Did you try address auto-view? Ctrl-Shift-O.

Well, that is better than the Kludges, so thank you. But it is still
not as convenient as it could be. Now if we could dock that toolbar
on the window somewhere, that might do the trick, but you can not
isolate what field the address was in. But that's relatively minor.

I had almost forgotten about that. Not bad in truth but
there's no way to easily add an address to the address book using it
is there?

The other thing is that again I have to make an appeal for
some consistency in functionality here!! If I have the message
autoview/preview window open, select a message which is displayed, and
then hit Ctrl+Shift+O, the message autoview window comes up with the
address information displayed for the message. But I don't use the
message autoview/preview window. Now if I double click on a message
and display the message body in a view folder window and then hit
Ctrl+Shift+O, an empty address autoview window appears. It's only when
I navigate to the next message that the addresses are displayed in
address autoview. A tad annoying . when something works with
message previewing and then doesn't work when you *really* open the
message. :(

Message autoview window (was Re: If I was creative there would be a good subject here)

2000-02-04 Thread Marck D. Pearlstone

Hi Allie,

On 04 February 2000 at 04:36:43 GMT -0500 (which was 09:36 where I
live) [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote and made these points:

I see that, but OTOH use the address auto-view a bit differently. I
keep it open constantly while reviewing mail in my virtual mail folder
... you know, the one behind the ticker ;-). Why? Because following
Leif's stroke of brilliance in setting up the rogues gallery site, I
now have entries with photos for many members of the list (as well as
for my personal contacts). This gives e-mail a staggeringly different
feel in real time. It's like a static video-phone conversation. I love
it!

This has diverted the topic a bit.

Back on topic - yes, there is a usability hole as you have described.
IMHO, a quick Ctrl-Shift-K; grab the bit you want; Ctrl-Shift-K; carry
on; does mean that an address grabbing facility isn't *missing*, just
not as easily accessible as it could be.

Yes - very much so - with one minor correction to the scenario. The
ticker is unimportant to me as a screen entity. With 50+ mails
arriving every couple of hours, what the ticker has to say to me is
just about irrelevant. I have it set up as a 3cm rectangle toward the

access the new mail virtual folder behind it and get on with the real

AM I don't mind doing that at all and that's what I've been

It would be nice if that address autoview window was made
dockable like the quick search applet and toolbars. There's space on
the main window to accomodate it if you one doesn't use the preview
pane or have the preview pane full width. ;) If it's docked into the
main window, it wouldn't have to be fighting for it's own screen real
estate, staying on top of everything in site (it's only useful when
always on top). Just a thought. Don't really know how practical it is.

Save the rogue image to disk. Add the persons address book to

book entry properties for the person. Hit the change button under
where the photo should be and navigate to the photo. Whenever you have
a message from that person open and you open the address autoview

Re: If I was creative there would be a good subject here

2000-02-04 Thread Alexander V. Kiselev

Hi there!

On 3 Feb 00, at 23:04, Paula Ford wrote
about "Re: If I was creative there would be...":

OK, you are now unto something. :) Both Agent and X-News have a
feature that I think would provide you with your solution. They both
allow you to view, in the body of your messages, aspects of the
Kludges that may interest the user...

Pegasus allows this, too (I've sent a JPG of how it works a couple of days
ago...), and it's configurable (via a resource compiler;-)), too... But *I*
personally prefer the way TB works. I prefer it to be displayed in a special
place rather to be a part of the message text, where I now and then need to
scroll solely to get hold of this information...

I have been thinking of making a wish request that the header
information be placed in the message body text area with a line
separator, for some time for two reasons:-

I made this feature request myself shortly after getting TB, because
most mailers I have used or tried (except GW, of course) displayed or
had an option to display to a short header at the top of the message
itself. After all the time I've used TB, I still don't like the way it
displays the header information. To me, it just takes up alot of screen
space and, in general, looks clunky, but, more important, is Januk's
point that there's no functionality to the thing.

Then, just add the functionality to the existing thing: no need to redesign it up
to the ground... Add a button or whatever to that section of the pane, where
TB puts the selected header fields, for example, that would make it possible to
work with it.

