So I think a best bet is to go directly the long term way, and have
the backend support the usecase described above. In that case, the
only needed UI change is the removal of the warning text.

This does refresh the .pot file, but does not seem to refresh the .po
files. Am I mistaken?
The resulted 'build' directory could be safely removed.
Probably should be added to .gitignore then.

the software maintainer's responsibility to
provide up-to-date .po files that translators can just pick and
complete. Providing obsolete .po files inevitably leads to wasted
efforts of translators.

Running the test in a VM, and inspecting the VM memory from the host
system, should also work. We should have a look to the toolbox used by
Andrew Case when auditing our Live systems memory.
