Re: 5.3.8.5 - IMAP incoming filtering still broken - Fixed after reinstall

2013-03-20 Thread Tony Hoare
I was just contemplating the nuclear option but now I'm not so sure.
Well I did it. A complete reinstall. What a nightmare only made
slightly better because I created a script to switch between the old
and new installations by copying the program and mail folders and
reloading the registry for each installation.

It only take you so far and there is still a massive amount to do
manually.

Filters can be copied and pasted via Notepad so are relatively
straightforward.

I didn't have any solution for:

1) Creating a $JUNK$ folder at the account level. Many junk filters
referred to this.

2) Virtual folders all need to be recreated. Some had quite complex
filters.

3) All Tags are lost

4) All Colour groups are lost

5) Recreating the templates at the various account and folder levels
is painful. You need to remember which folder have their own templates
for New, Reply and Forward.

6) Don't import your old address book. Just copy the old address book.

It's amazing how customization has been done since v1.62. I'm sure
there's a lot more to discover over the next few days and weeks.

The bottom line is that incoming IMAP filtering now works again. I
wish I felt more pleased about it.

Thanks for the tip. I was able to get the quick templates back as they
are in a separate file.

I believed the .FLB is where most of the configuration is held for the
account - and so it turns out. I copied in the old .FLB and my virtual
folders reappeared but FILTERS STOPPED WORKING. Replaced it with the
new version and the filters started working again.

PluginAPI to access data? Now that's interesting. I thought there's
only API to implement AV and spam checks.

How is it to be accessed? TBPInterface.pas from
http://www.ritlabs.com/download/files3/the_bat/api/thebat_plugin_api.zip
seems to declare a COM-based interface but I don't see any CLSIDs or
relevant registrations in registry.

IMAP filters have been broken for 2-3 years. I think Ritlabs have given up. I
have
decided that I will not upgrade unless this is fixed. Nobody from Ritlabs have
contacted any on the people on this list with issues to try an fix the problem.

Either they have decided that it's a bad business decision to fix it - or they
are
simply unable to. I have been using TB since some 1.x (maybe 2.x) version but
this
inability to meet my needs (and their quality control) make any coming version
not
interesting for me.

It is depressing. They were working fine at one point until a recent
beta. That beta did something permanent so that even going back quite
a number of versions the filters are permanently broken.

Apparently it doesn't rate as highly as dates failing before 1601. :-(

On the plus side, my backup procedure is 10x better now that I'm using
rsync so that I have a snapshot twice a day.

There's little they can do without being able to reproduce the problem.
Since only a few people w/o any specific setup experience this, it's
most probably a DB corruption issue.
(on the other hand, the fact that we can't diagnose/fix this ourselves
comes from the closeness of their DB format)

I suggest you to send them your base and/or recreate it from scratch.
Filters can be exported, a backup/wipe/restore might do the

I highly doubt this is a database corruption issue - simply because I
experienced it from day 1 of a new install on a new machine - having not used
TB! for about 5 years.

Its also intermittent, i.e. some a few messages filter correctly from this
group into my folder - other days (like today) None of them filtered, so I had
to hit re-filter on the inbox - and Lo - everything moved as expected.

TB! has what software developers call a bad smell about in - with random
failures and recurrent problems on issues which should have been resolved years
ago,
I strongly suspect it could do with a complete re-write!
