[Synfig-devl] Luma Key Layer

Re: [Synfig-devl] synfig studio / build option / disable_image
yes, make is smart for this kind of job, but if you run the build script, it will cleanup and re-make (build) everything including icon images. In most cases, when I changed some code and would like to compile and get the idea what is the result I did, I just go into the according folder and run make make install ~ yu 2015-07-03 15:58 GMT+08:00 Konstantin Dmitriev ksee.zelga...@gmail.com: Hello! 2015-07-03 1:00 GMT+06:00 d.j@free.fr: hello, Since a few commit, the build system re-create image and icons on the fly each building time. Yesterday night I got a fedora20(gtk3.10.x) and built main branch, found almost the same issue, now here I learned: 1, OSX 10.9.x and Gtk3.14.x 2, virtual machine (vm fusion ) on OSX 10.9 Fedora 21, Gtk3.14.x 3, virtual machine (vm fusion ) on OSX 10.9 Fedora 20 and Gtk3.10.x All the above environments have same issue. Re: [Synfig-devl] widgets on toolbars (actions)
It might have a much flexibile compare to hard coding ui in C++, with xml, the menus and toobars can be defined in extra xml file (we don't currently split xml content from .cpp files). And there is an other benefit from my point of view, each synfig studio panel has a toolbar by default, which are using xml to define toolitems, that means, if we use same for canvas window, the code can share a lot between panels. One important point regarding adopting Inkscape ege-adjustment widget. Synfig Studio's multiple document interface is so powerful right now, when user handles two canvases side by side, there is not enough horizontal space to show all tools, specially for onion skin or display quality like widgets, with ege-ajustment, all these can be well handled. You can play with Inkscape in a small window size and see how well it is. Any way, I will try myself to implement a prototype to demo this advantage. ~ yu 2014-06-25 17:46 GMT+08:00 Konstantin Dmitriev ksee.zelga...@gmail.com: 2014-06-25 16:25 GMT+07:00 Yu Chen jco...@gmail.com: 2014-06-11 1:00 GMT+08:00 Konstantin Dmitriev ksee.zelga...@gmail.com: AFAIK, gtk 2 (and 3) have a special widget to pack the toolbar buttons - https://developer.gnome.org/gtkmm/stable/classGtk_1_1Toolbar.html So it should be used instead of regular HBox widget. Maybe I was wrong. The toolitems for toolbar can not adopt xml to structure UI layout(tool buttons layout), hence we can not apply actions to canvas window toolbar as other panels do (toolbar of layer panel for example). If we implement the canvas window toolbar by using C++ code instead of gtk actions(xml), It will lose flexibility and consistence. http://fossies.org/dox/inkscape-0.48.5/ege-adjustment-action_8h.html just my thoughts Sorry, I have a lack of knowledge here. [Synfig-devl] Usability of Jackdial
Hello, Last week, I was taking my spare time on improving jack button by replacing it with toggle button[1]. After that, I've been playing with it and thinking further: 1) the usage of colors(red and blue) of icon seems inconsistent with the one of animate mode button. Regarding the colors usage, there were some discussions before in our forum.[2] 2) the offset widget is hidden by default, and shows when user enable jack by toggling Jack Button (now it is toggle button). one canvas window, offset widget will short the timeline widget, it is not good but still not bad from usability's perspective. But when it behaves quite negatively on Preview Window, when user trying to enable Jack, the offset widget will shift the Jack button suddenly: you click it, and it moves out of your pointer. If we show offset widget by default, it eats too much space of canvas window toolbar. On preview window, it is not a big deal, so how about just showing offset widget by default on preview window, and keeping it hidden by default on canvas window toolbar. I personally don't like this solution, it makes same control has different UX. So there is one proposal comes in my mind, it would be (I hope) much simple and clear if we use adjustment widget and a drop-down instead of a dial widget (a toggle button combining with offset widget). You can refer to Zoom Level widget in Preview Window [3]. When the value of adjustment is set to (Mute), the Jack is disable, otherwise, it will be enabled and be offset to corresponding value. Disabled : [Mute | v ] Enabled : [ 0.00 | v ] Offset : [1.00 | v ] --- [1] https://github.com/blackwarthog/synfig/commit/427c53e85bef4882a8ba7cf2ce8a50ac69584f89 [2] http://www.synfig.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15t=2866#p11442 [3] http://synfig.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=15t=3031start=15#p14067 Cheers! ~ yu -- Open source business process management suite built on Java and Eclipse Turn processes into business applications with Bonita BPM Community Edition Quickly connect people, data, and systems into organized workflows Winner of BOSSIE, CODIE, OW2 and Gartner awards http://p.sf.net/sfu/Bonitasoft___ Synfig-devl mailing list Synfig-devl@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/synfig-devl

