So, I either need to amend the salutation manually or go into the
addressbook to remove the duplicate entry for Paul (it's duplicate as
the email address is always the same, just the way it appears changes
 with the various prefixes).

How can the following three email addresses be called same:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

To me they look like three distinct email addresses.

Sorry, you are right, my quoting these addresses was incorrect. The address
appears as follows:

_Paul XYZ [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Paul-XYZ [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think there was a third version but I cannot find it quickly. The
email address is the same but the way it is being presented prior to
the xxx is different (probably due to the way it is being set up in
Paul's email program and this seems to cause my little issue here.
Hope this makes it clearer

In that case just stop adding all addresses to your address book. Or
change your filter that adds those addresses so that it checks whether
the address exists in your AB before adding it.

JSL Many thanks Thomas. Your suggestion seemed *slightly* easier (simpler
JSL to my addled brain) compared to Roelof's so I tried it your way.
JSL Everything seemed to work ok except apparently the backup doesn't
JSL copy the address books. Strange.

Hm. Let me check on the new computer tomorrow.

FWIW, I don't use an addressbook in the office, just the address
history. If the history doesn't show the desired address, the seaerch
function is so fast that I don't even bother to keep an addressbook
updated. I keep message forever in the office.

At home, I do have an addressbook. I don't kow why, maybe because it's
a nice toy.

JSL I had to go back into the old machine to find and copy them
JSL separately. I then transferred them to the new machine without
JSL any problems. My wife is not as picky about how TB! operates as
JSL am I so she isn't bothered by stuff that would annoy the hell
JSL out of me. I may take Roelof's suggestion to upgrade to v4 on
JSL her machine however.

JSL In retrospect, Dan's suggestion might have worked better had I looked
JSL at it closer. In any case, she's up and running and that's all she
JSL cares about.

Right, all seems well now.

JSL I did find a problem(?) with transferring K9 over to her machine.
JSL Everything transferred ok including a separate copy of K9's large
JSL storage of emails but I never could get K9 to recognize that those
JSL emails were there. It just means that she'll have to re-educate K9
JSL all over again but since neither of us has been receiving spam to the
JSL degree we were when I installed K9, it shouldn't be a problem.

I have no idea about that. At home, I use GMX with a free server-side
spam filter, and in the (new) office, I don't receive spams yet.

JSL So, alls well that ends well. Thanks to all that helped in this
JSL endeavor.

You are welcome.

Unless I'm missing something, which is quite frequently the case, it
looks like you're trying to prevent your replies from including the
dashes or underscores in the reply salutation. If I've guessed
correctly, it looks like this is a job for a properly constructed
RegExp which would automagically trim those characters from your reply
salutation. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no knowledge on how to
construct/use RegExps but there are others on this amazing list who
do.

The only reason I can think of for why someone would include odd
characters in their name is that they might be trying to track the
origins of subsequent spam.

Hope I haven't clouded the issue any further.

Tried everything but no go. I am positive that the feature is broken
 in this version of TB!

It has to be turned on in OPTIONS / PREFERENCES / MESSAGES then
checking go to the next unread message when using smartspace etc.

I did. Both options are checked. Still no go. Everything else working
 fine, including the keyboard :-)

You are using the 4.0.24 final beta. ;-)

I do not have enough time to revert to this version 4.0.24 to try it
out, but you my consider to try one of the newer versions. 4.0.24.23
 seems to be quite usable.

I'm using the latest publicly available (i'm not part of the beta
testing). Can't find any later one on the Ritlabs website.
