Audio enhancements is by nature going to slow down any computer whether it has a screen-reader on it or not. This is because every audio event is being intercepted and processed before it is output. It's simply much more noticeable with a screen-reader because we have a constant stream of speech as compared to the occasional little bleeps and bloops and dings and dongs the sighted user has. Therefore every speech event is delayed for that processing, which creates a bottleneck in data flow. Any system is only as good as its weakest link. Audio enhancement is nothing more than an attempt to compensate for the 3 dollar speakers in tablets, laptops, and those that come with desktops or in monitors.
