I wonder if this could be expanded to also capture the relevant emergency use channel for the area.

The use case in mind, is in relation to the pastoral leases, in outback SA, operate repeaters for their own use, but are also there for emergency use.

See page 9-12 of this PDF (noting that this is just provided for illustrative purposes only, as unsure on the license):

https://www.oca.sa.gov.au/resources/4WD-Tracks-and-Repeater-Towers.pdf

(page 1 provides the guidance on use/etiquette).

The challenge with including this is should it be captured on the relevant road section, or on the repeater tower and the data consumer then needs to work out coverage?

These channels are usually advertised on road signs located at the boundaries between pastoral leases on the main through route, so there may be Mapillary or KartaView photos of the signs to use as a source.

Hi group,

I just came across this Map-A-Thon by chance, apologies if it has been shared already and I missed it:

https://sssi.org.au/fire-map-a-thon/about-map-a-thon

Extract from the above page:

The SSSI National Bushfire Recovery Map-a-thon is being held on Sunday, 9th February, 2020 and registrations are now open!  To register visit: SSSI National Bushfire Recovery Map-a-thon

SSSI is thankful to the surveying and geospatial community for reaching out to assist with the bushfire recovery effort and for the continued offers of assistance from individuals and businesses from within Australia and globally.

From reading through the pages, they are going to be using OpenStreetMap in conjunction with government data and imagery, so not sure if they have any new datasets/imagery layers that we haven't already mentioned on the list...

Re: [talk-au] Unauthorised bike trails in national parks

2015-08-09 Thread Stephen Backway

Thanks Tony for providing your images.

I see those signs quite often and dont register them when I ride.

https://app.box.com/s/wawk2d19abv5ic65h5daslgqj6xrhqut

If this sign is to be taken literally (as in what is on the ground) the only formed management trail is the Dargon Track and Lanes track and small sections of the other tracks. As the tracks are not formed, or maintained by Parks (with the exception of a lawn mow here or there for fire management purposes). Therefore all other trails including this one should have an appropriate access tag that reflects this. (not specific restrictions)

The long worded sign identifies that if you are not allowed to ride there is a no bikes symbol is displayed. (https://app.box.com/s/t66300e74l19nr9dwsl7h9b8l25jt0bd)

Similar statement here:

http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0008/315692/Park-note-Lysterfield-Lake-mountain-bike-riding.pdf

Both maps on the parks site are out of date and do not show all the signed tracks, let alone the unsigned tracks that are used my many visitors to the area. Just because it doesnt appear on a map doesnt mean it doesnt exist.

Im happy to wait, but I already know the response from the ranger, who doesnt want to expose himself to further liabilities.

(If you could, can you ask him what regulation governs the restriction to ride a bike on an existing trails? (I know you arent allowed to make them, but if they exist I would be interested to see the legal requirement)).

Thanks.

Stephen.

map the authorised trails and indicate that the use of other trails is
illegal. We do not always rely on on ground signage for tagging, for
example footpaths would be tagged as cars=no even though there are no
barriers or signs.

Re the name of the trail, it is unclear how widely the name Ant Trail
is known, it is not supported on the ground by eg signage.

I spoke briefly with the head ranger Lysterfield last week and expect
to talk again in the next 2 days and hope to get an official answer on
(a) the exact legal status of these trails
(b) whether Parks Vic has a position on how they should be mapped

So please hold off retagging for a couple of days.

Thanks

They are using Mapbox, which provides the attribution string (it's in the
source code) but its up to the user to display it appropriately.

Looks like they didn't read this page when they set it up:

Brett,

Good to here that you are gaining confidence and are working it out.

I'm not sure where you are seing the incomplete [id 12345567] error, however
when you are in the relation editing window there is a button on the left hand
side that (for me it is 2nd from the bottom), lets you download all the
ways/nodes from that the relation. Maybe this will help with the error.

Hi Steve

Thanks for that information. Gradually getting the hang of them on the simple
examples but when I struck Lake Gordon wonder what on earth the incomplete [id
31755640] meant. It looks like an error message but as you commented earlier
the lake is rendering as it should. Do notice that in JOSM the lake does not
render correctly once I split a way and then refine it probably due to the size
of the lake exceeding the downloadable segment.

Due to the size of the Lake I am splitting sections out and tracing them in
with more nodes and then reconnecting them. The delay in tile render can make
this a bit challenging to check but looks like based on your notes that I am
doing the right thing.

And finally mastering getting maps on my Garmin with contours and rendered like
mapnik. Thanks to a fellow list member I now can update the Australia pbf file
and also extract contours for any part of the globe that has them. Typviewer
means I can create or steal icons. Gradually figuring out the style sheet
plus a few Garmin idiosyncrasies that mean things like resolution levels do not
work past a certain pre-set Garmin point.

Next step will be implementing sac_scale for walking tracks and revisiting the
unpaved road issue. Plus seeing if I can liberate the higher 1 second contour
line scans that were down as part of the SRTM contours for Australia.

Re: [talk-au] Who to create a OSM Wikipedia information page

2013-07-16 Thread Stephen Backway
Brett,

I assume that you are referring to the OSM wiki, not Wikipedia:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Main_Page

If this is the case, you do not need any special editors at all (just your
favourite web browser).

The first step would be to go to the wiki and sign up for an account.

Once this is done you can edit pages, so find a spot in the wiki where you
think there should be more information what you want to do and either:
1) add it to an existing page, or
2) edit the page to link to a wiki page with the right title, once that is done
click on the link to the new page and edit it with the new information.

The syntax for creating headings/links/images etc is rather simple and brief
look into the source (button on each wiki page) will show you the syntax. See
this page for style guides and hints:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Help:Wiki-Editing

Hope this makes sense,

Stephen.

Thanks to the enormous efforts and patience of a mailing list member, I am
gradually battling through the process of creating img files for Garmin on a

 G
iven that I can find no clear guides to creating Garmin img files using Windows
machines I would like to document the process and put up a Wikipedia entry on
the process.I am not sure how to do this and would like a few pointers such as
login and editors to use, and even confirmation that it is possible.I would
like to do it now as nothing like writing instructions before you become
familiar and start assuming and abstracting away things plus steps that once
made your life difficult.

Anyway, as usual, any help and pointers would be appreciated.

[talk-au] Disconnected ways, almost connected nodes and crossing ways - user goldfishxyz

2013-07-15 Thread Stephen Backway
Hello,

I have been monitoring one of Geofabrik's quality assurance sites and fixing
errors (if appropriate) etc:
http://tools.geofabrik.de/osmi/?view=routinglon=146.39491lat=-36.03879zoom=6

About a month ago I had the state of Victoria almost cleaned up, with only some
issues in Melbourne shown on the map (a lot of these are false positives, and
take a while to get through).

However recently I have noticed new errors appearing, in the form of
disconnected ways, ways that just end short and also crossing ways (when there
should be a node). These have been made by the user goldfishxyz, I have tried
to contact this user directly via the openstreetmap messaging system, but have
not had a response (the user is still creating more errorneous edits).

So goldfishxyz are you on this mailing list?

What other action should I be taking?
Since noticing the new edits, I have fixed a few, but left the majority there
so I can highlight them to this user. I don't really want to continue to clean
the map, I would prefer to educate the person so they know of the issue.

Regards,
Stephen
