[Tails-dev] Detecting hidden partitions?

I respect this intention but struggle to see how the trust verification
functions when equipped with only a warning; trust is hard to determine,
especially up front, even if you "own" the machine.

>

The same as this:

i.e., trusting the device.

A use case could be:
I see occupied bits on a USB stick I intend to use as a Tails device; I am
concerned.

I would like to recover this space but am unsure if reformatting is effective;
it turns out extended partitions can go untouched during reformatting.

I reformat.

I still see the occupied bits; I am further concerned, specifically that my
device has been pwnd by a powerful adversary.

I wish there was a tool for this.

- - -

There is but should Tails provide the same service; probably not.

However, if there is a potential Tails device integrity check tool, it could
provide a complete service and visualize the partition table in some way; text
is plenty.

No worries (:

[Tails-dev] Hacking Team looking at Tails

2016-02-22 Thread Spencer

Hi,

Austin English:
filed https://labs.riseup.net/code/issues/11137

This is a very challenging problem. There are two cases that come to
mind.

1. The device may become compromised before becoming a Tails device. In
this case, the files/partitions are either hidden or protected and are
not removed during reformatting.

This is best addressed during the creation of a new Tails device.

2. The device may become compromised after becoming a Tails device. In
this case, the files/partitions, which may be hidden or protected, are
not removed after shutdown.

This is best addressed during either the startup or shutdown processes
of a living Tails device.

sajolida:
not about detecting malware but about training
users .. good practices

So, detecting/educating *that* but not *what*. This seems reasonable,
as *what* would need blacklists, trust models, and so on.

Also, given the actual (intended/expected) function of the hidden
attribute files, e.g., preserving user settings, it seems that there are
no benefits of having these, or any other, files on a Tails device.

Don't plug your Tails in an untrusted OS

I do not think this is an achievable model to promote because:

- Trust is like STDIN; can be anything to anyone.

- There seem to be no machines or systems that can have the guarantee
that is referred to when we say 'Trust'.

reinstalling is the only solution .. installing
from the same untrusted OS really won't be.

And educating (:

How can Tails:

- Inform of this device protection feature and what it does?

- Detect the existence of unwanted files.

- Disclose what the files are and where they were located in the file
system?

- Provide a resolution to remove the files and restore the devices
integrity.

- Guarantee the files removed are now gone and will not come back, or
recommend a behavior model that will limit the possibility of files
(re)appearing?

Austin English:
help for the ux portion

I would be more than happy to put the files together or think through
this some more. Feel free to send anything my way; can be as rough or
polished as you got it.

[Tails-dev] Physical Ethernet Adapter

2016-02-16 Thread Spencer

Hi,

 Spencer:
Does Tails natively support external internet adapters?

intrigeri:
Yes, most of them (USB ones).

Is this limited to either ethernet or wifi?

Some more questions:

How is Tails planning on addressing the lack of built-in ethernet ports,
now and in the near future?

I ask because I am working on the internet experience, as it relates to
the startup flow.

Given the ever increasing lack of ethernet ports on devices, and the
increasing use of Tails as a security distribution, it seems valuable to
investigate support for ethernet adapters and external wireless cards,
PCI, USB, Thunderbolt, and so on.

What do you think?

[Tails-dev] About the download and verification of test images

Hi,

I follow this loosely, so forgive redundancies.

Though I may find by looking, will you point to what this (newer
version) currently looks like, or where I can find parts and assemble?

It is a nice weight during quickscroll :)

Tails contains a mechanism that, at boot time, executes a check for

[Tails-dev] Support of "go get" command

Hi,

I wish there were a simple resolution to this, since hunting down

require a clever bot.

[Tails-dev] Icedove security updates / Tails release schedule

2016-01-04 Thread Spencer

Hi,

u:
TL;DR: Thunderbird is not always released at the same time as FF,

This implies that we have to choose between
a) delay Tails releases to get the new Icedove; or
b) [Risk security by] sticking to the current Firefox release schedule
every 6 weeks.

With all due respect to Mozilla devs and all those here involved in
making the decision to migrate to Icedove, this seems like quite the
effort for un(der)usable and bloated software, especially given the
severity of the options above.