RIT added the ability to copy from the header display shortly after a round
of discussion on the TBUDL, but it's still pretty awkward. I routinely deal
with received messages that have long, complex kludges where I have to
capture an address for some purpose that can't be done through templates.

You've got regexps now;-) _Exactly_ for this, IMO

In any event, I think Januk has made a useful point that some easier way
of capturing addresses from the headers to use in email messages or add
to the address book or simply copy somewhere would be a worthwhile
 improvement.

My point, also. But this doesn't imply that the way the selected headers are
displayed must be changed to the ineffective (IMHO) way the other MUAs
work.

I am writing messages to mailing lists in what I think is plain texts.
But they come back in HTML. Not all of them, but some.

 How can this be?

This cannot be;-) TB never sends HTML, unless you manually attach HTML file
to an empty message. There might be two reasons for your messages coming
back in HTML that I can think of:

 (i) the list software is set up to do so. It's simple indeed: just replace
"text/plain" string in the headers with "text/HTML" and then enclose all the
 message body in:
 htmlpre

 /pre/html
 and that's all...

(ii) are you referring to your *own* messages when telling that they come
back in HTML? Maybe you mean, that it's the _replies_ that you get in HTML?
Then it's pretty likely to happen: there are usually some LookOut users about
 everywhere;-)

Thanks, Alexander. I checked out my subscription specs at the site,
and found that I was under "Convert to HTML". I did not set it up
myself, but...

Best regards,
 Julio

*I* can't. If it were "read-only" flag, I certainly could: I use this feature in

Re: Show from during download

Confirmed, I had not tried this feature for a while, so I just tested
it, it seems once the header is downloaded that the message is gone
from the server. I personally don't mind this, I will not download any
large messages no matter who they are from, sending large files by
mail is very inefficient and I prefer an ftp link.

But this should be a bug and a serious one... it's certainly not a
feature! TB seems to be imposing your preferences on everyone. You should
be able to download the header, and any number of lines you want with the
header (to get an idea of what the large message is about)... BUT... you
should also have the option of then either downloading or deleting the
message from the Server.

I've set my download options so that only the headers and a few lines of
text in the large messages are downloaded, but I never thought that doing
so also deleted the original message from the Server. It's interesting to
note RITLabs logic on this:

Receive header only if message size if greater than n K bytes - use this
option if you do not want to receive large messages from the account.
This may be useful when you are away from your home and want to read
only significant messages (messages of such kind are usually relatively
 short)

I don't agree with that logic... not at all.

Please RITLabs... correct this bug and turn it into a feature by allowing
a little flexibility insofar as leaving what happens to the message, up to
me. The message was addressed to me, not you, so don't _you_ decide what
happens to it.

Hi there!

Nick, this bug (yeah, this *is* a very serious bug) has been there for a long
time, and RIT labs programmers are certainly aware of what's happening
when one uses this feature. It's been pointed out as a bug on numerous
occasions, and the formal bug reports have been sent to RIT... Just wait till
they fix it, but meanwhile _do_not_ use the "do not download messages larger
then" in conjunction with the option "delete messages from the server" if you
don't like to loose some of the messages addressed to you. I understand that
this is not a workaround, but at least this will save your mail which is likely to
just perish otherwise;-(

I've set my download options so that only the headers and a few lines of
text in the large messages are downloaded, but I never thought that doing
so also deleted the original message from the Server. It's interesting to

The logic is all right, it's the code that is buggy;-)

me. The message was addressed to me, not you, so don't _you_ decide what

Actually, no other option is needed: if one *really* wants to wipe the messages
overblowing the limits off the server w/out even downloading them, one might
just use the killfilters IMHO. The message size is there in the headers...
Therefore the feature "don't d/load messages larger then" is just plain broken
and needs to be fixed, or _at_least_ explained in _full_details_ in the docu,
since it's really dangerous and the cation cannot be undone.

But believe me, it's a real eye opener, especially when some realize

Resize tracer's photo +50% width-wise and enjoy! (sorry tracer, but
you certainly look less pointy-headed that way g).
