I just looked at taginfo. They didn't had a link to this page. For me,
that proposal page is sufficient, since it is now documented what you
mean with it.
Getting the proposal approved will only bring unneeded administrative work imho.
So I learned something new today, thanks Julien !

Re: [talk-au] Position magazine: looking for perspectives on G-NAF

2016-03-01 Per discussione Andrew Harvey
Hey Anthony,

I'm happy to address any specific questions you have, but be aware
that there is no one person who represents OSM for comments to the
media, rather we are a bunch of contributors each with their own
thoughts and views.

My thoughts are it's great that this data has finally been released as
it will result in much added value to various users.

In the long run I would love to see this data integrated into OSM, but I
think we want to ensure we have a proper plan and not just rush into an
import with out thinking it through and having a plan first.

Questions I think we as the OSM community need to deal with include:

* How can we deal with the GNAF license? It includes a restriction on
creating using the data for sending mail, of course we don't want and
won't impose such a restriction on OSM, hence it's immediately not
compatible. We need a solid understanding of if this is an issue from
a legal perspective and how we can resolve it.

* If licensing is resolved then the next issue is how does the data in
GNAF compare with existing address data in OSM. I don't think we want
to just delete all addresses within OSM and dump in GNAF. We want to
merge the two datasources such that if addressing is already in OSM
and correct, we'll leave that and not include the entry from GNAF. I'm
working on generating some reports at the moment which will show how
  widespread this is.

* If an import did happen, then how do we want to deal with a
continually updated GNAF and continually updated OSM. Would we keep
updating untouched GNAF derived addresses imported into OSM and not
update the rest, or flag the rest to be re-checked in OSM, etc.

* Personally I think OSM should in it's primary tags, map what's on the
ground not what the authoritative says should be on the ground. If the
authoritative data says there is street here named X, but the street
signs say it's named Y, it should have the primary tag Y and an
official_name or authoritive_name of X. For this reason, I think there
are valid reasons where OSM would be different than GNAF.

At the moment, the easiest way forward for most folks wanting free and
open geospatial data is to use OSM + GNAF (so combine them within the
application rather than within the OSM database). I think long term it
would be great to integrate them at a lower level in the OSM database,
but for now this combine at the application level approach is a very
straight foward way for folks to use open geospatial data.

These are just my thoughts, would love for others to weigh in on
their thinking.

Cheers,

Since you mention department store, I guess I have to update the
Carrefour entry on the wiki and split it according to the size of the
"supermarket". Carrefour Hypermarkets should probably be department
stores, after all they sell more than the regular supermarket.

I am wondering how a Fnac shop should be tagged. There are only 2
shops mapped so far in Belgium. One is mapped as shop=yes, the other
as electronics.

[Talk-us] Virginia Beach, Virginia Imports

2016-03-01 Per discussione Jonah Adkins
Hey OSM-ers.

I'd like to propose an import of city-sourced GIS data for the City of Virginia
Beach, Va. The City GIS Office has given the data / license for this purpose.
Conflation will be done carefully by hand, and attributes copied where needed.
142k buildings / 115k with addresses — 81%!!
More info/sample data at links below
Two items of note: there is a geoid field which i will use for splitting the
blogs into small sections for import, but will be deleted before. The height
field will be adjusted before importing as well.

Let's not be too hasty in removing large amounts of data, imported years ago
and subsequently edited by several users in various ways, simply because it may
or may not be compatible with a future OSM license. If you guys are 100% sure
this import contravened ODbL, or if the City of Ottawa's lawyers contact OSM
with concerns, then by all means redact it. But to me, and I admittedly don't
know much when it comes to licensing, we should leave this alone for the time
being.
This isn't something that needs to be re-imported every year. Minor changes to
the bus network that occur from time to time can be updated by hand by local
users. I see some updates have already taken place since the import was made.
As for duplicate bus stops resulting from a node predating the import: I've
come across this at least once in the past in a neigbourhood I was editing
after a recent visit to Ottawa. I merged the tags and deleted the more recent
stop.