For myself , I am traveling crazily these months, and can't mange to contribute more time, but I would like to fill the gaps of icons as planned long before. And one other task if I have more free time, I will complete Chinese training courses, all strings and voice recording are done, what I have to do is to synchronize sound and video, update and publish it. [Synfig-devl] The usage of Synfig Studio Documentation Page
Hi 张斌, Thanks for interesting on Synfig Project, we recently noticed that you registered on our documentation website, and post your detailed profile under the user page [1], that contains some personal information (like phone number), it seems a resume of seeking job opportunities. But as you might already know, the wiki pages are used as all Synfig related documentation, not for personal stuff. I am not going to delete the page, but to cleanup all the content of it. Please post new version of your user profile page if you like, this page[2] is a reference for you. [Synfig-devl] Drawing advanced outline issue
Hello, There is a strange issue when auto extend option enabled, the advanced outline has incorrect stroke, but the trace is correctly following the mouse pointer movements. It happens in master and only on the OSX 10.9. It can't be reproduced on OSX 10.7.5 Steps to reproduce: 1, select draw tool 2, enable advanced outline layer and auto extend option 3, draw a line freely on canvas and stop 4, draw continually by started from the latest point (vertex) of the advanced outline created in step3 5, now you will see the outline doesn't following the traces of your pointer movement entirely. sounds like an other killer feature you will bring to synfig. Yes, it is better to allow user to specify interpolation in and out for each value entry. But I would propose one alternative: 1) Default interpolation must be defined on file header. If not defined (which is user responsibility) then the default from UI will be used. 2) If not interpolation (in or out) labels are found for a particular value entry, then the default is used. This way, when the interpolation is always the same (in many, many cases) there is not need to write the interpolation for each value entry, which might be tedious for a hand made input file. On the other hand, bool and string values doesn't allow interpolation so individual interpolation in/out for a string value or a bool value will be ignored. It would result always constant interpolation, whatever interpolation type you use. For example if it finds this entry for a string type: 24 This is a example of string with ease meaning... clamp, clamp, clamp! HALT Would parse as: At frame 24 value for string is This is a example of string with ease meaning... clamp, clamp, clamp! HALT, that is, the whole right part of the line is considered as the string itself and no interpolation token is expected. Respect to the frame format, I think that we should stick to frames only. Most of the outputs of the applications use frames as time basis. If there is need to use time (real value) for the time (and ignore the FPS value) then it can be added later. So the 'f' at the end of your example wouldn't be needed. More suggestions? Cheers! 2014-04-01 0:54 GMT+02:00 Charlie Murphy cmsmur...@gmail.com: Hi Genete, I like the simplicity of that format. One question: would a single interpolation be used for all Value Nodes or could you change them separately? Re: [Synfig-devl] Opacity vs Amount (of layer)
Hi All, Thanks for clarifying and sharing your thoughts about this. I should take more time before sending out the first mail. I hope it is not too late: I didn't intend to JUST remove any UI elements. When I show synfig to my students (adobe photoshop/illustrator advanced users), the are a lot of feedback/concerns regarding UI, the toolbox is one of them: a) File buttons in toolbox is really weird. b) The defaults widgets layout is mess and is hard to understand at the first sight, Opacity particularly. The most of my students complain that it seems like a slider to change the Option above it (Layer Blender Method), and some of them guessing it can adjust the Gradient setting bellow. When I explain them, those