Documentation?

2004-05-20 Thread Wayne King
Does any documentation for The Bat exist anywhere? I can't find any on Ritlabs
website. There are a great many features in The Bat and not much in the way of
directions on how to use them. Tracking down how to do something from a Windows help
file is tedious and often useless. The only alternative seems to be following the
discussion lists and/or posting questions. It's hard to find time for this. I'm
still better pleased with The Bat than I was Pegasus but wish Ritlabs would provide
some documentation -- a pdf or even a text file documenting the many features would be
really helpful.

WK Certainly not Windows -- of course Windows is happy for you to

That's not what I was saying... the OS lets you select the default
browser (not just IE) and lets you create accounts that have different
user preferences. If someone decides not to use those features why
should TB! implement them internally?

Okay, there are exceptions... for example, on my system Powermarks and
Notetab Pro. But you'd expect that with a bookmark utility and general
purpose editor that's used for coding HTML etc.

Hello Marten,

I don't suppose I can do this without setting up a filter can I:

 Open folder of emails,

 highlight some or all,

 compose a quick email note,

send it to all as if individually.

I think it can be done. I am trying to adapt a couple of templates I use
but I don't have it working 100% yet. A few questions that will help me
to adapt it for your needs:

1.- When you say 'compose a quick email note' I am assuming you want to
just send this note and only the note. That is, not a reply to each of the
messages selected and quoting the message. Correct?

2.- I am also assuming you want all the messages to have the same
Subject, or do you want to keep the original Subjects of each of the
selected messages?

3.- Would you be doing this from just one specific folder or you would
want to do it from any folder?

4.- Do you use Reply templates? If so, are they Address Book templates or
Folder or Account templates?

Yes - just the same note to each address - no quoting necessary, no
attachments.

Same subject (new one) is fine.

3.- Would you be doing this from just one specific folder or you would

Preferably from any folder.

4.- Do you use Reply templates? If so, are they Address Book templates or
 Folder or Account templates?

Mainly account templates and folder templates although for TBUDL I
have had to set up an adres book template.

Sounds exciting... :-)

All read messages in Inbox gone

2004-05-20 Thread Stan Robins
This morning, when I opened The Bat, all the Read messages in the
Inbox were gone. I did a Search for known senders and it did not find
any missing messages.

Rebuilding the Inbox message for that account didn't make any
difference.

Some important items have apparently been lost.

I have been noticing for a week or so that certain groups of messages
would disappear from the Inbox, and I have meant to ask about this on
the list. Losing all the Read messages in a mailbox has prompted me to
action.

I haven't made any changes to my machine or the way I use The Bat!, or
added any software involved with email.

I use some filters, but to my knowledge, I do not have any filters
configured that could explain this. On the other hand, some sort of
major bug in the filter system might be involved.

In a seemingly related incident last week, my daughter, who is also a
Bat user reported that all the messages in her Known Inbox
disapppeared.

Whatever is happening here is obviously intolerable. I hope someone
has an explanation and remedy.

If you see a puddle forming around the base of your computer then

Just kidding. Basically a memory leak means that a program grabs
resources (like memory) and once it's done doing what it needed to do
with the resource, it fails to free it up for other things to use it.
Further, the same program that took the resource in the first place
may forget that it set aside that resource for its own use and take
another piece of the resources. If this were to continue, it would
mean that at some point in time it will have grabbed all the available
resources and things start to crash because there are no resources
left for anything to use.

Really the only way to recover from a memory leak (aside from the
programmers fixing the bug) is to first, try and close the offending
application and hope Windows recovers the resources, or two, restart
your computer if the first doesn't work.

Interesting. Does this only work in the bat?

Not yet, but it's being worked on. Hopefully it'll be up and working
reliably soon.

A Secondly after upgrading to 2.10.03 attachments can't be opened.
A When I view my imap folders using Mozilla Thunderbird (which I
A briefly thought might be better than TB! at IMAP) it can open and

I don't have that problem though I do know that the experience with
TB!'s IMAP can vary widely. Again, IMAP is being given attention and
hopefully this sort of unpredictable behaviour will be sorted out.

Re[2]: All read messages in Inbox gone

2004-05-20 Thread Stan Robins
Hello Thomas,

Thank-you for the reply.

First, hit crtl+= (or go to View / Display / All Mesages).

That (All Messages) is the setting for my Inbox. When I Display Read messages, it
just shows the few recent messages that I have read.

If that doesn't help, go to Folder / Browse Deleted Messages.

I did that already. This morning it didn't show any. Now it shows
about 5 deleted messages. All are recent. There is no rhyme or reason
to the messages displayed as deleted.

I opened the Inbox messages.tbb file with a text editor and tried to
find a few of the missing messages. They weren't there.

SR In a seemingly related incident last week, my daughter, who is also a
SR Bat user reported that all the messages in her Known Inbox
SR disapppeared.

Is the file messages.tbb still on her HD?

I think so. I did have her rebuild the index and also Browse Deleted
Messages. No luck with either.

I wonder how many have reported this problem. I suspect a massive bug
related to the filter routines.

I better start making daily backups of my mailboxes.

Spam Filtering

2004-05-20 Thread Gene Brown
A few days ago someone had a question about spam filtering problems
but it drifted off into a conversation about untrimmed replies, so I
thought I'd raise it again.

BayesIT had been working pretty well for me up until upgrading to the
current TB version with the built-in plug-in. I tried to bring it up
to speed by running through all my old junk mail as well as a
collection of good mail, but it still wasn't catching much after about
a week of operation and I was wondering what was wrong.

I finally set my score greater than box to 5 out of 100 (!), and now
things are looking up--it's catching maybe eighty percent of the spam
with no false positives. But 5 seems an awfully low number to use,
and I'm always checking for good mail showing up in my junk box. Am I
doing something wrong or is this how it works? Will I be able to
raise the score over time to give myself more peace of mind?

And just what do those choices about Average, Maximal and Minimal
really mean? I've fooled around with changing the settings but can
see no difference in performance.