None of these are desired experiences :(

[Tails-dev] OFTC Blocks Tor [was: Tails contributors meeting: Sunday January 03]

2016-01-02 Thread Spencer

Hi,

sajolida:
irc.oftc.net is blocking Tor lately.

For the record:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Spencer:
ERROR: Anonymous TOR usage is unavailable

OFTC:
Hello, I have a feeling that this might need to be directed to
another

IRC network; I think our message reads along the lines of "no more
connections are accepted from this IP" or something a lot less useful
than that error message.

OFTC does occasionally need to turn off new Tor connections due to
abuse,
we're hoping to have a solution in place eventually that reduces how
often

we need to disable Tor network-wide.

In the meantime, you'll just have to keep retrying periodically to
see if

new connections are allowed or not.

Spencer:
See attached. [scrubbed]

OFTC:
I was wrong about this; this error message does in fact come from OFTC
when trying to use our web irc service over Tor; I hadn't realized that
it

has a different error message from more conventional IRC clients.

it seems as if OFTC has attached something ... maybe to a file that
isn't replaced during updates

We do turn Tor off occasionally when it's under abuse but the specific
web

irc interface does have that error message. We're currently testing an
interface to allow authenticated Tor users to connect even when we
disallow new Tor connections in general.

Feel free to create channels as you wish, keeping in mind that we're
not

interested in hosting illegal activities, software-related or not.

What is a "new" connection defined as? ]

Our Tor blocking is enforced entirely at connect time; existing
connections aren't disconnected when we block Tor, though the mechanism
to remove abusers sometimes results in disconnecting unrelated Tor
users.

There must be something I can look for in some captures to help
resolve this.

Probably the best way forward is to run a local irc client such as
weechat, quassel, irssi, etc. I don't know if the web gateway will be
open

for anonymous Tor users or not.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I never inquired as to what an "authenticated Tor user" is.

Hi,

Michael English:
Tails should have a page on the website dedicated to recommended
computer hardware.

intrigeri:
I'd be glad to see a team commit to set up _and maintain_ such

USB Sticks would be a reasonable start.

Also, major computer manufacturers are known
to have BIOS level backdoors which renders Tails security useless.
Smaller computer manufacturers on the above list would be less likely
to

violate users' security and privacy on a hardware level.

there are such "backdoors" in Intel ME (present in any
recent Intel CPU, cannot be disabled in practice), and most computer
manufacturers use firmware (BIOS) provided by very few vendors

Maybe a DIY BIOS how-to would be a more reasonable start, though quite
out of scope of the documentation, maybe. Similar things have been
touched on [0].

Hi,

intrigeri:
I'd rather disable it but I can live with it. See earlier discussion
on this topic: https://labs.riseup.net/code/issues/10403#note-3

If this is the screen with the clock that slides away, then it could go
since it isn't clear how it functions without a touchscreen :(

If this same screen is considered a screensaver and can be customized,
then people will not associate it with any level of security, making its
somewhat usable functionality okay :)

However, having a default passphrase is difficult to guess at, though it
seems all are against having that.

[Tails-dev] [Tails - Feature #5991] Include BitTorrent software

2015-11-12 Thread Spencer

Hi,

str4d:
If I2P is enabled

The Design section at https://tails.boum.org/contribute/design/I2P/
points out some I2P issues. A new question is, are these concerns
relevant to the Tor Network as well?

If so, then maybe there can be a "Torrent over I2P :)" consensus based
on the Tor Project's preference to not support torrenting.

adding the i2p flag to the boot parameters

The Tails documentation on this is not clear to me.

Also, the links https://tails.boum.org/geti2p.net and
http://127.0.0.1:7657/i2psnark do not load :(

[native application] only usable with I2P

Easy, and I think maybe a good way to go. Something less usefully
bloated than Vuze might be more suitable...the I2P documentation has
some good alternatives.

Perhaps something to this effect could be added to the documentation?

sajolida, what do you think?

Side note: I2P supports UDP traffic, but only really for apps that are
built with I2P support (either native Java, or via the SAM API). Both
I2PSnark and Vuze have DHT support, and IIRC there is a proposal for
implementing uTP. We do also have a SOCKS tunnel that we haven't
finished adding UDP support to, because of a lack of dev
time/funds/incentive...

