Hi list Sorry for writing in English again as my Estonian is still too weak. I noticed that a lot of abbreviations such as mnt and pst have appeared on the map where maantee and puiestee used to be. Vitalts had made this change, motivated by information on the Estonian OSM wiki page:

I don't see that the main renderers (mapnik) and search engines (nominatim) will handle Estonian street name abbreviations properly any time soon. Actually, nominatim has an abbreviation database that it automatically consults. But this mechanism assumes that the full long is in OSM and the

Excellent, so there is agreement on the expansion of these abbreviations. I am curious why your opinion is different when it comes to maantee and the like. It cannot be purely because these make street names longer - Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwaldi is much longer than F.R. Kreutzwaldi after

The key difference is that mnt-maantee is in theory and also practically 100% automatically replaceable, abbreviated first name like P. is never. So if needed we can replace all the mnt and pst during postprocessing or even with database bot. Jaak On 04.01.2012, at 15:06, Bartosz