two widgets are used to change Opacity and Blender Method, then almost all of them complain why layer blend method and opacity options are exposed on toolbox. In their world, when s/he would like to draw an element with other opacity value than 1, s/he use a color with alpha in a non-zero value. and they also have concerns about other UI things but it is another topic. Based on my experience, I never use Blend Method and Opacity. But yes, I did see some demo from internet showing synfig studio users were using those widgets during creating animation. So I raised this topic and would like to get feedback from you. Thanks you all and now I can get more clear idea. We also should notice that these widgets' width. It will be a big impact to implement a more flexible toolbox. As we can see, Layer Blend Method and Interpolation widgets are quite long(width) and take more than 4 buttons' width. I noticed the current toolbx wastes a lot of screen space due to 5 buttons each row design. My plan is to implement a auto re-sizing toolbox as Gimp does. The outline/fill colors and gradient widgets will be implemented as 2 button size's widget [1]. But for Layer Blend and Opacity widgets, It will become useless if they are also in 2 buttons size. So my conclusion is: Remove them from toolbox, and place them in global toolbar (main window toolbar) or in Tool Option Panel. If they are going to be placed in global toolbar, then they will behave the same as they do in toolbox, if they are going to be placed in Tool Options Panel, then they will be available only while those tools such as geometry tools being selected. Regarding Simplified / Advanced UI options, My idea is to implement a customizable toolbar/toolbox system, User can define which avaliable tools(buttons) be exposed on each toolbox/toolbar( global toolbar, local toolbars, like layer panel toolbar, history panel toolbar etc). And this kind of ability should be a part of workspace system. I mean, Workspace system is not only regarding windows position, size, but also taking care the UI elements on windows. And then user can decide if Opacity and other widgets should be exposed on his/her Synfig Studio. [Synfig-devl] Opacity vs Amount (of layer)
Hi, We have Default Opacity dropdown in Toolbox, which affects new layer's Amount. Do you think it would be better to unify this term? Just using Amount, since we have some layers which relevant parameter can not be called Opacity. And even further, do we really need this Opacity preference exposed on UI? Does it really help for users? Re: [Synfig-devl] main menubar cleanup and improvement
Hi Sorry for late response. 2014-01-28 d.j@free.fr: hello, I advise to: - Remove Keyframe, Layer, Tool, Set menus from menubar Menu organization - * What do you think to move Keyframe, Layer and Set has submenu of Edit ? * I think it's better to keep Tool menu entry (Gimp, Krita, Toon Boom have a Tool menu; Blender3d, Flash, Inkscape don't have) Why, because i think that a menu bar should expose all app's functions Because their( Gimp, Toonboom etc.) tools can not be placed/exposed on toolbar/toolbox totally at the same time. If the menu just duplicates what toolbar/toolbox already has, then it is not necessary. In fact, I've been thinking how we can expose the Convert function of parameter in an easier and more efficient way than the current right-click menu. besides adding a toolbar for Parameters Panel[1][2], maybe we can add a Convert menu to the menubar, when user select a parameter, the available convert type will active, and those invalid convert types will disabled. It will help new comers to know and master this core and powerful functions of Synfig Studio in a quick and Intuitive way. To avoid a bloated menu bar, it is necessary to take care of adding menus on it. And this is another thought that I proposed to remove tool and keyframe from menubar. Sometimes less is more. Re: [Synfig-devl] main menubar cleanup and improvement
