Sure.

Note that if you follow these instructions, as requested, the *download*
happens on Windows, without Tor. But yeah, there's the need for an
extra "intermediary Tails", which is of course burdensome.

Unfortunately, in the current state of our on-disk partition layout
and boot process, and given how the landscape of live USB installers
on Windows looks like, it does not look realistic to drop the need for
that intermediary Tails any time soon. Sorry!

Kristian confirmed privately that this is about this setting,
for which Lenovo has instructions for Windows 8.1, 10, and 11:

I understand you're talking about a Windows setting called Fast
Startup (as opposed to the Fast Boot BIOS option that we document

I can think of innocuous explanations for this behavior. For example,
it could be that Windows does some sort of initialization of this USB
wireless adapter that is necessary for it to work, and that survives
a reboot (possibly because it's never fully powered off).

To investigate this further, we'll need you to send 2 reports with
WhisperBack (https://tails.net/doc/first_steps/whisperback/), that
both reference this conversation:

 - one after rebooting from Windows and connecting to Wi-Fi
 - one after reproducing the "Tails doesn't find my wireless" problem

Yes, the 2 log files that expose this error message (that were renamed
since then by logrotate) have an unusually low boot number. The dates
match the server outages we had in January. I see binary junk instead
of logs in the middle of these files. So grep gives up and does not
parse the remaining of the file. I added --text to force it to
continue and I can now tell by how much the number above is short.

So boots in January are actually:

  782686 + (24309-5155) + (18084-13661) = 806263

I'll record this in our spreadsheet.

Thanks a lot! Such exploratory work is super useful. Not only in terms

use, but also because it tells us what's the best we can currently
hope for, in terms of UX, if hypothetically all those blockers

Usually there's a detached signature (.asc) for

relying purely on HTTPS. But I don't see that file here.

Code changes for 5.11 must be either merged into stable,

I expect images will be ready to test around Saturday, 17:00 UTC.

@nodens and @moire: please let me know how much manual QA you can do
between Saturday, 16:00 UTC, and Monday, 11:00 UTC.

Best case I'll start building late afternoon and we can test tomorrow.

But that's pretty optimistic at this stage. If I had to bet on
something more realistic, I would say I build tomorrow (Wednesday),
testing happens on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, and I release
whenever I find time for it after that. I'm not excluding the
possibility to move the whole release process to Saturday+Sunday,

[Tails-dev] Announcement: Roadmap:YYYYQN labels

2023-02-02 Thread intrigeri
Hi,

After a discussion with Disoj and boyska, we'll now track our roadmap
using quarterly *labels* called Roadmap:QN:

https://gitlab.tails.boum.org/groups/tails/-/labels?subscribed==roadmap%3A

These labels replace:

 - the yearly labels we were using to track our roadmap so far
   (e.g. ~2022 and ~2023)

I'm going to leave alone the issues with these labels: that's
useful historical info, and these issues will get another QN
label if they land on our updated roadmap.

 - the QN milestones

These milestones were never fully integrated into our workflow and
tooling, and they don't work for some of our teams, so they are now
obsoleted by the new labels, which should hopefully work for
   every team.

I'll migrate the issues and MRs that have these milestones to the
new labels (either this week or next week). After which I'll delete
   the QN milestones.

I suppose some teams will have to accordingly update links to
filtered boards and similar. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Tails is based on Debian stable.

We could upgrade KeePassXC if a newer version was available in
bullseye-backports (which is not the case at the moment).

More likely this will have to wait until Tails 6.0.

Re: [Tails-dev] Upcoming release: 5.8~beta1

2022-11-03 Thread intrigeri
Hi,

5.8~beta1 is mostly released¹.

We rarely do beta/RCs these days so I'll explain how this impacts
development work until 5.8 is out:

 - work meant to be included in the *next* stable release, e.g. 5.7
   or a potential 5.6.1:
- forked off the stable branch
- config/base_branch contains "stable"
- target branch of merge request is "stable"

 - work meant to be included in the next *major* release, i.e. Tails 5.8:
- forked off the testing branch
- config/base_branch contains "testing"
- target branch of merge request is "testing"

 - work meant to be included in a future, post-5.8, major release:
- forked off the devel branch
- config/base_branch contains "devel"
- target branch of merge request is "devel"

[1] I'll hold on before I announce it widely (amnesia-news@, Tor blog
post, Twitter) until sajolida had time to improve the call for
testing, e.g. to mention the QR code feature that was merged late.

[Tails-dev] Upcoming release: 5.8~beta1

2022-10-26 Thread intrigeri
Hi,

We've decided to postpone 5.8~beta1 to next week (likely Nov 3),
because there's a chance we have to publish an emergency 5.6.1 release
around Nov 1-2, and we can't really afford to release a 5.8~beta2
immediately after that (that would be 4 releases in a row).

@sysadmins, this means we're now out of "pre-release & release mode",
feel free to deploy disruptive changes that you're confident you can
stabilize by Nov 1st :)

I did not, thanks for the pointer!

