It is a bit challenging, as synchronisation does not mean the same in
TB! as it does in, say, Laplink, where there is a transfer of files
both ways.

Basically, TB! copies messages that are not one the target machine
(the one where you run Step A) from the source machine (the one at
Step B). It is a one-way process and it only adds messages and does
not delete them. The messages have to be in the same location, so you
can end up with duplicates if your messages are moved by a filter on
one machine and not on the other.

My synch plan is as follows - an example probably helps!:

1 I want to bring my laptop up to date with messages that I have
received on my PC since I last used it. I therefore start running
the synch process on my laptop with Step 1 - the file is copied to
a shared folder on my PC, across the network, although it would
also work saving it to a usb memory stick.

2 Step 2 is run on my PC - this takes the file created in step 1 and
identifies all the messages that are on the PC but not on the
laptop, and copies them to the next Synch file.

3 The final step, Step 3, is run on the laptop. This copies all the
messages not on the laptop (in the same account/folder) into the
locations they are on the PC.

That is it - all the messages on my PC are now on my laptop.

There are a couple of things to note:

- It is assumed that the account and folder structures are the same,
and that the same filters are operating on both machines. I used to
wipe my laptop message base every few months and then restore it
from the PC to ensure that the folders and filters are the same, but
I don't bother now. If the structures are different, you will end up
  with a mess!

- The process is one way - Messages not in the machine on which you
run step 1 are copied from the machine in Step 2. If you want to do
a two-way synch you have to run Synch again, starting with the other
  machine at Step 1.

- The process does not delete messages. If I were to spend a lot of
time cleaning the message base on my laptop, and then run a synch
with my laptop at Step 1, it will copy all the messages back again.
the process only looks for missing messages and copies them.

- It does not appear to work with filters and account settings,
despite what it says. It does work with the address book however. You
have to copy filters manually, or recreate them manually.

I don't synch in the other direction (from Laptop to PC), as all the
messages are held on the server and I download them when I am next at
my PC.

I hope that this helps

Hmm, maybe you actually figured out how it worked. 'Way back in
3.80.06 I tried syncing my TB! and Voyager clients using Tools >

Ritlabs support said this:

Well, not quite broken, but this feature became obsolete and sometimes does not
do what it is expected to do. We plan to completely rework and simplify it in
future. How soon we do not know.

At present, as things are, we would suggest you to keep your e-mail on the
server for a certain period of time and download them to both The Bat! and
Voyager. It's under the "Account/Properties/Mail management"
'''

I asked about syncing last August, you can see some of the thread at

I hope it is not going to be dropped - I use it all the time! I use
two computers, and I use Synchronize to ensure that the messagebase on
my laptop matches the messagebase on my PC. It is usually just a
one-way transfer across my network, from PC to Laptop - I use a shared
folder on my PC to hold the synch files.

How are you syncing between those two? For voyager I make a file
backup to whatever my local computer is, in case I lose the usb drive.

Synchronization in TB! 3.99.3 - Slow

2007-05-15 Thread Julian Beach (Lists)
Hello TB! Users,

I have just installed 3.99.3 and am doing my first synchonize between
my PC and Laptop with this version. It is really slow, and eats
resources. Has anyone else experienced this? Previous versions have
been getting faster, so this appears to be a step backwards.