Thanks both for the comments! Basically, the first step of menu re-arrangement is done by leaving some rooms to be improved. The new menu layout File, Edit, View, Canvas, Layer, Plug-Ins, Window, Help Some thing I would like to share: 1) Compare to the proposal in first mail, Layer menu is added. So use can still add a layer which can not be created by tools available in Toolbox, blur layer for example. Maybe we should redesign layer panel ui by adding a [new layer] button in the future. 2) Window - Workspace has three modes at the moment, [Default], [Animating] and [Compositing]. [Default] is just a renamed [Reset Panels to Original Layout]. The others are experienced implementations. But you might already have ideas about workspace management functionalities such as workspace save, rename, delete. 3) Window menu should have a separator between panels and opened documents 4) Window menu can not handle a file which name contains underscore. I saw there is code existed which fixes same issue in File - Open Recent. 5) Arrangement of opened (multiple) documents, please refer to Photoshop's workspace arrange menus. These will be help when user working on a scene with external canvas/es. 6) Would be good to have a [close all documents] in File menu when there is more than one documents opened. 7) View menu should be polished. 3,4,6,7) is my next milestone! Since I am going to have my Chinese New Year holiday in the coming week with limited internet access, I am about to send out merge pull for the changes already done. That all for now. I believe this problem is solved by OS and desktop environment (it's called Assistive technology if I remember correctly). ^__^ what if the toolbox is hidden (not accessible)? I believe if toolbox is hidden, then it's done intentionaly and user most likely will usek key bindings to switch tools, not awkward menu items. ^__^ So, I'm strongly encourage Yu to make the changes and submit a pull request. ^__^ K. 2014-01-26 Yu Chen jco...@gmail.com Hi, In menubar of mainwindow, there are 10 items: File, Edit, View, Canvas, Layer, Keyframe, Tool, Set, Plug-Ins and Help. Do we really need Layer, Tool, Set, Keyframe menus? Since all of their sub-items are avaliable in their own panels. Keyframe menu, in most cases, user has go to keyframe panel to maintain keyframes for their documents. Layer menu, is just a copy of layer panel context menu Tool menu, is just a copy of toolbox Set, I never use it from menu bar Canvas, almost same, but the Canvas Properties and Options should be relocated from Edit and File menus to Canvas menu. I advise to: - Remove Keyframe, Layer, Tool, Set menus from menubar - Add a new Window item which contains File-Panels items (with some improvements of couse) - Relocate menu items Edit-Properties and File-Options to Canvas menu. Maby be we should hide the Options menu item, since the Options dialog is not a finished effort, and from my point of view, it is more like a canvas metadata editor. It would better to merge it into canvas properties dialog. So the new menubar will look like: File, Edit, View, Canvas, Plug-Ins, Window, Help Sub-items: [File] == New Open... Realistically, to properly choose a development priority it's need to balance between need and effort. As I've mentioned several times, current bones implementation is not the really good implementation. As Konstantin sated at the LGM development priorities meeting, a bone feature has to be implemented via layer, that is, context based. Current bone code is valuenode based so it has to be rewritten completed to turn it into a context based. Maths are there in the current code, so the big deal is not the maths but the integration with the render system. On the other hand, sound layer implemented via no jack mode is not realistic until the on canvas playing with live feedback is a reality. Since some wanted features are dependent on others, I think that those others must be implemented 2013/10/26 Yu Chen jco...@gmail.com: Hi Konstantin and Carlos, I'm going to claim 300$ for the campaign of next month, and personally, I prefer one of two: sound layer and bone layer. But since you would better knowing which one is more reality in one month of development, could you please comment here? Or you have other options instead of the above. My attending of this campaign is not because I need those two features for my life or job, the only reasons are I am enjoying my stay here with you and the other people from community, and hope to help Synfig development as much as I can. Enjoy synfiging ^_^ Hi, Yu! This is a great news for us! Thank you! About the priorities. I think the bones priority is more real sound layer. From one hand, the bones feature is already have some code. From the other hand, the sound problem is related to solving real-time visualization problem, which is hard to estimate. (BTW, Carlos recently made some really neat implementation of new rendering type trying to achieve the real-time feedback. But shame on me, I haven't managed to test it yet!) Also, the sound problem can be partially resolved by the implementing JACK integration, which (I believe) can be done in much cheaper than $300. ^__^ Finally, about other options. From my point of view, the frame-by-frame animation support would be a total favorite for many animators.