I2P torrent clients (and apps in general) use a single Destination, so
usually only have two or three tunnels built at any one time. This can
be manually increased up to a maximum of 16, although six is usually
sufficient to see a decent speed increase.

Good to know :)

Tails defaults to hidden mode; then again, the number of people using
Tails

for I2P torrenting would probably be low, compared to the number of
Vuze nodes (which currently are estimated to make up about 30-40% of
the I2P network).

If people see Tails and I2P as a gateway to torrenting their long-lost
Where's Wally VHS, that could change.

[Tails-dev] [Tails - Feature #5991] Include BitTorrent software

2015-11-04 Thread Spencer

Hi,

Tails should either include BitTorrent software, explain how to safely
use user installed BitTorrent software, or document the technical
limitations behind not doing so.

The purpose of this thread is to discuss and conclude the matter of
including/supporting BitTorrent in some way in Tails.

This [0] is what we currently say.
This [1] is the existing ticket.

Research Thus Far (If there is more please include)
---

Tor Project Blog Post:
https://blog.torproject.org/blog/bittorrent-over-tor-isnt-good-idea

Feedback from a user:
I tried apt-get install ctorrent followed by torify
ctorrent torrentfile.torrent while monitoring all communication
with Wireshark. While ctorrent always generate new unique peer and key
IDs each time the torrent is started, always report the same port, and
always report IP=0.0.0.0, do not attempt to discover external ip, and
no proxy bypasses happens, I concluded it may be safe to use.

Besides that UDP does not work at all over Tor (DHT, uTP, UDP trackers
etc...), which of course reduce the usefulness of a BitTorrent client
in Tails, there is one real major problem I can see:

Each connection to a peer is going through its own Tor circuit. This
means Tor ends up building about 100 circuits, using about half of
them at any time. It also means it easily reach download speeds of 3
megabyte/second. One basically never get over 150 kilobytes/second
through one single circuit (e.g. http downloads), so this DOES put a
lot of load on the Tor network. Proposed solution would be to get all
connections for the same torrent through the same circuit.

What To Do
---

- Talk about the protocol (What are the issues with UDP [2], TCP,
extensions, and so on?)

- Talk about the circuits/load (Can connections be funneled through less
circuits and/or be less of a burden?)

- Talk about pre/post packaging (Will we include BitTorrent software in
Tails?)

If this sounds good, let's do it :)

[Tails-dev] Releasing automated tests

2015-10-28 Thread Spencer

Hi,

anonym:
Neat! That's is a very useful Git feature. Thanks for letting me know
about it!

Then I think we can combine the "..." operator with another fancy Git
feature I recently found, namely Git pathspec "magic signatures". So we
could do:

   BASE_BRANCH_DIFF="$(git diff $base_branch...$commit  -- \
   '*' \
   ':!/wiki' \
   ':!/ikiwiki.setup' \
   ':!/ikiwiki-cgi.setup')"
   if [ -z "${BASE_BRANCH_DIFF}" ]; then
   CUCUMBER_ARGS="${CUCUMBER_ARGS} --tag @doc"
   fi

where $commit is the commit we test, before merging the base branch
locally. Interesting!

I don't understand this at all!

Don't mind me :)

Spencer

[Tails-dev] Help needed with screenshots of Mac boot menu with Tails

2015-10-24 Thread Spencer

Hi,

sajolida:
I see that you changed the background from gray to
black. Was this on purpose?

Within the current Mac Boot ROM version (2015-001) [0], there are two
background colors:

- Gray = Old (Pre Mavericks/Yosemite)
- Black = New (Post Mavericks/Yosemite)

I am unable to confirm anything more specific :(

It is up to you which you will use but they are both correct.

Old = Tested on:

- Old = MacBookPro9,2
- New = MacBookPro11,3

Spencer

I will keep this in dev since you seem to like reading this kind of
stuff :)

Do you need tests on another Mac?

All should perform the same based on their Boot ROM Version; here[0] is
a list. An OSXpert, or someone with access every Boot ROM Version,
would need to fully confirm the subtle differences in each.

sajolida:
Do you confirm that the DVD appears with a hard disk icon on

I cannot. The disk icon image is what shows :(

Here [1] :)

Does it make any difference if the USB Stick is installed
using the command line?

Nope. Tail 1.6 prompts the same screen and icon set on startup from USB
Sticks that have Tails cloned via both the Tails Installer and Bash.

