The buffalo router you have is a stripped down DDWRT, IE buffalos own. While it is accessible routers running DDWRT are very accessible. I have a nighthawk from Netgear running the firmware. Also stock firmware running on Asus routers is accessible. Stock firmware on the netgears is also accessible. Hope this helps. I think you should test it also downstairs with your iphone. Wi-fi signals, the walls, pipes, etc. could be enterfering with the type of signal you're receiving upstairs. So before tossing your lynksis, if you haven't already done so, then make sure to do the speed test with your iphone closest to the router. I like the ASUS WI-FI routers. The installation disk is pretty simple to use if you stick to the recommended standard settings. Your also notified when installation is complete. You might look at the Asus and Netgear brands. The last Linksys I tried wasn't but the Asus and Netgear stock firmware seems to be accessible. I also tried a tp-link archer and it also failed the accessibility test. It wasn't fun to use and was promptly returned. If you wanted to install third party firmware on your router the DD-WRT firmware is accessible. Just some thoughts.
