Hello Curtis, A reminder of what Curtis typed on: Sunday, October 02, 2005 at 08:25:56 GMT -0500 Are you referring here to TB! or Mulberry? C TB! of course. :) The problems I still have with IMAP are: 1) Filtering still only works on the first level. In other words if I have a filter that sets the color for TB beta as red and then sets it to green if it is to or from me it will temporarily set it to green and then set it back to red. 2) Every now and then when I select a message in an IMAP folder everything freezes and you can't do anything until it unfreezes. I have tried to select the CC to see what is happening, but it will not restore either. I guess I need to have the CC always on top to see what is happening. 3) The counts that show are odd and inconsistent. Sometimes the count will get marked as read after reading the last message and then get marked as unread and it takes a while to disappear. Sometimes counts seem to update for no reason and add different numbers that flash on the screen and then change back again. Otherwise it does seem to be much more stable. One other thing, I did try to use the non-local outbox for a while. It seemed to be working OK, but when I went to send some big attachments, 5 meg plus, everything really slowed down, with no progress shown etc. I assume the files are uploaded to the IMAP server and then sent to the recipient. This seems like a real waste of resources and is very slow. -- Best regards, Stuartmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Using The Bat! v3.61.09 Echo (Beta) On Windows XP 5.1 Build #2600 Current beta is 3.61.09 (Echo) | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

For instance, for TBBETA: Filter one - Header contains 'reply-to:[EMAIL PROTECTED]' AND Header does not match 'in-reply-to:[EMAIL PROTECTED]' This prevents filtering of messages that are replies to yours so that they may be filtered by the next filter which does a match like: Filter two - Header contains 'reply-to:[EMAIL PROTECTED]' AND Header match 'in-reply-to:[EMAIL PROTECTED]' This will avoid the colour group being set by one filter and then reset by another. Only one colour group setting will be applied and it sticks. :) I wouldn't even class it as a work around since you still use two filters. Work arounds usually imply an approach that isn't smooth and even inconvenient. This is the same set and forget. I didn't even try it your way since I didn't see the point in having the filters setting colour groups back and forth if I could avoid it. I agree that the problem you have is based on buggy behaviour, but it's easily circumvented and hence a minor problem. I confirm this, but for me this is only cosmetic and considering from where I came with TB! IMAP, I don't mind it as such. Otherwise it does seem to be much more stable. IMAP Bugs Sales Opportunity
I am back to trying TB's IMAP now that Mulberry is toast. Incidentally, shouldn't the business folks at Ritlabs recognize that there are a bunch of potential new customers in the market, given Mulberry's demise, and a BIG FIRM commitment to fast errorless IMAP by Ritlabs would be a good strategy to get those folks money? Following were the troubles I had in the first half hour using TB! I am using Fastmail's servers, I have two accounts with them, one for business and one for personal. I have fast connections and have folders set to FULL syncro. 1. The last time I tried TB, on Fastmail's server I had shared folder in one account so I would not have to log into both. Today, I could not get those folders removed from either (manage or read) list until I unsubscribed from each and everyone of them. This is despite the fact that the server was reporting the folders did not exist. 2. I have messages marked read in 0 seconds (instantly I guess). This does not work sometimes. The folder will be bold as if there is a new message, but none of them are new. I have to switch away from the folder and switch back. Not a deal breaker, but annoying. 3. I log into my work account from two machines. I have both machines set up to do a full synchronization so I do not have to wait to read mail. When I work on one machine, delete and read mail, then log out and switch back to the other machine and do a purge and compress, the folder shows up as broken. Again, not a deal breaker, but annoying. 4. The manage folders list is clumsy. I typically want to change a bunch of folder to the same settings. I am using Fastmail's servers, I have two accounts with them, one for business and one for personal. I have fast connections and have folders set to FULL syncro. I suggest setting the folders to not synchronise and have TB! periodically refresh folders via the IMAP account fine tune option. Full synchro is an option that bogs down the connection, even though it's fast. The thing is that if you have a fast connection then the wait time for messages to load is really small. So you don't really have to wait to read mail and even moreso you have much less problems with TB! lagging with folder flag updates because it's so busy doing full syncing on other folders. Mulberry doesn't offer full synching as an option, not unless you work in disconnect mode and do a full sync prior to disconnecting. Mulberry is hell on wheels even then. 1. Now, perhaps this is nit picking, but making IMAP fast and stable is a higher priority to me than fancy new features. Let's look at how Mulberry deals with this situation vs. TB!. When I open an account for the first time using Mulberry, Mulberry does a message count and basic flag check for each folder. So the list of subscribed folders appear with the number of read/unread messages in each. It stops there. I then open a folder in Mulberry