Note to James, I seem to recall Stats Canada addresses which have been
imported recently were done through the open data portal Gov Canada.
Perhaps Ottawa might like to release the GTFS data through there?
Especially since it was given to Google without strings I understand.

That would be "Sa[-1]":
Sa[1] is the first Saturday, Sa[2] the second, etc.
Similarly, Sa[-1] is the last Saturday, Sa[-2] the one before, etc.

You can use [1] to evaluate your value. The syntax is explained at [2], albeit
not very clearly.

Rob,

Apologies, I spoke too soon. Having scrolled down I found the project and
I'm already 5 changesets in.

Not sure about what to put as the source tag so pasting in the EduBase2
url. If there is a convention on this, please advise so I can use this
going forward.

Thinking aloud for future events like this, if someone could rig up a
realtime changesets map that would make it even more enjoyable. In the
meantime, http://resultmaps.neis-one.org/osm-changesets?comment=OSMschool

Up to 320 edits on schools today :-) Which is getting close to the daily
record of 397 for the quarterly project (way back in January).

We're also just 3 edits away from a "create" record - Harry's tool measures
creations and modifications.

Great mapping effort this evening. Thanks for all the help.

These nodes seem to be admin centres of countries. They are part of

Hello,

I understand that there is no clear agreement to use PICC for OSM but it
is said and written by different persons from the government that there
is nothing against the use of those data for OSM and that we don't risk
that data have to be deleted in the future.
It means that besides SPW aerial imagery also the data on the PICC map
may be used. Does this include the dimensions of the buildings, the
house numbers, the names of the streets and the names of rivers, woods,
farms and so on?

No tak pokud bych se mel ridit predevsim mistni znalosti a intenzitou provozu a
zarazeni celostatni/regionalni bych bral jako orientacni pak bych v tomto
pripade (i z hlediska uzivatelu mapy - tedy siroke verejnosti) uprednostnil
branch (tedy jako lokalku). Tak by to odpovidalo soucasnemu vyuziti trate, (bez

upravy v OSM vyzaduje to nejaky casovy a administrativni proces).

bych si z toho tu branch stejne udelal u sebe).

http://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/48847#map=12/50.0122/14.2599=T

nizke tratove rychlosti, bez elektrifikace).

Hi,

We mapped some "marchés gratuits" with this tag. The pitch of those
"marchés gratuits" : you can leave in a box items you do not need, and
other people might pick them.

There is a proposed feature for this :
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Reuse

Example : http://1000bxlentransition.be/marche-gratuit/

Problem : some of them are permanent, some are only once/month (and I
didn't know it on Saturday - we should have prepared this.

What we could do :

- relaunch procedure for this tag proposal ;
- add some "opening hours" to explain when the market take place. But I
do not know how to map "the last Saturday of the month"...

[Talk-it] Mappare reperti bellici

all'aperto che comprende diversi manufatti bellici e ordigni (resi innocui)
parlo: http://www.fmboschetto.it/Lonate_Pozzolo/viadiGaggio.htm

Yes, it might be worth considering. I'm hoping we can find someone to speak
at all the different locations. It would be nice to have Pete Masters talk
to us through digital channels though.
I don't think a remote presentation would have quite the same impact as a
local one. But it might be useful to have an open line with all the other
events.Though in practice maybe IRC will work better - and not be as
sensitive to bandwidth issues.

I'm wondering if it would make sense to set up a video link between all
these locations. At KU Leuven we use Lync (Skype for Business) for this,
it's easy to set up a conference call with that. I'm not entirely sure
about the usefulness though. Except if speakers who want to address
everyone can obviously only be at one of the locations.

Hi,

We have a nice conversation with them going now *. This is going to be
pretty big: six universities in the three regions, all working on
OpenStreetMap. We might have some press attention, and it's a great
opportunity to grow our community in five different cities.