I've just suggested the Tor Browser team to consider it:

[Tails-dev] Tails report for May 2022

2022-06-09 Thread intrigeri

Hi,

Here are a few highlights about what we did in May, among many other
things:

*

We implemented many improvements to the Tor Connection assistant. This
makes is much easier for people in Asia to circumvent censorship. For
details, see the Tails 5.1 release notes [1].

*

We wrote a new homepage for the _Unsafe Browser_ when you are not
connected to the Tor network yet. This new version makes it easier to
understand how to sign in to the network using a captive portal.

*

We started organized training and usability tests sessions for August in
Brazil.

*

Tails 5.0 was released on May 3 [2]. It was the first version of Tails
based on Debian 11 (Bullseye) and brought new versions of a lot of the
software included in Tails and new OpenPGP tools.

*

We started evaluating Mirrorbits to manage our download mirror pool. On
top of decreasing the required maintenance work, this should make
downloads of Tails faster and more reliable.

*

Tails has been started more than 769 997 times this month. This makes
24 838 boots a day on average.

Cheers!

[Tails-dev] We'll try to release Tails 5.0 (Bullseye) on May 3

2022-04-21 Thread intrigeri
Hi,

boyska and I just went through the list of 5.0 issues to classify
them as blockers/non-blockers:

https://gitlab.tails.boum.org/tails/tails/-/boards/4?label_name[]=Core%20Work%3AFoundations%20Team_title=Tails_5.0

We believe there's a good chance we manage to fix next week the
blockers we've identified, and thus release 5.0 on May 3 (instead of
4.30 + 5.0~rc1).

There are 2 issues we're not sure about though. We're going to ask UX
(sajolida)'s input about them.

We're using these label semantics on that board:

- P:Elevated → it's a blocker for 5.0
- P:High → it's a blocker for 5.0~rc1

We've been classifying issues as non-blockers quite "aggressively",
because:

 - Releasing 5.0 early avoids the need for another double-release,
which frees 12-15h of FT capacity that we'll be able to spend
elsewhere (e.g. 5.0 known issues, sponsor deliverables).

 - Even if they are regressions, they are not necessarily worse than
dozens (if not hundreds) of other bugs we've been carrying for
years. Even though of course, in some way, a bug one existing users
are used to dealing with have a different standing than a new one.

And there's another thing, that we did not discuss on the team: we're
getting so little feedback about 5.0~beta1 that I don't think another
beta or RC will give us significantly more actionable data to
work with.

Cheers!

I see. It seems DPkg::Pre-Install-Pkgs sends different data to
apt_hook_pre(), when using "apt-get install /path/to/deb", than
what it does when using "apt-get install PACKAGE".

I think apt_hook_pre() should detect and ignore such actions, because
this installation method is not supported for Additional Software.

I don't see this reaching the top of our developers todo list any time
soon (if ever), but we would gladly consider a well-tested merge
request that implements this :)

There's no such plan for the near future. At the moment we lack the
resources and capacity to tackle this big project. Meanwhile, in the
surrounding FOSS community, other people are working on M1 support,
so hopefully when we're ready to tackle this, the dust will have

Hi,

Zen Fu (2022-02-22):

For the labels I proposed to delete, IMO historical metadata will
probably never be useful again. But if affected people have doubts
about this for some of these labels, then I would lean towards being
conservative and deprecate them instead of deleting them.

> If it's desired to maintain such historical metadata, one alternative

This does not achieve one of my goals here: e.g. when I type "install"
in the label selection entry field, the filtered list GitLab gives me
would still have 3 labels, 2 of them being marked as deprecated, while
with my proposal, I would see only 1, which is the one I want.
Same for "security".

But I can live with that too if folks prefer :)

Thanks for making this explicit: I had it in mind when I wrote my
original proposal but forgot to make it clear.

[Tails-dev] Spring cleaning our GitLab labels

2022-02-22 Thread intrigeri
Hi,

We've been using GitLab since a while and I think it's a good time to
make our set of labels a bit leaner and easier to use.

I want to focus on low hanging fruits here. I don't think it's a good
time to take a step down and do a full revamp of our labels.

I propose we:

1. Delete these labels

   - Camouflage: no open issues, probably never coming back
   - I2P: no open issues, probably never coming back
   - Handbook: only 2 open issues, can be tracked just fine with other
 labels
   - Feed Reader: no open issues; can now be tracked with "Email
Client" since Thunderbird is our feed reader nowadays
   - Security Check: 1 open issue, 5 closed issues ⇒ not worth it
   - Verification Extension: we stopped using this a year ago
so at this point I think the drawbacks of keeping this label
outweigh the benefits of listing these 48 closed issues

2. Merge these labels:

   - "C: Installation", "C: Installation Assistant", "C: Installer"
 → "C: Installation"

3. Rename these labels:

   - "T: Test" → something that is harder to confuse with "C: Test
suite"; ideas welcome; if nothing convincing arises I'll skip
 this one.

