Re: [Swlfest] RadioShack to Launch First Wave of Store-Closing Sales
On Monday, I visited some of the Baltimore area stores which are closing. One clerk was ringing up Final sales and apologizing for being on the phone at the same time with a prospective employer. In the past year, the three stores where I regularly shop seemed to have younger employees probably under 30 years of age and a lot of turnover. I'm sure we all did our best to keep Radio Shack in business over the years. The WSJ map is a little easier to read. I learned that the store in my hometown is slated for closure (Haverhill MA).Nearby ones in Plaistow NH, Lawrence MA, and one of the two in Salem NH will be spared. Salem NH has two malls adjacent to each other, and both have RS stores. If one of these stores is near you, it might pay to check it out. I agree that some stock is likely to be sold off wholesale to liquidators, but there'll still be some pretty deep retail discounts in stores slated for closing. Another thing that is common in retail chain store closings, and I honestly don't know if this will be the case with Radio Shack - is that merchandise is actually brought INTO stores - if a store is going out of business, but has a high enough foot traffic factor, things might be brought into that store to take advantage of the situation. Although it was looking rather empty despite nothing being on sale, the staff there were of the firm opinion that they weren't going anywhere. I've seen this before. During the last 2 RS down sizings product was moved either to other stores or to wholesalers for a better price than they think it will fetch in the store - and then the store closes. I wouldn't be holding my breath I went to the sale near me in the Short Hills Mall. They had nothing but cellphones and satellite TV. Al of their hobby Maker stuff was gone but they labels on the pegs it was on did not show sale prices. However, if you were in need of a cordless phone or a microphone cable you were in luck.