We're going to need a lot of volunteers: there are six events, all at the
same time, and there should be at least one mapper at every event.
If you want to help out, please register here:

ULB: http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Belgium/events/229258344/
VUB: http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Belgium/events/229258398/
KUL: http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Belgium/events/229260162/

UNamur: http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Belgium/events/229260291/
ULG: http://www.meetup.com/OpenStreetMap-Belgium/events/229260644/

In the ideal case, that mapper is willing to give an introduction about
OpenStreetMap, the Missing Maps and get people started mapping in iD. You
do not have to be an expert, but of course it would be easy if you have a
bit of African mapping experience. You can make your own presentation if
you want to, but we're co-creating all the material you need.
If you don't like to do presentations, maybe you can just help new mappers,
stuck when choosing between tertiary road and track.

Or you could help in the preparation of the documentation and
presentations. Here's an overview of the tasks, includes some translation
work.

FYI, I've just updated my comparison tool at

We now have matches to 75% of the schools in the official data.
(Though of course not all of these will be correct.)

Keep up the good work everyone,

I'm following the maproulette tasks which means lots of Wales. It's easy to
get sidetracked as the data is often poor here!

Maybe a focus for a future quarter...

Ahoj,

umí, včetně možností pojmenovaných waypointů, fotek a obecně příloh k
waypointům, automatický upload dokončené trasy na Dropbox/GDrive/etc,
dlaždicové/WMS/offline dlaždice/offline vektorové mapy (MapsForge), možnost
mapu/waypointy i naklikat ručně, plnohodnotná tvorba a editace stop, grafy
k záznamům (rychlost/čas etc), import/export GPX/KML/atd., integrace s
jinymi mapovymi aplikacemi (ČÚZK info, Vespucci, GStreetView),
online/offline routing (BRouter), stínování mapy a vyskova mapa přes SRTM,

You're best to copy the postcode/name from maproulette in to the edubase
search:

http://www.education.gov.uk/edubase/home.xhtml

I agree that an easier tool for these sort of "manual imports with
validation" would be good but lets make the most of what we have.

You're best to copy the postcode/name from maproulette in to the edubase
search:

http://www.education.gov.uk/edubase/home.xhtml

I agree that an easier tool for these sort of "manual imports with
validation" would be good but lets make the most of what we have.

The sub-areas also do not have (or do not always have) well-defined
boundaries. The park itself is well-defined (and already has a
multipolygon border), but most of the sub-areas would either be nodes or
areas whose edges aren't really authoritative.

At the moment, there's a single multipolygon for the entire state park,
tagged leisure=park and boundary=protected_area, protect_class=5. The
individual areas are generally nodes tagged leisure=park with names like
"Patapsco Valley State Park - McKeldin Area". The whole park-in-a-park
thing feels a little off to me, but it does get the names rendered on the
default map. :-/

(Elliott knows all this, but I thought it might be useful information for
the discussion.)

[Talk-us] Strategy for Naming Parts of a Large Park

2016-03-01 Per discussione Elliott Plack
The Patapsco Valley State Park (PVSP) (1) is a major state park in the
Baltimore area that Baltimore mappers (myself included) spent a lot of time
mapping. One issue I have with the current multipolygon is how to better
show map users the officially "named" areas.

PVSP consists of several nine or so areas (2) spread out over 30 miles of
the Patapsco River valley. Some of the parts are contiguous, others not.

What is a proper *strategy for adding these named parts to the map* such
that the relation remains? Perhaps a super-relation for the whole park,
with each smaller part as a sub relation/way?

Ultimately I'd like to see the areas rendered on the popular renderers,
since locals refer to the areas by their area name.

Best,

Elliott

Ahoj, určitě zkus Locus, umí záznam trasy i bodů s bohatým nastavením,
export do gpx i na osm. Můžeš používat hromadu offline i online mapových
podkladů. Samozřejmě není problém ani import gpx a hromada dalších funkcí.

Minimálně to, abych mohl zapnout
další import do OSM.org. Zmíněná app toto umí (vč. exportu do GPX), následný

Co všechno bych si představoval, že by to mohlo umět? Více mapových

lese jen velký zelený flek a s ortofoto). Super by byl přímý export do OSM.

[OSM-talk] How to extract the 12M maritime borders using osmosis?

2016-03-01 Per discussione Egil Möller
Hi!

I'm working for a project that aims to measure IUU (illegal, unregulated
and unregistered) fishing (globalfishingwatch.org). For this I'd like to
be able to classify vessel track points as withing various areas, e.g.
MPAs, economic zones and national waters, of which OSM contains the last
one.