Direct USB Stick install might differ, but maybe not since I think the
startup icons are driven by the firmware on whatever device is in
question.

Well, now I'm wondering ...

No worries. Although Cheetah, Panther, Leopard, and Lion introduce
major graphic updates, it seems that there are only two major startup
screens Mac users will be presented with today:

- One for Yosemite & El Capitan.
- One for Lion to Mavericks.

The differences here are icons and background colors; minor enough that
it isn't confusing (unless they have the bug that shows a ghost volume,
but an update would resolve that).

We could do a user driven image swap on the Mac instructions for higher
accuracy.

[Tails-dev] Help needed with screenshots of Mac boot menu with Tails

2015-10-21 Thread Spencer

Hi,

sajolida:
I want something like this but wonder what the label is with Tails:

http://cdn.osxdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/boot-from-os-x-yosemite-installer.jpg

Using a library computer I can see that the label is 'Windows', and
unlike Kali and the likes, there is no extra EFI volume :)

That's for the instructions on the website.

Bonus point if you manage to send a direct PNG screenshot and not a
photo of the screen but I'm not sure that's possible.

Find those hard drive volume icons and make one yourself (I will if you
provide some sizing info). There are two volumes; one labeled
'Macintosh HD' (if not customized), and one labeled 'Windows'.

[Tails-dev] Help needed with screenshots of Mac boot menu with Tails

2015-10-21 Thread Spencer

Hi,

Spencer:
[Something close to correct]

Actually, here[0] is the DVD startup screen, and here[1] is the USB
Stick startup screen.

These are a hybrid of Yosemite, El Capitan, and whatever came on the
2009 macs in this library (depreciated startup disk and USB icons appear
at boot).

Let me know if you would like these adjusted in any way.

[Tails-dev] Desktop Camouflage

2015-10-21 Thread Spencer

Hi,

Copying dev since they care.

I am checking in on the status of the camouflage feature for Jessie; is
anybody porting it? Last thing I heard was intrigeri about a month ago
after a dev list reminder.

If not, I can update the relevant Greeter work. Let me know.

[Tails-dev] Brainstorming session on the connection process

2015-10-03 Thread Spencer

Hi,

Lunar:
a couple pain points getting connected to the Tor network:

 * hard to notice to click on icon to select Wi-Fi network.

A resolution is needed.

 * It's the first time I'm coming to this café...
 * It's the first time I'm coming to this office...

User profiles are in active(ish) development, so we can address this
there.

 * no clue to start the Unsafe Browser to get through captive portal.

Some instruction is needed.

 * Tor can take while to notice that captive portal connects.

Some feedback is needed.

Tor meeting brainstorm summary.

probably in the greeter

'Network' would fit nicely with 'Language', 'Storage', and 'Privacy', as
it is common to include network configuration in an install/boot/startup
flow. However, in our case, it might also be appropriate to have
network configuration be some heads-up option in the desktop
environment, as many people choose not to use networking, especially at
boot, since they might want to ensure firewalls or monitors are properly
working.

 1. Automatic configuration. (I don't fear to be identified as a Tails
user.)
 2. Manual configuration. (I don't want to attract any attention and
I know how to configure the network and Tor.)
 3. Offline only.

These are cool and could fit nicely in the Guided Configuration dialogs,
should 'Networks' appear in the Greeter. Otherwise, we can figure
something out.

Attached (are) post-its

Yay! The first one has a quote that is the topic of two discussions on
various lists, detectability; though I don't know enough to yet
determine if they can go anywhere.

Spencer, interested in helping to make some wireframes?

Sure. The block of instructions, starting with “Step 1/n”, would first
need to be organized and refined, then some wires built on that and the
flow you have included.

I would like to hear from others as to the scope and feasibility of
this, as it could impact what we have been trying to wrap up for
testing, or not, depending on thoughts.

[Tails-dev] HTTP Mirror

2014-05-15 Thread Spencer Neitzke
Hello all,

I have just finished setting up my new Tails mirror, which you can find
here: 23.239.26.97. It will need to be accessed from dl.amnesia.boum.org
as it is a virtual host. I do have one question, how long should I have the
cron be waiting between rsyncs?

Thanks,
Spencer
