I suggest keeping it simple, ie tag it as book:genre

This tag could also be used for bookshops or libraries that specialise in a
 particular genre.

I like this idea a lot, thanks.

I’ll try it on a few nodes in February when we will start mapping the public
bookcases and I plan to make a proposal based on the results.

book:genre it is!

Actually voting is ending in 5 days, so I will wait the end of the vote before
converting the page to a formal tag.

Currently in OSM, we have 10 amenity=public_bookcase:
 http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/amenity=public_bookcase

Seeing the numbers and the rarety of such feature, I think you can add
your suggestion directly in your local editions and perhaps also in a
new section in the wiki (noticing it's coming after the vote)

We have about 50 or so public bookcases that we will be adding in Montreal in
the upcoming months. I’ll be able to try out this idea and then make a new
proposal on the matter.

Thanks for your answer!

Re: [Tagging] lanes=-1 especially in Canada

2014-12-30 Thread Guillaume Pratte
There are many of these lanes=-1 in the Canvec import in Quebec. I would assume
they mean ‘Unknown’.

In my opinion we could just delete them all (at least in Quebec) since they
bring no pertinent information.

I see 17,943 uses of this value: it's less popular than 5 lanes but more
 popular than 6.
What does it mean, if anything?

It may well mean what it says, a one-lane road. Some rural areas in the USA
still have one-lane roads, with occasional wider spots where one vehicle can
pause to allow a vehicle going the other direction to pass by. Given how
sparsely-populated some of the northern regions of Canada are, I would not be
surprised to find some one-lane roads, and some extensive areas with no roads
 at all.

[Tagging] 'Variety' in UK English?

2014-12-29 Thread Guillaume Pratte
Hello,

We are having a discussion on the wiki about the ‘varieté’ value for the
theatre:genre tag values:

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Tag:amenity%3Dtheatre#variet.C3.A9
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Tag:amenity=theatre#variet.C3.A9

‘varieté’ does not seems English (shouldn’t it be ‘variety’?), and it’s not
French either (it should be ‘variété’).

I suppose in the US they would write ‘variety’. How is it spelled in the UK?

What is the value we should use for OpenStreetMap?

Langenscheidt translates DE:varieté into variety theatre, music hall, Am.
 vaudeville theatre.
Oxford defines 'variety' for both BE/AE as a form of television or theater
 entertainment
consisting of a series of different types of acts, such as singing, dancing,
 and comedy

All is exactly what was intended with the German varieté in the Wiki.
(Apparently in language, DE:varieté has been borrowed from FR:variétés,
 losing some
fine details when passing the border)

Thus I'd tune into the suggestion (here and on the talk page) to change it
to theatre:genre=variety in the wiki, talk to those who have tagged the 9
 occurrences and
 inform the original proposer.

The same: variety. My impression is that, in French, it is normally
plural (e.g. théâtre de variétés), so if we wanted a French tag-value it
 would be variétés

OK, the term varieté (and other genres) was introduced in the Wiki in
February 2010 by a German user called BlackBike. It seems there is a
German word Varieté, also spelt Varietee, translated by leo.org as 'music
hall' or 'vaudeville'. I'm not familiar
with the subtleties of these different terms, but it's not impossible that
there is a genre specific to the German-speaking world, subtly different
from variety, vaudeville, music-hall, or French variétés, which therefore
needs a tag-value of its own:
 theatre:genre=varieté.
The German Varieté translates to Music Hall (BE) or Vaudeville (AE).
Excuse me, I've read your message too fast and didn't realize you already
 said what I've written.

[Tagging] Defining genre for public bookcases

2014-12-27 Thread Guillaume Pratte
Hello,

Many public bookcases are small enough (20-30 books) that hey can have an
implicit genre, for example most books are science-fiction novels, cookbooks,
etc.

If you are looking for a particular genre, this information can be particularly
helpful on a public bookcase map (so you know which public bookcase to visit).

There does not seem to have a generic genre tag in OSM. Should it be mapped
like proposed in amenity=theathre?

  theatre:genre=drama
  theatre:genre=opera
  ...

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dtheatre
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity=theatre

This could give:

  literature:genre=science-fiction
  literature:genre=mystery
  literature:genre=cookbook
  literature:genre=comedy
  …

What do you think?

[Tagging] alley=green_alley

2013-08-18 Thread Guillaume Pratte
Hello,

I am writing about a new proposed tag, alley=green_alley, and would like to
have comments on the new tag.

A green alley is a service alley that a group of local residents embellish with
vegetation, such as trees, vines and flowers.

Montreal has more than a hundred green alleys that are officially recognized by
the city. These green alleys are notable feature since they are clearly
identified with a sign installed by the city:

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/File:WTMTL_T52_DSF2289.JPG

A green alley is first and foremost a normal service alley, and would be
identified as such when tagging:

highway=service
service=alley
alley=green_alley

I have created a proposal on the wiki:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/green_alley

Here is the talk page:

Thanks!
