Re: [swinog] Virtual numbers for receiving SMS and voice?

I finally got access to the beta program at Twilio, but they only
offer numbers which can receive SMS (079) or voice (landline), but not
both at the same time. In other countries, I found such numbers only
in UK and US.

Nexmo.com offers Swiss numbers with the same limitations, but the
SMS-enabled numbers have Sunrise prefixes (076).

Probably someone with telephony insight can explain why the virtual
Swiss mobile numbers can only receive SMS and not voice?

Italy is not on the list at Twilio yet.

Hi Stanislav

you're right, I haven't tried receiving an SMS with Asterisk yet, but do
you see any reason why I shouldn't be able to receive SMS on my fixnet
line (when it's been correctly set up in Asterisk) ? For the last 2-3
years, I have been getting the occasional message read out to me by
Swisscom.

well, last time I tried, it was only possible to send an SMS from a
Swisscom mobile to a Swisscom fixline. SIP providers were out of
scope, and non-Swisscom GSM providers were too. Probably it's slightly
changed, but I don't see any SMS offering from any SIP provider in
Switzerland.

A Fritz!Box, connected to a UPC/Cablecom line, that is connected in turn
to FreeSWITCH works too ;)

That combo (can swap out UPC with Swisscom) gives you both voice and SMS
inbound+outbound, no tricks.

A lot of people would find it weird to see a SMS from a hardline number
though.

We send SMS'es every day the other way, i.e. from fixline to mobile.
This is via ISDN though.

Sorry, I missed out that this was with SIP.

I've just reviewed our Asterisk config, and we do have a config for
receiving SMS'es, but it's been inactive for a couple of years. I also
don't see any way of distinguishing between a voice call and an SMS,
but I'll have to look closer.

Incoming callerid == SMSC.

Have just confirmed that, yes. I tried from two other mobile providers,
they didn't work, but with Swisscom it worked.

Per, I propose that first you actually try it before telling. For some
mysterious reason, the VoIP providers don't know anything about this
:)

Jeroen, I strongly disagree. Most SIP providers do not support SMS at all.

netvoip.ch does not offer any SMS support.

Anveo.com offers SMS support in only a few countries:

Quite likely as they do voice primarily as that is where the money is.
Also, folks who have SIP have Internet and typically do not care about
SMS anymore as well, they have IP.

But there might be some out there that do.

netvoip.ch does not offer any SMS support.

Could be, I do not use it for that.
