I need to know the actual wording of the rule concerning past US champions
participation at US nationals. If anyone can email it to me, or point me in
the proper direction I would appreciate it.
I believe the rule applies to National, World, and Olympic champions. If
these are separate rules
Speaking of Byron Dyce, didn't he break 4:00 in the Dream Mile in Philly
in 1971? That would make him the first black American under, two years
ahead of Reggie McAffee?
What say ye, track statisticians? Prove your mettle.

Alan Webb continued his storybook season by running a 1:47.3 anchor to
lead
his South Lakes teammates to victory over Florida's Atlantic H.S.,
7:35.33-7:37.31. SL's time of 7:35.33 is the fastest by an Eastern team

If these are separate rules please let me know, and send me all applicable
rules. And I really do need the specific wording of it.
It's USATF Rule 10.3(b) and the text of that rule (and all of the USATF
Rules of Competition) can be found on

South Lakes' unofficial splits: Jonathan Kebede, 1:58+; Kanda Karmo,

Randall, 1:56.0; Sean Jefferson, 1:54.0;
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Dyce
had US citizenship when he broke 4 minutes. I believe he was
Jamaican. Mr. Dyce, I noticed your name on a post to the list. Am I
correct?

That is indeed the son of the former Villanova 1/2-miler. Ken, Sr., is also

I'm sure Byron will personally respond, since it would appear
that he is now a list lurker,
but he competed for Jamaica, as can be seen on this list

I think he is still the Jamaican record holder at 880y

What you did not say, except by subtle implication, is that SL's time is a
national high school record for 4x800m, which is absolutely true. It mey
be an inferior record to the 4x880y record, but it's a record nonetheless.

Oh, I get it now. Dyce really is the first black American to break
four minutes. And he did it not very far from where Christopher Columbus
landed in 1492.

We haven't yet determined whether Byron broke 4:00
in the Franklin Field 'Dream Mile' in '71.
I DID find an early entry field announcement for that race
that included all THREE of our contenders- Byron Dyce,
Brevard JC's Reggie McAfee and freshman-at-the-time Dennis

Of course, the good Salem folks also had the advantage of the time-proven
witch detection process. They would bind the suspect young
maiden and toss her in a deep pool of water. Since it was well-known
that witches are especially buoyant, if the girl popped to the surface
they would
I don't claim to know as much as you do Kurt, but I do know that historic
accounts relate that no one was ever burned or drowned in Salem for being a

Byron Dyce,
I have been looking at the USATF qualifiers list at
http://www.usatf.org/events/2001/USAOutdoorChampionships/entryStatus.asp and
the following questions and comments come to mind. First of all the lists
seems to be firming up with only three total entries listed as open and three

The answer to your question obviously depends on whether you ask Track and
