9 Incorrect comparision.

It's a perfect analogy. If I built a shoddy house people would lose
confidence in my ability to build houses and buy them from elsewhere. If
you release a shoddy software program to the public full of bugs people
will lose confidence in you and go buy Eudora or continue with Outlook
 Express.

I'm not talking from my point of view, I signed up voluntarily to test
shoddy software as did everyone on this list and I expect it to be full of
holes. I also expect my time and opinion to have a certain amount of value
and not be totally ignored. Many people on here have reported what for
them are show stopper glitches, a great many of which have been ignored
and never fixed even though they are long standing issues.

9 I think only 5-10 users from this list can make real conclusions about
9 team members reputation.

I'm not trying to make any conclusions about reputations, I'm just
suggesting ways you can save or improve them.

Hi TBBETA

I previously reported a memory leak in RC1 and logged it as
https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4531, yet have received only 1
confirmation in Bugtrack. I assume the RIT developers assign priority for
fixes based on Bugtrack confirmations / requests etc, so if you have
experienced this problem, please can you confirm it in bugtrack.

Re[2]: The Bat! 3.5 Return RC1 is now available

2005-05-04 Thread Alto Speckhardt
Hi MAU,

M Calm down bit.

Yes. Sorry, I was getting a little steamed about 9Val's latest comment
on priority and non-priority. It is a little less than amusing to
fight daily with a malfunctioning program for three years and then
being assigned non-priority out of hand.

M How many e-mail clients are there available in the
M market? Why choose The Bat!?

When I chose it, there were no alternatives. In the meantime, there
have arisen some, but it takes something to make me change from a
accustomed environment to a new one, especially if I had to go through
the registration circle again with the new solution.

We may be at that point, though. It is not long ago I had been able to
recommend TheBat universally. That was a time when I thought that
malfunctions (to call them bugs would be a gross understatement) would
be worked on. Instead the ones responsible spend their time painting
new colours on the buttons! Incredible! :-((

Sorry, steam rising again.

M No software of this kind will ever satisfy
M every user 100%.

I'll grant that for e.g. TheBat not being able to use standard LF/CR
handling in the editor. It hurts me every day, but if this is just
TheBat's way I can't say much against it.

But on other issues this doesn't work. TheBat is sold as IMAP-capable.
Still, IMAP doesn't work. This is not something to be liked or not, it
is a serious malfunction. If we were talking about cars the government
would withdraw RIT's license for selling this vehicle. It's only the
software business where engineers still think they can get away with a
product where 51% of the features are working in some way.

M If your % of satisfaction with TB is as low as it seems from your
M message, why suffer? Go find another one.

I am at that point. Up until the last few days I could not bring
myself to believe that the disinterested neglegence RIT exhibits
really stems from facts. I thought they were busy working in the
meantime instead of writing messages. Apparently, this is not the
case. They don't even pretend to be. It's at least honest, but they
still won't score a cookie for it.

M Let's be reasonable. We are talking about a magnificent and quite
M complex piece of software (and therefore with bugs) [...]

I'm not challenging that. I'm a programmer myself, and rationally I
understand the reason that there always will be bugs. But when I
market a program, I react to people's needs, concerns and suggestions.
I do not develop in a direction that is neither needed nor wanted and
leave my customers hanging out on the lim in the meantime. I
especially don't just re-lable an alpha version that has not fixed any
bugs but, on the contrary, introduced a bucket full of new ones as a
release version.

M If after purchasing and using it for some time (years in your case,
M I think) someone finds his/her % of satisfaction is low, why
M suffer? Look for another one, buy it and use it happily.

You're absolutly right. I will have to go that path.

It is difficult for me though, because not only have I myself used
TheBat for quite a while but recommended it to friends and clients,
some of whom have themselves bought licenses. It's not nice to go to
them and admit that I seriously misjudged the fitness of the authors
of the program and that I'm sorry, but they should better use
something else as well. This is not something you enjoy. Because, see
- I DO care for the users I service, private or commercial. My mistake
was to apply that standard to RIT, too.

Agreed. I dumped Agent in favor of Dialog as Agent v2 seemed to be
vaporware. The trash folder thing was the last straw. I lived with
Agent for years using it for email, too until I found TB v1.5 so to
me, there is a definite limit to how long one can stand still and not
get clobbered by the competition.

Hello Alexander,

Alexander Kunz wrote (in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]):

Hmm. and from what build we can get it? RC2?
Oh no, please not, please not, please not,
Whats the problem, if its already there and it already works?

Does it work? Has it a bug? Who knows - never tested!

 Just because someone says

Someone? Sorry but /everybody/ knows, that you'll never add a feature in a
RC. If you do so, you should through away terms like beta, RC, Final ...
otherwise you make yourself ridiculous.

add a new feature right NOW when we have the chance...

No, don't so. Don confuse users with that. You could add it in a beta,
but now, we're in RC stage and there, no single feature should be added!

I'd rather not wait another year for it! :-)

Next beta cycle won't start in one year, I guess.

In the message pane? Where do you double click? I can click where I want,
 but no blank screen opens.

