with place=*
ie place=town, name=Etterbeek
Then the tool count the amount of nodes (every type) around this place
and if it's below a certain number it's flagged as sparsely or if

I assume you took the projection into account? Plainly doing ST_Length
will sum the projected length of the roads. The real length will be much
lower.

I took this a challenge ;).
You can scratch 'Gomery' from the sparsely mapped places.
I like this list a lot. When I get bored with my own community, I tend
to search for 'empty' spots on the map, an try to bingify them.
Your list is a great resource for that!
And the OSM stats keep impressing
