try opening the settings pull down and shift tab into the list of files. w

What do you mean by the speak characters setting? Could tell us what
exactly you did to change that setting?

this has happened tome 2 times and i could not save my settings.

I may have missed the beginning of this discussion, but I will give you some
suggestions for saving settings in Window-eyes:
First of all, Make sure that in the keyboard settings that you have selected
the layout that you want. I always use the Window-eyes default layout.
