It is possible.
You can use the average spam score as spam judge, but you can

Whether you use a spam filter or not, it is handy to do 2 things:

1. Use positive filters in TB to move desired mail to separate
folders. Also add a filter to move "Known" mail to a "Welcome" folder
or similar name.

2. This leaves any unfiltered junk in the "Inbox", where you click on
the Subject heading to sort alphabetically by subject. ( You do this

You don't need an external program mailwasher for that, you can use TB's
mail dispatcher instead (menu "Account", "Dispatch Mail on Server").

However, I find previewing messages both irrational and time consuming.
Emails are usually rather small and thus they are quickly downloaded,
usually within a couple of seconds (depending on your internet
connection). It will take an equal or larger amount of time to manually
evaluate the message with a preview/dispatcher function.

Besides the time it takes to manually preview messages and sort them,
the message headers will be downloaded anyway (with both mailwasher and
the dispatcher, doesn't matter). Depending on the type of message, the
header part may already be a large portion of the whole message. You can
download the entire message instead and have the spam filter handle it.
If you preview with Mailwasher you'll download the headers, and then
invoke TB and download the headers again (plus the message body of
course).

A good Bayes filter will take care of the offending messages after a
single training "click" in case it missed one. By the reports of people
posting to the TB lists, I conclude that both Agava and Regula are good
TB plugins. Personally, I am using K9, which is a lightweight and
reliable mail proxy with bayesian analysis, but it works only with POP3
accounts.

Click on 'Accounts' and select 'Filters' and click 'File' then 'New
Filter.

On the General tab give it a name, in the 'condition' box, select
'Subject Contains' and then add 'wrote:'. In the "action" section,
select what you want to do ... "move to folder \\JUNK" for example.

That should do it ... but only until they change the message content
which will happen pretty soon. That is a very inefficient way to try
and keep up with spammers. The other suggestions are helpful and more
useful in the long term. I use Agava FWIW and like it. But BayesIt
worked OK for me for a number of years too ... after I trained it with
a **LOT** of email and I needed to 're-train' it once or twice a year
for some reason.

I can't help you with a filter but K9 (http://keir.net/k9.html) is
catching them all with no problems plus those stock "tips" that just
include an image and a sea of irrelevant drivel. I tried AntiSpam

Unless your Spam-plugin is giving you false positives, I don't know why you
should do that. Of course I'm a K9-user, I never really tried Bayes-It or
Bayes filter, since I'm using K9 for more than one mailer. So I'm not
acquainted with the way those plugins work.

I use the "X-Brightmail: Suspected Spam" header(field)(1) in a TB!-filter to
collect those messages that were not caught by K9, I do not use it to keep K9
from testing them...

I think (but others may know more about this) you should look for something
like
X-Spam-Status: Yes and
X-Lycos-AS:?? (more than 50? I don't know at what % a message is
   considered to be Spam)

FYI - a couple of month ago I started to get really naughty spam mails, an
HTML part with one or two javascript-encoded target links, and an
alternative text part that contained randomly collected "normal" sentences,
like in an email, or a publication, something like that.

They got thru K9 (the bayesian spam filter that I am using) regularly, but
I kept training the filter, and after one week about 50% of these were
recognized, after another week of training every message was caught. So,
just keep training the thing.

(and for 10 days now, K9 runs at 100% accuracy:-)

FWIW, since a couple of days 100% all Spam is captured.

K9 did a good job before, but there was a type of spam that it couldn't
catch. I was able to capture ± 50% of that sort of mails by a combination of
rules.

It was because I wasn't able to catch the other 50% of what K9 missed, that I

I have lately seen how my spamfilter is getting less efficient. I wounder
whither the filteringmodel will be affected negatively by the increasing
amount of "unique" spelling in certain mails.
  (Including this one :P )

Also I've seen some spamers use the lists most common subjectlines.
(for example: #Bugreport 123456789 bla bla bla) as it infact may be a
spammail.
I have tried to train my bayesian mailfilter made by Achim Winkler to sort
such mails out but not been successful - yet...

I fear I have to start all over again train that @"#%3!Ϥ filter again...
Is there a shortcut getting back on track?

-Oh! I allmost forgot. I have blended subscriptions to various discusionlists
in different languages in subfolders. How have you seen this affect the
  filtering efficiency in your cases.

I added both as separate filters as the last ones in my set of filters
and the result was that any mail without a special destination went
into my spam box
I must have done something wrong(g) I guess
Its not a complaint but if nobody else has mentioned this, drop me a
not off line
I tend to filter all my mail into specific boxes so that maybe 10 or
so are left over in the inbox.
I also refiltered my inbox (as it had grown to about 1000 emails which
didnt have a special place ) and the whole lot went happily to my spam
box...

Best regards,

tracer

Hello David,
If you have any more creative filters for jumping off points, I could
sure use the nudge. Just getting started here, but spam drives me
crazy too!

Do you ever get two spams from the same email address though? It
rarely happens because the from address is almost always fake. This is
useful on newsgroups for ignoring people, but less useful for spam. A
better idea is to pick some creative filters.

I have two filters:

A lot of spam mentions some supposed email bill, so this works nicely

1) Location: Text
   String: Section 301
   Presence: Yes
   Move messages to: spam
   Set colour to: brown

A lot of spam gets sent directly to my ISPs server, usually from
someone on a dial-up, using software that does DNS lookups on email
addresses and telnets into the destination server directly. These
emails will only have a single "Received" header usually. It excludes
email from my ISP which might legitimately only have one Received
header, and notifications about large attachments from The Bat.

2) Location: Kludges
   String: ((?s)Received.*){2,}
   Presence: No

   and

   Location: Sender
   String: (.*freeserve.*)|(Bat)
   Presence: No

   Use regular expressions.
   Action as above

Suggestion re spam mail

2000-08-13 Thread John Phillips

Hi fellow Bat! fans,

In Gravity News Reader there is a "bozo bin" option to dump a sender
without making a filter. Each bozo can be edited as to length of
  the bozo bin filter etc.

I am getting more & more spam these days, and I am sure this idea
would help a lot of Bat! users, or is there another way to handle
  these pests?
