I agree that, if Tails was to include software for another
cryptocurrency, it should be Monero.

We have a FAQ about adding more software to Tails:

https://tails.boum.org/support/faq#new_software

If a software is not included in Tails, but is included in Debian, you
can use the Additional Software feature of the Persistent Storage to
install it automatically every time you start Tails.

I see that the monero CLI and server is already in Debian but that the
shape of the package is not super great:

https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/monero

I can't find any GUI for it in Debian.

If the Monero project upstream is serious about Linux adoption, they
should be the ones working on having it in Debian. I don't think that
Tails should do this work.

I think it is a great idea to include Monero onto Tails. Monero is a very
mainstream coin as an alternative to Bitcoin.

Electrum is a privacy nightmare unless you run your own electrum server.
Which most people do not do. Even if electrum is kept for compatibility
reasons I think we should at least include a more privacy focused bitcoin
wallet like Wasabi. Wasabi wallet can be built reproducible.

Right now Monero is better for privacy and by default. But I think we
should still keep Bitcoin support on Tails because Bitcoin is way more
mainstream than Monero and there is still a need to be able to use
Bitcoin. My suggestion is include Monero cli because monero cli can be
built reproducible. And monero cli client is better. But if Monero gui can
be built reproducible in tails then to include that as a user easy to use
option for the less tech savy. And to include Wasabi wallet for bitcoin.

Bitcoin lightning network support in tails would be nice also. I am not
sure what wallet would be best for that. I know the latest version of
electrum in beta now has support for lightning. I am hoping Wasabi Wallet
eventually includes lightning network support.

If electrum wallet is kept in tails what about idea to include electrum
personal server software with tails to promote more privacy? Electrum is a
great wallet but is horrible with privacy if you do not use your own
server or electrum personal server.

2020-07-13 Thread theoneandonlyjk89--- via Tails-dev
Obviously, the team over at TAILS would also thoroughly comb through the code
and the Debian package to make sure it's safe for their operating system.
Essentially, that would be four major Internet Privacy Devs looking over this
project to make sure it launches on Tails OS system safely.
The four teams over at Whonix, Monero, Debian and Tails are all going to need
to work together on this one.
This is a major project.
Monero launch on Tails OS would be an epic game-changer! I promise.

OS list of pre-installed programs.
If we have both Whonix devs and Monero devs overseeing the code of this package

Tails operating system.
If Monero and Whonix work together with Debian, I feel like the next logical

If we can push the Monero GUI and the Monero CLI onto the official Tails OS, it
would go a very long way in terms of financial privacy on the Tails OS.
Right now, the Tails platform is using Electrum as it's main crypto currency
Wallet, which uses Bitcoin.
I'm sure we can all agree that Bitcoin is not at all private, as the entire
Blockchain is accessible to anyone with cheap Blockchain Analysis Tools and
Software.
Eventually, Debian and the Tails OS devs should phase in a more privacy
oriented coin.
Monero would be the best bet, in terms of consumer privacy and financial
freedom.
Let's get this done as soon as possible.

This would be a big win for privacy and privacy advocates all agree on Monero
being the most private crypto currency there is.
Along with Tails being a very secure operating system and with the Debian team
also looking at the code to make sure everything is transparent, this just
makes sense at this point in 2020.

Hi,

Jim via Tails-dev:

We did, but at the time no Monero client was available in Debian:

  https://redmine.tails.boum.org/code/issues/14390
  https://redmine.tails.boum.org/code/issues/15686
  https://redmine.tails.boum.org/code/issues/13443

But now I see that the Monero *command-line* client is available in
Debian (including stretch-backports).

> It would make perfect send for Tails to come pre-installed with

I see no Monero GUI in Debian so our reply on the aforementioned
tickets still applies: I don't think we should install a command-line
Monero with no GUI by default.

Still, if someone wants to work on Monero support in Tails, with
a target audience that's fine with the command line, next steps would
be to install the Monero client on Tails (apt install
monero/stretch-backports), test it, and figure out what it takes to
make it work fine.

Note that the package description reads:

Beware that full global transaction history (blockchain) is stored locally,
which may require very large amounts of disk space.
 .
Disk space requirements (as of June 2018):
~40 gigabyte data, ~50 gigabyte on disk, growing ~2 gigabyte per month.
 More info at .

… which might not work well with Tails persistent volumes on USB sticks.

Cheers,

[Tails-dev] Monero client on Tails

2019-01-09 Thread Jim via Tails-dev
Has the Tails development considered pre-installing the full Monero client onto
the TAILS OS?

Electrum is already pre-installed, but that is only good for bitcoin, which is
not exactly anonymous.

Monero has proven to be the most private and secure cryptocurrency out there
right now.

It would make perfect send for Tails to come pre-installed with either the full
Monero GUI client.

If that is too much for Tails to handle then maybe some type of lightweight
wallet for Monero such as lightWallet, or the user-friendly MoneroX Gui.___

Sure, one gets root inside Tails and can install whatever they want,
the only limit being (in most cases) your technical skills.

Now, what we install in Tails by default and what less technical users
can install is another topic: it has to be in Debian first.