I'm trying to extract this dataset and import it into a PostGIS instance
for further processing. According to
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:boundary%3Dmaritime#Territorial_sea_.2812.C2.A0nm_zone.29
the borders should have these attributes

boundary=administrative since so many had a problem with grouping it
together with maritime borders
maritime=yes to state that this is a maritime border, so it can be
rendered correctly/different from land borders
admin_level=2 since it is a national boundary
border_type=territorial to distinguish it from borders on land

I tried extracting these borders using

osmosis/bin/osmosis -v \
  --read-pbf-fast file=planet-latest.osm.pbf \
  --tf reject-relations \
  --tf reject-nodes \
  --tf accept-ways boundary=administrative maritime=yes
admin_level=2 border_type=territorial \
  --write-xml file=12M.osm

I then imported this into PostGIS using

osmosis/bin/osmosis -v --read-xml file=12M.osm.bz2
--write-pgsimp-dump directory=12M

and the SQL script osmosis/script/pgsimple_load_0.6.sql.

Now to the problem:

  * I see a bunch of nodes all over the place, some even inland:
http://cdb.io/1QjDRGN
  * I see only 40 ways with nodes, all somewhere on the border of Iran:
http://cdb.io/1QjE2Sq

I tried the following query to find the number of ways with nodes:

https://github.com/openstreetmap/osm2pgsql/blob/master/COPYING

[Talk-GB] MapRoulette challenge for schools

2016-03-01 Per discussione Rob Nickerson
Hi all,

We have a maproulette challenge for UK schools!! Thanks go to Martijn for
setting this up.

We’re live:
http://maproulette.org/#t=ukschools/6d5899d6-facc-4460-b152-6e0ac68188bb

It focuses on the postcode areas that are least mapped including Wales and
NI.

Notes:
* Pan around the map to find the school (which may not be exactly where the
point shows).
* ysgol is welsh for school. You may want to use language specific name
tags.

Happy mapping,
Rob

My understanding of the terms and conditions for uploading data is you have
to give permission for OSM to change the license from ODBl. so yes its
ODBl. at the moment but maybe something else in the future.

Re: [OSM-ja] SotM Japan 2016,

2016-03-01 Per discussione ISHIKAWA Takayuki

  https://openstreetmap.jp/node/773

[Talk-de] Lizenz für Programme und Code

2016-03-01 Per discussione Markus
Liebe Entwickler,

GPL-2: JOSM, OSM-Website, Mkgmap, Mediawiki
GPL-3: Membrane
AGPL:
LGPL:
MIT: Lua, Debian
2-BSD: OpenLayers
3-BSD:

Was verwendest Du? wieso?

Mit herzlichem Gruss,
Markus

Re: [OSM-talk] SotM 2016 Accomodation

On 01.03.2016 08:04, Jochen Topf wrote:

There is only a single hotel listed when I click through there, the "Motel One".
Price for a single room is 93 EUR. hrs.de offers the same hotel for 79 EUR.
Even if you add the extra breakfast (9.50) that's still cheaper.

When I checked it out three days ago I believe it was 3 nights for 186,
including breakfast and tax. Maybe it did not display it correctly on a
smartphone. Or the budget rooms are already gone.
That price was quite nice compared to hrs, but unfortunately I did not
book as I wanted to do this on the PC and not via smartphone.

Have now a reservation for "Maxhotel". Similar area, roughly 30 minutes
to the venue by public transport. No breakfast but reviews on hrs look
fine. 3 nights for 147 EUR.

Re: [OSM-talk] SotM 2016 Accomodation

2016-03-01 Per discussione Rob Nickerson
That price is for weekend only. If guests also want to stay Thursday
evening then the price you found is higher than 79.

Also beware any city taxes and breakfast - 79+9.50+4.50=93!! Thus we are
equal cheapest or cheaper depending on which days you decide to stay.

I also checked a bunch of UK booking sites and found nothing cheaper once
breakfast and taxes had been added.

The prices we have are fixed whereas booking sites trend up as availability
falls.
