For reasons too complicated to explain, I'd like to count the number
of messages that I've got selected (100+ so counting by hand is a bit
hit and miss, not to mention time consuming).
Obviously there's no direct way to do it, but can anyone think of some
nice lateral solution?

When you select several messages, you can hover over the message list
and read the hint...

The %- macro is documented in the help file, though it's easy to
overlook as it's listed as a dash and it's the first macro in the
alphabetical listing.
I follow up all macros that don't leave any results in the message
text with the %- macro, it makes reading a template easier as each
