OK, maybe I have got one of the win2k settings wrong, I have the same
problem with Opera, although IE calls up the connection dialogue OK.

IEAK = Internet Explorer Administration Kit. To get it, go to Microsoft's web
site and download it for free. However, you will have to apply for a distribution
licence to get a licence key so that you can modify IE5 installations.
Simply fill in the licence agreement that you want, and apply and you will
get a serial by way of email - A tip: just in case you are an individual user and not a
company, shove in some fictitious Business name and call yourself an
Technical Director or something. You will still then get a licence. Go for
the in house distribution licence! You will also of course require a FULL
distribution of IE5 on your hard disk which you can usually grab off of a
magazine cover disk - if you don't want to download the whole lot
(NOTE: if you copy IE5 files from a CD-ROM, install IEAK first, then copy
the files to the /download sub folder.)

You can create a full distribution of IE5 with The Bat! included and
other stuff like Irfanview. The are then installed as optional
components of IE5. Create Custom ISP Connections to autoload firewalls
and port monitors before you connect to the internet. Customize the browser
and add your own buttons to the toolbar, etc. Save your custom scripts
and then burn files to CD ;-)

Using Batch.inf is the method I use for my custom installs. You can
then merge registry files when you install your customized
installations so all the customizations you make can be added to a
custom W98 install. Save the reg keys as .reg files and include them
in your install. Creating an Optional.ini file is how you add optional
components for an install. Ms's Inf installer is how you add drivers
and other components using .inf files. Inf installer will copy all the files
listed in the .inf file to the Win98 installation folder and modify
existing batch.inf file to account for extra components. Read
Windows98 Resource Kit Online help for detailed instructions (on Win98 cd).

Re Tweak: Most of the stuff in tweak is usually used once by the end
user. You can usually easily find the settings Tweak modifies in the
registry - TweakUI can be a bit temperamental I have found. Save all
the settings you want changed to .reg files and then include them in
the install. BTW: X-Setup from www.xteq.com & TweakALL from
www.abtons-shed.com are two much better Tweakers than TweakUI and are
free for all. Both add extra applets to Control Panel and kind of make
TweakUI redundant. However, once you discover that 99% of all tweaks
are easily done manually, you can add them all to a custom Windows
install thereby eliminating unnecessary software.

CJT> I want to change the logo IN io.sys).

If Io.sys was a win32 file I could suggest what to do (cos there are
loads of ways to grab and replace resources in such files). However,
Io.sys is a dos/real mode file so I can't help I'm afraid. I never use
the 'orrible logo anyway as it slows boot up :-)

CJT> Thanks for info, and sorry for off-topic...

No problem. Hope this helps a bit.

I have found a way to do it, but it is involved a bit.
Mainly using the /batch command line parameter and a batch file with a
lot of /MAIL commands, pointing to a template, with each persons email
address.

Shame it cannot expand each member in a group, and effectively
perform a 'mail merge' on the message. Templates ALMOST do this.
Except I've got to go through all 30 manually creating new messages.

Sorry, I can't help here, but I got a question -- what is this IEAK
you mention? Do you have any experiences with customizing Windows
_install_ versions (so that the chosen elements are different than
originally; additional files are copied and registry keys added). For
example I'd like to integrate TweakUi98 to my Win98 install version...

Also, do you know if it is possible to extract and change the original
logo from io.sys (I know about logo.sys, it's just not what I want --
I want to change the logo IN io.sys).

Thanks for info, and sorry for off-topic...

I had no display on a clean install and that was really a problem I
prefer to look at again in future when it may be fixed...
I have it running on other systems and its not bad but if your
hardware and software which is needed doesnt work..
My antivirus didnt work, except obviously the MS stuff they want you
to use and my Firewalls also didnt work. Add other things I need to
run on THIS machine and its clearly very user/machine dependent.

Firstly apologies for using this MUA, I have TB! running under W2k the only
problem so far has been the dial-up. TB! will no longer connect
automatically, and the dial-up has to be invoked manually.

Best regards

Mark
