 Well I'm still persevering!

I've now transcribed 83 different regex rules over to Bayesit. I extracted
them from my copy of MailWasher.

Why all these problems and hassle if Spambayes can do all the work for you
with just a little bit of training?

Hi Dick,

I can use Mailwasher Pro VERY successfully. I'm just trying to find an
integrated solution that works.

So far it hasn't, but I like the challenge. :-)

And there's no doubt that for me the RegEx filters have improved
performance greatly.

I've no doubt that SpamBayes works very well, but it's yet another program
that has to be run alongside the multitude of other 'utilities' that seem
to clog up my taskbar on a regular basis.

So I'll give Bayesit a month and if it doesn't work after that I'll go back
to Mailwasher Pro, which does.

Hi Roman,

See my reply to Dick.

I used to use K9 with great success, but for me Mailwasher Pro is the top

It seems odd to me that some people seem to claim great things of Bayesit,
yet for others, like me, it doesn't seem to work.

Similarly great claims are made for Bayes Filter, and yet, for me, it just
doesn't work.

I agree with your comment re the lack of documentation.

I'll continue my experiment.

Help with filters please

2005-02-22 Thread Cory
Hi @ll,

Could someone please give me a hint on how to work this out?

I want to set up filtering for log messages where sender and subject
contain similar strings, and body text contains (non-) capitalized
lowercase phrases like scan dropped and Attack Dropped.
The use of [] and | isn't all that clear to me, and wildcards
combined with regular expressions enabled isn't doing the trick
either...

This set:

log-fw Sender Yes
alert|Alert Subject Yes
[?can ?ropped]|[?ttack ?ropped]
TextYes

...isn't hitting any msg,

Anyone? TIA!

I can try ... although you don't say which version you are using.

C I want to set up filtering for log messages where sender and
C subject contain similar strings, and body text contains (non-)
C capitalized lowercase phrases like scan dropped and Attack
C Dropped.

Filter text matching is case insensitive by default.

C either...

Ah - well, [] and Regex cannot be used together. And I'm not sure that
this applies in the same way to V3 filters. Sounds like you're using
v2. This is not going to make it easy since nobody can test your
filters or supply you with one.

C This set:

C log-fw Sender Yes
C alert|Alert Subject Yes
C [?can ?ropped]|[?ttack ?ropped]
C TextYes

C ...isn't hitting any msg,

That is a mess I'm afraid. You can't combine wildcards with regex as
you have done here. Since the matching is case insensitive, just put
the real characters in instead of the ? characters. V3 would eat this
for breakfast.

Try one or all of these:

(1)

 log-fw Sender Yes
 alert Subject Yes
 [scan|attack] dropped TextYes

(2)

 log-fw Sender Yes
 alert Subject Yes
 scan dropped|attack dropped TextYes

(3)

 log-fw Sender Yes
 alert Subject Yes
 scan droppedTextYes

  (+ Alternative)

 log-fw Sender Yes
 alert Subject Yes
 attack dropped TextYes

Like I say - I don't have v1/2 or the v1/2 help file to verify any of
the advice here.

Not necessarily, but it does narrow the pool from which information can be
drawn, as most people (not all, but a very large percentage) who can be bothered
being on an email list for a product are the ones who are pretty quick to adopt

As version 3 has a new filter system, potential helpers may be unable
to test their advice before posting or unable to replicate/emulate your
situation. Have you tried the list archives?

Is the option to use a hotkey selected? (always worth checking the
obvious) Any clashes of hotkey/shortcut key (check Alt-F12)?

Assuming you backed everything up before upgrading, you could try
overwriting the file containing your filters with your backup
copy. (sorry I don't know filename)

BTW, top posting will incur the wrath of the moderators.

Not at all. There are even some still around who use v2, take me for
example. But you are using an old version even in terms of v2. I don't
think I ever used 2.00 and as it was the first release it's bound to
have bugs that were fixed in the numerous later releases. So yes might
be you filters don't work because of a bug, too, who knows. I would
definitely advise you to upgrade to v2.12 and not only because of
bugs. Filters invoked by hotkeys certainly work here. If that doesn't
cure it let us have a look at your filters.
