd love TV without snow (except winter sports or documentations
but let's stay on topic) but I will not pay more than for analog
TV, that's for sure. I have a Sat receiver and antenna at home,
picture quality is way better there of course.

HDTV, I don't see the improvement of having higher resolution
when it's compressed down for no good.

It's the same like with DAB. It's of no use being able to receive
DRS2 digitally, when it's compressed to 112 kbit/s. I would not
even go below 160 kbit/s even for pop music.

By the way: What ever happend to TV over ADSL? =:-)

hi Venty,

The normal Channel are not verry good on ADSL and CC TV... They have for 1
Channel only 1,5 Mbit... On Sat you have 3.5 till 4.5 Mbit...

Ok CC has on the Cinemas 1 Mbit more... But... i don't know... When you see a
footballgame... You have sometimes Pixel on the Screen. For fast movements on
the Screen is 1.5 Mbit to less. I say allways more then 3.5 Mbit is ok... 4.5
is good...

Greetings Xaver

You mean DVB-S. Well I don't know how Bluewin tries to market
ther ADSL TV but obviously it's not yet ready to be a replacement
for an existing TV set

Picture quality heavily depends on the bandwidth, the used codec
and what will is shown in the picture (or movie). The two worst
things that can happen are fast movements or hard borders (like
in cartoons or animes). Try encoding a testing table and see how
good the alternating black and white stripes will come out.

Ehm, it gets a little bit off topic by now. How about discussing
this at the next Beer Event? (Even though I'm not allowed to
drink beer because I have to eat medicine (blood dilution) to
cure my hyperthyreosis)
