On the BBC Radio Five broadcast from Paris tonight,
commentator Sebastian Coe reported, apparently
seriously, that Edwin Moses is contemplating a
comeback in the 400 Hurdles in anticipation of next
year's Olympics. Coe said he had just met with Moses,
and that Edwin is in remarkably good shape.
Right -- the media referred to that day in 1960 as
Black Tuesday -- not only did Norton, the favorite,
finish last in the 100, but high jump favorite John
Thomas finished third in that event behind two
athletes from the USSR, Shavlikadze and Brumel. And,
in those cold war days, finishing behind
Maurice Greene doesn't qualify for the 100 final.
Montgomery and Williams finish 5th and 6th in the
final. Lunn finishes 10th out of 12 in his 1500 heat
and doesn't qualify for the final. Bell finishes 6th
in the triple jump final. Nieto takes 7th in the high
jump final. And, of course, the