and it loads just enough headers to fill the message list. I then select one, of the messages and it retrieves the body. It retrieves each message body as I select them. How does TB! do it for me? I open the account and like Mulberry, TB! loads the subscribed folders and then go through and displays the number of read/unread messages. It then goes ahead and does a basic header check for all messages in all folders. I then select a folder and TB! retrieves the entire header list for the folder. This will take longer than Mulberry of course, and will depend on the the number of messages in the folder. ThunderBird does the same thing, BTW. When TB! is finished, I then select a message and it retrieves the body. Nice and quickly. How does TB! do it for you? You open the account and TB! proceeds to synchronise 500MB worth of messages, thanks to your full sync option enabled for all folders. Sit back and relax, since that's going to take a long time. :) You're lucky if you get to load a single message. If you try something similar with Mulberry, you can't even edit a message since you're locked out of user input. So to sum it up, TB! has IMAP setup options that if inappropriately abused, leads to grief and problems. Full synching allows reading of messages even though you may have suddenly lost your connection or if you plan to continue reading when you're offline. However, if you choose to have it enabled for all folders and at all times, especially if your folders are large, be prepared for waiting and a lot of lags between commands and their being carried out on

You are probably right, but doing full syncs is a feature, so you will have to admit it is broken and needs fixing, no? No. It will not work well the way you're using it. I now see why Mulberry never really offered such functionality as a default setting. Mulberry offers something similar, i.e., the option to download the first x number of headers before prompting. This is for when using threaded or other special sorting views with an IMAP server that doesn't thread server side. I made the mistake you made when using Mulberry with MDaemon. I insisted on Mulberry getting all the headers so I could thread messages without hassle. As a result, I thought Mulberry was major crap as it would lock me out while it busily retrieved the TBBETA message list. Now, you're asking TB! not only to get the headers, but the message bodies as well without bogging down the connection? I wish you luck waiting for them to optimize such a setup and making it work better. In fact, they've already given their advice for that problem and it eclipses mine, i.e., do not full sync all folders since it will bog down the connection. Save the full sync setting for only those special folders you'll need to browse while off-line. It's a useful option for a dial-up user or someone who pays for broadband by the minute or someone who expects to be working with the folder while disconnected. This would work, but I am in the commercial real estate business and people frequently e-mail me 5MB+ files with information on various deals. Downloading a 5MB+ file is slow on my fastest connections. I will likely use your suggestion as a work around, but it is a bug and a bad one if you ask me. Indeed. If you're reluctant to not sync, then use an option like syncing only message bodies. This will prevent the retrieval of those large attachments while trying to do other things with your bandwidth. Yikes, I hope you are wrong here, I have enought stuff to worry about. Another possible problem is the full sync create a database locally that is changed on the server (e.g. some message exist locally that were deleted off the server with the other machine) and that difference is interpreted as broken so TB! fixes it. Here. If I delete messages at another location and then run TB! here, it simply updates the message list, removing the deleted messages. So to sum it up, TB! has IMAP setup options that if inappropriately abused, leads to grief and problems. I would like to disagree here. I think the full sync needs fixing, not elimination. I believe the brains at Ritlabs could make it work well if they wanted to. Perhaps. But it makes me wonder why other clients fail to. They don't even offer the option, and then we wonder why they work better. The usual comment is that they just work. Well, TB! will get very close to 'just working' if you make it work like other clients do. Don't bog down the connection with huge requests from it like sync'ing all folders and then complain when nothing is happening. It can be so much better. A good IMAP experience involves relinquishing some of what we're accustomed to with POP. It relies on being connected to the server to work best. Mulberry offered a disconnect mode, but you'd have to manually sync folders prior to disconnecting. Sync'ing everything, is not unlike opening your browser, and giving it 500 web pages to load. You select one of the pages and are now wondering why it's taking so long to load. You then blame bugginess on why the page you want to see is taking long to load. Thank you for your time on this discussion. I hope Ritlabs recognizes the opportunity of fixing IMAP. There's fixing to do. If other users had IMAP working as well as I have it now, they'd be very happy. I'm not putting up with crap here. It's working well. It's just for it to be reliably reproducible. Hello Curtis, There's fixing to do. If other users had IMAP working as well as I have it now, they'd be very happy. I'm not putting up with crap here. It's working well. It's just for it to be reliably reproducible. One thing is for sure, is that if I try your methods, I'd be in misery. :) Thank you for your thoughts. I