Re: [Tagging] Fwd: tag for planetarium

2014-02-27 Thread Bryce Nesbitt
The typical planetarium in the USA is attached to a museum,
and most offer separately ticketed shows (stars, movies, talks).

A lens-based star projectors once distinguished a planetarium.
No more.
Now these are basically digital movie theaters with a curved screen.
As such they are most akin to a movie theater in my view.

Finally I vote also for amenity=planetarium.
I'm going to create/modify the wiki pages in that way.

For me a planetarium is more an educational site than a touristic
attraction.
And yes there are many very old stars shown there but that's an argument
for a museum.
What I could also imagine is man_made=planetarium as it is related to
man_made=telescope where you can also (live) look into the past...

There may be at least two kinds of planetariums.
Those operated by astrophysicists and/or space enthusiasts to spread
scientific knowledge.
Those operated by lighting engineers and possibly exhibiting acrobats.
The bottom line seems to me: if that's the case, should the OSM user
know which he finds?
Is it really necessary to confuse them or would the two kinds,
educational and leisure, make sense?
Or, finally, would the non educational aspect only be in the eyes of the
beholder?

Cheers,

André.

the Hayden Planetarium in NYC is perhaps an exception, but it

Like museum, it is something between science/museum/educational and

public is from schools and locals, not tourists (it's not a big one).

+1. The following is what I wrote and hesitated to send yesterday
before reading this.

A planetarium is definitely educational.
It's often coupled with photographs, orbiting model satellites,
clocks, and all sorts of space related objects.
It's a good place to bring kids to show them that there is something
else than games and that space is different.
Computers have their place too.  I'll never forget that kid
whispering in my ear "I want that [space] program".
Much akin to a museum indeed.  In this case, a 5yo running all over
the place and yelling "there's another one there" (there was nothing
but huge animal "ones" everywhere).  Ah that élan of the youth!
Unfortunately, Education
  features  is void of that.

Cheers,

  André.

Hi all,

Well amenity=* has been something of a default choice in the past, so
the definition is quite stretched from "community facilities" as the
wiki puts it. There are some well-established tags that might be
better as leisure=* or tourism=* if we were starting from scratch. So
I'd suggest tourism=planetarium might be the best choice; but all of

I think amenity=planetarium is perfectly reasonable. A planetarium is a
place that resembles a theater but the "show" involves models of the
planets and/or the stars & universe. If OSM can have an amenity=brothel

Hello,

i was looking for suitable tag, that describes a planetarium. But
until now nothing, there's no mention in the wiki. But there are
several different usages out there.

After a discussion on talk-de there was a majority for
amentiy=planetarium

We could not agree us, if a planetarium is a theater/cinema or a
museum. So we took amenity as key.

Any protest? If not, i will make theses wiki changes.