Three pane window, folders, messages and the bottom full width one is
where I normally read the contents of the message (pre view pane).
Double clicking the message SHOULD open it in a full viewing window, but
with certain view modes it opens the pane, but with the message No
Message Loaded shown. With No View Mode set as the view mode for a
folder it works fine, at least 2 other view modes and the message is not
displayed with a double click. Basically one view mode that causes the
problem is show:

Created, From, Subject, Attachments and Parking all ticked and Sort by
Created in Ascending Order, with Expand All Threads ticked too. I am
sure it's View Mode specific.

Same here, Windows did shut down but I would not say TB did shut down
_properly_. Why? It did shut down too fast and I didn't see it empty my

Yahoo again! Tony Boom thought I didn't notice his slip in mentioning
Yahoo, that serves TBOT, in connection with TBBETA. But I did, and
this, too! scnr :gdr:

TBBETA, which comes down, I notice, from something called thrall,
has no connection with Yahoo.

Factually speaking, for the last several days my messages on the
TBBETA list have been arriving from Comcast.net out of the order of
their creation/sending.

For instance, 9Val's RC2 announcement was well behind 6 other messages
commenting on it and on how RC2 was performing.

I don't think this is TB!'s problem or the host's problem--I think it
is just the way of the Web.

I had felt so pampered, until just lately, that the TB! lists'
messages arrived without messed-up chronology. But TBOT has given me a
good grounding in living with this sort of thing.

Same here, Windows did shut down but I would not say TB did shut down

This is a long standing issue. A few years ago, TB! shut down properly
under such circumstances, but that behaviour changed a long time ago. I
don't remember when, but I am certain it was not during this year. I
strongly believe, although I am not certain, that it was before 2004 as
well.

I've been on my way to report this several times, but never got around
to it. Partially because this behaviour suites my personal needs, I
don't want TB! to purge and compress if someone else shuts down my
computer while TB! is running, but I suppose it is not intended
behaviour so I suppose it should be fixed.

and, what is worse, it did not save the last changes I had done to the
UI (i.e. folder tree column widths)

That makes a strong case for fixing this issue. I guess I'll have to
live with my folders occasionally being compressed when not intended to,
it's not important enough to accept the risk of loosing modified
settings.

Still the same problem with RC2

RC2 - Search AVs Gone, Print from Continue

2005-05-04 Thread Richard Newman
Hello Batpeople,

The two cascading AVs when entering search have disappeared with RC2.
However, I am still getting an AV if I tray to print a message found
via search.

In RC1 and RC2 the printing AV seems to be a consistent for
the bat.exe and read address. The program hangs with the AV. The work
around has been to exit the Bat, go back to the selected message and
print directly from the message pane.

Yes, its main window was closed. But here (using W2K) the application
errors kept on coming and TB was still listed in Task Manager. I guess
your XP killed TB all by itself.

Sometimes I think, MS was quite busy in some houseworks. It is sometimes
more stable here than W2k -despite all the games my son installed on another
bootable partition of my HDD, that OS is a good thing.
This evening I get two sober-attached mails an hour and this is sobering
me up again :-\ Well, it is as it is.

All that's left here from aborted task TB is an icon in systray which
will disappear when my mouse hovers over it. No exe-rest in TM here.

That is the way it should be, you are right doing so. I guess you know
where your shirts are stored and your socks, too. You are a rare
exception, I suppose. At least according to my experiences.

It nevertheless can happen in a regular household that you haven' got
the time to be as neat as usual on exiting your PC. You maybe have to
react on things around you before they get probably worse or it is too
late. That's family life! So I would greatly welcome TB being capable
mastering such inadequate handlings which occur from time to time.

2005-05-04 Thread Alto Speckhardt
Hi MAU,

M What do you actually mean by not being able to use standard LF/CR
M handling in the editor?

With Auto Format On you can't make a paragraph (by pressing Return)
without inserting an empty line after it. If you try it the next line
is drawn back to append the previous one - as it should not be.

If you disable Auto Format then no formating is done to one
paragraph in its own. Yo can have the first line only half full with
no Return behind it, but now the next line is not drawn back - as it
very well should be.

I've inquired about this issue years ago but have not even gotten so
much as a reply. (Same as with the other bug reports I submitted over
the years, BTW.)

Thats one hell of an arguable function, anyway. For example is something

only if it is typed *like* *this* - and what with *this*? (a question mark
or whatever directly following) ... either way it'll be done, it won't

Someone? Sorry but /everybody/ knows, that you'll never add a feature in a

Uhmm... regarding the past releases of the initial v3 and following
versions... I'll better leave that uncommented. :-}

add a new feature right NOW when we have the chance...

No, don't so. Don confuse users with that. You could add it in a beta,
but now, we're in RC stage and there, no single feature should be added!

As I already wrote, I am of a different opinion, so we're even. :-)

Mulberry is better than it.

The RC1 works in a way, but it's lurchy. Messages and folders suddenly
will not load on the first attempt. Autofiltering again works
sporadically. So despite the fixing of a few of the limitations that
existed in v3.0.9.18, I don't feel inclined to use it.

I just have to continue waiting. My problem is that I've experienced
better and can't come back to functionality and smoothness that is
mediocre at best. I'm really unhappy for those who find it completely
unusable. My experience isn't that bad by a country mile, but there's a
lot of room for improvement.

I can now patiently wait since I'm quite comfortable with using an

Thats why I'm not using auto-format but press ALT-L (if need by, like when

works no matter where the cursor is placed in the paragraph.