hope your conclusion (conclusion: it is basically impossible to make a client that can adequately handle full syncro) is wrong and I hereby issue a challenge to Ritlabs to prove you wrong ;) . Hello Curtis, A reminder of what Curtis typed on: Sunday, October 02, 2005 at 16:15:19 GMT -0500 C I have all folders set to not synchronise. C I have the IMAP fine tune options: refresh folders every 2 minutes. This is what confuses me. What is the difference between refresh folders and synchronize. What is actually happening. And what do you have under Options/Mail Checking/Synchronize Folders Every X Minutes. C In the account properties I also have under 'Mail Management' all the C options for 'Automatically connect to Server' checked. Here also, once the IMAP connection is made, it never lets it go for any reason, unless you have Disconnect after x set, and that does not appear to be working properly, or at least it wasn't. -- Best regards, Stuartmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Using The Bat! v3.61.09 Echo (Beta) On Windows XP 5.1 Build #2600 Current beta is 3.61.09 (Echo) | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/

I agree that ALL syncro options should be disabled since they do not work. It is better to not have a feature than have one that does not work, no? Thunderbird seems to have the Syncro stuff working much better than all other clients. They are open source, can't Ritlabs just copy and paste the code? I set all my settings to your suggestions, then did a restart, then did a folder maintenance with all options on all folders. This fixed 34 folders. I then found my local TBat mail folders were 7.2GB, yes Gigabytes. I deleted all the BIN, TBI, and TBB files (Ritlabs, this is a bug, I should not have to do this, please fix this) and now everything seems reasonable. You were also correct about speed. Even though the message are not local, things are surprisingly fast. I have one more question for you. The outbox is local. By this do you mean you have NO check next to Outbox? This is another bug. How the F*^ is a new user supposed to know to do that. I recommend against The Bat! as an IMAP client for new users until Ritlabs gets it working better. I best stop. However, there are those who wish for that flexibility and may well use it to their advantage. Thunderbird seems to have the Syncro stuff working much better than all other clients. They are open source, can't Ritlabs just copy and paste the code? Funnily, I started using TB! IMAP the way you currently used it. I had the problems you did. I switched to ThunderBird in frustration and watched how it did things. I wondered if I could make things work in a similar way in TB!... and here I am after discovering that my current settings closely mimics the way ThunderBird works. :) No wonder TB! works much better this way. I set all my settings to your suggestions, then did a restart, then did a folder maintenance with all options on all folders. This fixed 34 folders. I deleted all the BIN, TBI, and TBB files (Ritlabs, this is a bug, I should not have to do this, please fix this) and now everything seems reasonable. .. as they will likely continue to be. ThunderBird has one ability over TB!. I've noted that on selecting a folder for browsing, ThunderBird will go ahead and retrieve other new message bodies as you read. It will not necessarily wait for you to select a message. However, your requests for message bodies takes a clear priority over the bodies that it's retrieving for you in the background. TB!'s option to save a connection for retrieving requested message bodies ... if that worked well, we'd be a lot better off for it. You were also correct about speed. This is another bug. How the F*^ is a new user supposed to know to do that. :) I understand the frustration. I wonder the same thing myself. One of my current frustrations with IMAP has nothing to do with how well I have it working, but how easy it is to happen upon ways of making it work badly. This needs to be sorted out. Most of your post has been responded to. I think there are few things to keep in mind. 1. Mulberry isn't toast. At least, not yet. It is still a very robust IMAP client. Until such time that new functionality (e.g. security) renders it useless, it will continued to be utilized by many, including myself. 2. Unlike Mulberry that was built from the ground-up with IMAP in mind, TB added IMAP functionality to what basically was and has been a POP client. Consequently, the IMAP functionality of TB has always been less than robust (I am trying to be nice), IMO. The only way I think TB is going to get good IMAP is if all of the developers are forced to work 100% on IMAP. I would be curious to know how many are now. It's interesting (frustrating's a better word perhaps) that after Ritlabs promised to focus on making IMAP work a release or two back NONE of the recent betas or full releases has even mentioned IMAP. Instead, we're treated to coloured tab thingies and other stuff which is peripheral to the core programme. My guess is that they don't have the knowledge or resources to resolve the outstanding issues. I use Mulberry as my main mailer and, unless IMAP standards change over the next year or two, I'll continue to use it but it would be tremendous if Ritlabs managed to get hold of the code and produce a TB IMAP version. Unless that happens, I fear that TB will continue to frustrate in this area. -- Regards, Clive Taylor TheBat!:3.60.01 Windows XP: Service Pack 2 Current beta is 3.61.09 (Echo) | 'Using TBBETA' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html IMPORTANT: To register as a Beta tester, use this link first - http://www.ritlabs.com/en/partners/testers/
