Hi:

Well, I've played with Narrator, even the one in the build 15002 of Windows,
and, it has a long way to go to come close to even NVDA, System Access, Jaws
or Window-Eyes.

I hope we still have a few choices, because, I would be very upset if
Narrator was the only game in town.

The speech engines from Microsoft are about as responsive as an old serial
synthesizer running at about 10 baud. In short, they suck, as far as
responsiveness is concerned. Sure, they sound ok, but, they're falling
short of the mark in everything else.

On the Mac platform, I was blown away by Alex's responsiveness. Alex is a
great voice, and, if you've never used a Mac, you just won't believe how
responsive Alex is. And, with the Mac even being faster, I imagine Alex is
even more responsive.

Anyway, with all due respect, Microsoft would have a lot of catching up to
do before they can even touch NVDA, let alone the paid screen-readers.

Dave,

Thank you for your thoughtful email.

As you will see from my signature I have moved much of my personal computing
to the Apple platform. However, for my job I still use Windows and several
of the screen readers/magnifiers on that platform.

The evolution of computing for individuals continues and the support of
Window Eyes is just part of a larger phenomenon, exemplified by cheaper
adaptive solutions for the blind and vision-impaired. If Microsoft follows
Apple and improves Narrator to the point where it competes favorably with
the expensive screen readers we have used for the last 25 years or so, it
won’t be just WE that fades away. The economic model of the thousand dollar
screen reader will be untenable.

I am disappointed that industry insiders seemed unable or unwilling to
investigate what has been going on.

Such investigations are expensive, but the NFB used to be very good at
exposing unethical and dishonest behaviour. Those occasional lifting
the lids on bad agency practices were what made the Braille Monitor
credible.

Maybe such an investigation article is pending - they take time to

There wil be tax records, and I guess that all companies have some

Anyway, with all due respect, Microsoft would have a lot of catching up to do
before they can even touch NVDA, let alone the paid screen-readers.

Dave,

Thank you for your thoughtful email.

As you will see from my signature I have moved much of my personal computing to
the Apple platform. However, for my job I still use Windows and several of the
screen readers/magnifiers on that platform.

The evolution of computing for individuals continues and the support of Window
Eyes is just part of a larger phenomenon, exemplified by cheaper adaptive
solutions for the blind and vision-impaired. If Microsoft follows Apple and
improves Narrator to the point where it competes favorably with the expensive
screen readers we have used for the last 25 years or so, it won’t be just WE
that fades away. The economic model of the thousand dollar screen reader will
be untenable.

Stan

Re: Circling and Circling Round and Round

2017-01-29 Thread Vaughan Dodd via Talk
The latest Podcast from Blind Bargains discusses this topic. The VFO
grab and squash, (my spin) is the number one event of 2016 according to
the panel members, and there is consensus that the merger, which is part
of an industry wide contraction, may not be truly beneficial to end users.

Whilst people try and be optimistic, I feel that we can probably
conclude that for Windows based screen readers, the future looks bleak.
An over-priced bloated product in JFW, a free product in NVDA which
won't find its place in employment settings, and a very good product,
mid-priced, which is seeing its reputation being trashed by VFO.

Given that everyone here thinks Window-Eyes is the best, I cannot
understand why it is not beginning to benefit from all the software
development talent which VFO has acquired, along with the marketing
reach of VFO.

Dave: thanks for the balanced opinion which you have given.

same lines as Vaughn's. There are some disturbing signs, that all has
not been well at GW Micro, or for the future of Window Eyes.

BW Micro had a great staff and many had been their for years. When that

New Company does with its new acquisitions.

The personal service we all received from GW Micro is probably gone for
good. Large companies tend to be less caring, and do not allow their
employees to have the same amount of liberty as the staff of a much
smaller company might experience.

Large Companies tend to move slower, and fix problems when they get
around to it. usually when the problem is causing a loss in money
coming in.

I am Thankful for the Support I was given when the most recent update
was made available. Without this, all of us would be using NVDA today.

I do expect Window Eyes will be continuing, but at a much slower pace
than before.

There may come a time when Microsoft does a new Windows 11, or 12, that

We all have seen changes in the staff, and other issues that were slow
to be addressed. And so the speculations begin, and will continue.
Call in Human Nature. Few of us like Surprises.

And lets face it, all of us here have invested a fair amount of cash
into Window Eyes, and to start over With JAWS or something else isn't
something I really want to do, unless I find myself with no other
choices.

All of us are along for the ride, where ever it might go. If Window

adjust as changes come.As Blind people, we all have had to make many
adjustments along the Path we all have walked.

All of us will do what we need to do when the time comes.

Hi There!
I certainly do agree that the negativity should end, and yes, I do
understand that folks have the right to say and write what they wish,
but try using some common sense when you do write. Until I here the
official word from AiSquared that W.E. is no longer inproduction I will
not believe Window-Eyes is dead. And yes, they are still selling the
SMAs and that doesn't sound as though they are dead in any way shape or
form. Have A Good 1! de

SJW stands for social justice warrior.
I do believe the negativity needs to end here, because it's not
helping anyone. Until I hear further, Window-eyes, as a program at
least, is still valid, it works well and in most cases, at least for
my use case, does what it's supposed to. If a program receives a
patch update, despite people's assertions that the program is "dead",
that means in my book that the program is still in active development.
I am a paying customer here just like anyone else. i purchased my
copy of Window-eyes using the LTO program back in 2011, and if/when
my SMA count comes up for renewal, i'll purchase an upgrade. People
can certainly say what they want, if people want to think Window-eyes
is dead it's on them.

There may come a time when Microsoft does a new Windows 11, or 12, that
makes Window Eyes un=usable. The folks at the top of this Big New
Company will need to decide whether to invest the money and resources to
update Window Eyes, or just push Window Eyes into the Trash Bin, and
make all of us an offer to upgrade to JAWS.

Speculations are nothing more than responding to signs of impending
change to come.

If Window
Eyes lives on, Great! And if Not, then Not so Great, but we all will
adjust as changes come.As Blind people, we all have had to make many
adjustments along the Path we all have walked.

All of us will do what we need to do when the time comes.

Grumpy Dave
