ALL MAIL in my BAT InBox has disappeared (except very latest download)

2001-06-25 Thread David Robert Austen

What is the world can be going on with The Bat here in my sys?

Everything in my BAT InBox has disappeared again (except very latest
download).

Can somebody explain what is going on here? I feel my e-mail is
totally out of control . . it is as if I cannot depend on this
software any more. And I cannot succeed in downloading the latest
version of The Bat and installing it.

(It is not helpful to Browse Deleted Messages.)

Problems with new version download 1.53bis

2001-06-15 Thread David Robert Austen

From David Robert Austen
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Can anybody help?

I was very happy to see the new version 1.53bis, but installing it has
been a small disaster. I believe I had the most recent previous
version of The Bat and so I overwrote that.

FTP and HTTP version downloads both give the same result.

Can somebody suggest something?

Of course I will be happy to uninstall if necessary - assuming that
does not damage my message folders. I am now temporarily using an
older version of The Bat: 1.46d. I can I overwrite this safely with a
new version?

Here are two of the error messages I have been seeing. Bat begins to
load but only the cartoon Bat graphic appears before these show:

1. access violation at address 00650FC1

2. exception EREADError n Module TheBat.exeat 00020E57. error reading
ITree.Ident: Error creating window

I have also written to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but there have been no
responses.

Thank you in advance.

Finding and recovering lost messages; all in a range of dates have diappeared from InBox.

2001-05-19 Thread David Robert Austen

(I first asked for this help on this matter on May 15, but there was
no reply at all. Is there *anybody* there who can understand why these
messages are disappearing and where they might be going?)

Greetings,

I have discovered that every downloaded Inbox message *Created*
between from 7 May to 15 May (inclusive) is suddenly missing. Other
messages all seem to be here, still intact, in my Inbox.

(At the same time, the order of the columns (fields)in my Inbox became
somewhat rearranged.)

The only hint of trouble I saw was the warning messages that came up,
warning of The Bat's inability to locate a certain folder I created
that same morning - for filtering out some spam. Somehow that folder's
name became badly corrupted.

I also had my sys freeze once or twice while The Bat was operational;
the cause is not known.

(TBUDL messages are filtered to their own folder, and no TBUDL
messages are missing from that week-long period.)

I have done searches of Bat messages and archives here and find no
clues to this problem. Your assistance would be much appreciated.

Clues or comments?

Thank you in advance.

Your letter to Jennifer was very helpful and reminded me of a problem
I have here.

You menitoned clicking on the tree icon. Whenever I do that (for any
reason at all) The Bat freezes up. With Ctr-Alt-Del, I discover a Not
Responding warning in the Close Program dialog box.

I have learned to only create filters using the Special menu inside
a message.

I think that I have upgraded Bat once already and this problem
persists. I believe it has always been present.

Ideas anybody? Do I need to reinstall one or more files, for example?

Re: Sorting or re-ordering the folder list ?

2001-04-18 Thread David Robert Austen

Greetings,

(I posted this only recently, in response to kind help from Thomas.)

(I will appreciate comments and corrections, too.)

Do you want to put all Bat mail folders in alphabetical order perhaps?
But do you also want some *other* kind of overriding order, "above"
alphabetical order? I do.

To order only alphabetically, click the large bar (with the single
word "folder") just above the display of the folder hierarchy. Then
answer "yes." BUT before that, notice . . .

Are you sure you want ALL of your account re-ordered?

It does not seem possible to re-order only the folders contained in
just one folder. The entire account - including Inbox etc. - will be
reordered alphabetically. It can be messy. Folders of filtered mail
will mix with Inbox and Outbox and Sent, for example.

You will notice that you can use numbers (1, 1.09, 2.0, 2.009 as
prefixes for folder names) and other symbols before letters, as a way
of overriding strict alphabetical ordering.

Next chore?

Having my filter folders automatically created within a folder, so
filter folders do not mix with the entire account.

Ideas anybody?

Re: FAQ's and sealing wax

2001-04-17 Thread David Robert Austen

There's a usability issue here in the discussion of FAQs.

Makes sense that "newbies" be asked to contribute some special FAQs
for other newbies. "Old pros" can "look over the shoulder" and be sure
the facts are right.

But the newbie's own descriptions and labels (nomenclature) will
likely be more appropriate for the other newbies that have general
questions.

It is very difficult for "senior users" to anticipate the newebie
questions and remember how puzzling it all was for us.

Hell, I'm still puzzled a lot of the time.

My two cents.

MDP in tears :-(.

DRA Anyway . . . do you know the answer to my question?

MDP Actually, I don't and I'm not certain that I have ever seen the option
MDP you are "missing". It may be to do with the language pack or the CSAPI
MDP interface.

DRA I was asking for help and thought, well, that this would be safe and
DRA perhaps even a friendly place. . .

MDP You were - honest :-). The real problem with replying half way down an
MDP old thread to create a new one is that you question *will* get
MDP overlooked.

Re: DRAFT

2000-10-23 Thread David Robert Austen

I first have to remove the hourglass symbol from the message, and then
I can easily delete it.

But I have a follow-up question. What is it that causes me to have
messages in the Outbox that I know I have already send?

That is pretty confusing.

David Robert Austen

RC Sir,

RC How do I remove obsolete Draft messages from my Outbox. I cannot
RC seem to "delete" them.

JA Hello Marck,

JA On Thursday, October 12, 2000 at 04:35:51 GMT +0100 (which was 8:35 PM
JA where I live) witnesses say Marck D. Pearlstone typed:

JA I just want to clarify one point:

 Your message, for
instance, had the ID [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is
JA^^ ^^
JARandom MMDDHHSS
JANumber

JA So the messageID is generated with a large random number then the time
JA stamp from your computer to 1/100th of a second. I'm sure you can't
JA send messages that quick to get duplicates. Plus with the random
JA number, the chances are *very* slim.

Kill Dupes - and what else possibly?

2000-10-12 Thread David Robert Austen

I am occasionally astounded to see the number of duplicate messages
that are reported deleted when I order "Kill Dupes."

Is there more going on here than I think?

Are there situations e.g. where a like-named message is killed when it
is in fact a different message within the same thread? For example,
the same author may respond twice to the same thread. I think file
size would be perhaps the most reliably meaningful and absolute
measure of a difference.

I guess the bottom line is this: what kind of comparison checking is
done to ensure that only true dupes are killed? Can we modify this?

Everybody out there feeling really confident in this default
technique?

Still feeling astounded,

David Robert Austen

Repairs successful after Bat nearly done in by disk defragmentation

2000-10-05 Thread David Robert Austen

Greetings, and thank you for this generous coaching.

Your answer was logical, and most of it did not surprise me, but if I
attempted that earlier it did not work. I was certainly flummoxed. I
also did not know about the SHIFTCTRLALTL.

BTW, Eudora made a nice back-up mail reader - set up so that messages
were left on the server.

That system "failure" has now gone away and I have now been able to
get at most of my old data. Nice coincidence that I had backed up the
entire hard disk just a few days earlier.

Did the disk defrag (as possible cause) ring a bell with you? I have
never had a bad result with it that I can remember, but I know others
who resist doing it.

Thank you again.

David
