%email% is a bespoke environment variable added by The Bat!. I've not
personally encountered another mail client that uses it.

Clicking on a website mailto calls whatever mail client is set as the
default in the BROWSER. If you're using FireFox, the procedure to set
its default mail client is:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-program-used-open-email-links

Interrogate the web for the same procedure in other browsers. Someone
will have an answer.

What happens when you click a mailto link in a web browser is going to depend
on the browser you're using. Internet Explorer will use the Windows settings
for file/protocol associations. I think Chrome shares those settings as well.
Firefox, however, has its own independent settings that you have to configure
in the browser (under the Applications tab in Settings). I assume setting the
file associations in TB! sets itself up in the Windows file associations, but I
wouldn't necessarily trust that's working. You should manually inspect that
list to make sure things are configured as you expect.

The place you do NOT want application data (whether email client or
any other software) is in any directory created
by Windows itself. Ideally on a separate disk (I can do this on one
of my laptops, but the newer ones don't have physical space for a
second hard disk unless you lose the CD/DVD drive), but at the very least
on a separate partition from the Windows partition.

As for %email", it did actually point to the same place as Options,
Preferences in The Bat. This surprised me as no matter how many times
I set The Bat as "default mail program", clicking on mailto on
websites opens "compose message" in Eudora (if it is running) and
starts Eudora if it isn't. This may happen for other people who have
more than one email client installed eg. Outlook or Thunderbird as
well as The Bat.

It COULD go into the programdata folder ... I have mine on another drive but
even putting it in My Documents would work. If you have any trouble, check the
folder/file permissions. They can get you all messed up in windows 8

Yes, it should ~not~ be put there, because user modifiable files are not
supposed to be placed in any Program Files subdirectory. (Although this was
once entirely possible in some earlier versions of Windows, this is now
verboten for security reasons.)

Typing %email% into the WinEx address bar yields:

As Feli suggested, Options/Preferences/System shows: %APPDATA%\The

So, two ways of getting the information.

This is how I do it:

Copy the Email data folder (with sub-folders) to the new computer.
Install TB from MSI and point it to this folder.
TB sees this folder and sets up the accounts.

I have used this technique for many years. BTW, I recommend moving to
