[OSM-talk] 10th anniversary - Iceland and Botswana progress
Greetings fellow map-makers. In honor of todays 10th birthday of OpenStreetMap it is my great pleasure to have sent in an application today for my society, Hliðskjálf, to become the Local Chapter for Iceland operating as OpenStreetMap á Íslandi. It is also my great pleasure to officially open the Botswana version of OpenStreetMap. You can read the ambitious mission statement (2 year window to complete the map) on the about page and on the map page itself I'm very pleased with the drop-down menus to help people find their settlement easily. http://www.openstreetmap.org.bw/about.php Regards, Jóhannes / Stalfur on OSM ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] OSM 10th Anniversary - Map for humanitarian emergencies
Mapping for Emergencies like Ebola for international emergencies gives a lot of media coverage to OpenStreetMap. For this 10th anniversary, let show our capacity to escalate for the ungoing humanitarian disasters. Following the declaration friday 8 by the World Health Organization (WHO) that Ebola outbreak an 'international public health emergency', they again count on the OpenStreetMap community. For Gaza, the Shelter cluster, CICR, and other agencies also need detailed maps that they intend to use to compare with recent imagery for damage assessment. Please, come and help using the HOT Tasking Manager. http://tasks.hotosm.org Contributions So far today, Ebola 16 contributors have mapped 13,518 objects Gaza 5 contributors have mapped 2,183 buildings.
Re: [Talk-GB] Marks Sparks...
From a quick look, there seems to be a lot wrong with osmmaker's edits. It appears he has indiscriminately selected all objects in the world tagged with 'Marks and Spencer' (and variant spellings) and then added a load of tags. No checks seem to have been done to confirm whether the things he's changing are real 'Marks and Spencer' stores. This has led to tags like 'brand' and 'website' being wrongly added to things like bus stops, public transport stop areas and car parks. His earlier edits also wrongly changed an MS distribution warehouse. I think consultation before making mass changes is essential. Undiscussed edits of this sort often degrade the data and should not be tolerated. Regards, Will On 09/08/2014 10:35, Dave F. wrote: Hi So, apart from the non discussion being supposedly /wrong/. [Talk-us] Quest for foolish consistency
While visiting some relatives in a small town (actually only really a CDP but there is a post office and the county maintains a court house and sheriffs station here) I have been doing morning walks to collect address data and to verify street names per the county placed signage. The Tiger data, including the 2013 overlay, list all streets with cardinal prefixes (e.g. North Estill Drive) while none of the signs do that (e.g. Estill Drive). So I have been removing the North, East, etc. prefixes from the names so that OSM matches the signs posted on the ground. Most of the streets are short enough that there is no issue with them crossing to a different cardinal location. However the main east-west road, signed for the whole length as American Ave has numbers for both East American Avenue and West American Avenue. I think I know where the east-west dividing line is based on the numbering but there is no indication based on the street signs. What I have been doing is: For streets that only have one cardinal value, remove that so it matches the actual signs. For streets that have both a north and south segment or an east and west segment, leaving the prefix on the name even though it does not match the actual signs. Does this seem reasonable?