I'm ready to drop any of these ideas if there are objections from
people who use these labels.

I plan to proceed no earlier than in 2 weeks.

[Tails-dev] Tails report for January 2022

2022-02-09 Thread intrigeri

Tails report for January 2022

 Releases

Tails 4.26 was released on January 11
.

Among other changes, it added a shortcut to open the /Tor Connection/
assistant when starting /Tor Browser/ if Tails is not connected to the
Tor network yet.

 Usability improvements

   Installation pages

We fixed all the low-hanging fruits among the issues identified in
December during usability tests of first-time use
:

 * #18764 :
"Start in macOS" is confusing when obvious
 * #18765 :
QR code in steps is unclear
 * #18771 :
Add screenshot of Plymouth to installation steps
 * #18773 :
   Update time estimates in overview

After which we started a bigger project to restructure our installation
pages. Stay tuned!

   Connecting to Tor

Polishing the user experience of connecting to Tor from Tails is one of
our top priorities for 2021-2023. We are continuously designing and
implementing improvements in this area. Here's the January 2021 edition :)

We noticed a while ago, thanks to usability tests, that users not
accustomed to the GNOME desktop have difficulties connecting to Wi-Fi.
So we made this more discoverable last year, by making Wi-Fi settings
reachable from /Tor Connection/. Unfortunately, while our initial
implementation looked OK in a simplified test environment, it turns out
it was not working in real user scenarios, so we fixed it (#18587
).

 Metrics

Tails has been started more than 773 496 times this month. This makes
24 951 boots a day on average.

Zen Fu kindly fixed the main blocker so I've re-enabled GitLab CI
for the tails/tails project as an experiment.

Note that sysadmins are not maintaining the current GitLab CI runner
as if it were in production, so things will break and developers
shan't complain to sysadmins.

I'll re-evaluate in a week or two. If the setup is too fragile, we can
try boyska's idea of making the CI pipeline run only manually.

[Tails-dev] Running GitLab CI locally in unprivileged podman containers

2021-11-02 Thread intrigeri
Hi,

Here's how I run GitLab CI jobs locally in unprivileged podman
containers (I really would prefer not to run a Docker daemon on my
laptop). In a nutshell:

1. Install necessary packages:

sudo apt install gitlab-runner podman-docker mmdebstrap

2. Create a suitable gitlab-runner-helper container

I used the attached script, heavily based on
   /usr/lib/gitlab-runner/mk-prebuilt-images.sh

Run it as your normal user, not as root.

3. Profit!

   For example:

   gitlab-runner exec docker --docker-host "unix:///run/user/$(id
-u)/podman/podman.sock" check-po-meta-date

Disclaimers
===

- I had to pin the docker.io package to -1, because it's recommended
by docker-compose, which is itself recommended by podman-docker.
Otherwise you end up with a Docker daemon.

- This is from memory and there might be missing steps. It could be
nice if someone reproduced this, fixed whatever needs to be fixed,
and migrated it into /contribute/ on our website.

- Some stuff is hardcoded in the attached script (GitLab runner
version, HTTP proxy), which is not ideal.

- If it's not running yet, you might need to explicitly enable the
  podman.socket user unit:

  systemctl --user --now enable podman.socket

I'll be the RM for 4.24, unless anonym takes it over a week before the
release.

Any change meant to be included in this release must be merged
by Friday, Oct 29, 10:00 UTC.

This release should include a major upgrade: Tor Browser based on
Firefox 91. We won't have the capacity to do a release candidate
but we should be able to at least call for testing of a nightly build.

Dear technical writers, please account for the corresponding potential
doc updates.

Yes, somewhat:
https://gitlab.tails.boum.org/tails/tails/-/issues/14578#note_176989

The main unknown right now is who is going to start working on this,
and when. We're still discussing this on the Foundations Team.

In general we don't have resources to add support ourselves for
specific computers, so we rely on work happening upstream and
in Debian.

However, if you find out what needs to be added/changed in Tails to
fix this, we can certainly check if it's feasible (for example, we
could add missing firmware).

In any case, it could be useful to other users to know this is to be
expected (via our known issues page). I'm putting you in touch with
our Help Desk, who will ask you more information we need for this to
happen, starting with… which Microsoft Surface laptop, exactly,
as I see there are plenty:

So it fails at this line:

  ifstatus_line['not created']

… apparently because status_line is nil.

I suggest you add some debugging to the vm_state method,
in order to figure out why status_line is nil. I would start
by printing the value of the "out" variable.

[Tails-dev] Heads up: update your personal test suite configuration

2021-08-17 Thread intrigeri
Hi,

If you run our test suite locally, you have 2 XMPP accounts configured in
features/config/local.yml. Most likely they are riseup.net accounts.

Riseup will soon stop their XMPP service, so you have to create 2 new
XMPP accounts elsewhere and update your features/config/local.yml
accordingly.
