Hello Syafril,

Friday, Friday, October 22, 1999, you wrote:

Syafril Hello tracer,

t This is an oversized email, anything more then 2 mb should be
t avoided.

Syafril Are you saying all picture document (*.html, *.bmp, *.jpeg etc) must
Syafril be below 2 MB ? I have no problem with *.tif or *.ppt; only *.bmp
Syafril makes the problem. Even 65 pages of FAX image not making The Bat!
Syafril working so hard.

Syafril This morning, I got *.bmp attachment too, the mail size 16 MB...and
Syafril The Bat! crash with error message "Exception EOutofMemory in Module
Syafril thebat.exe at 000117598".
If I received 16 mb of bmp in one email I would be rather rude to the
sender or better he to me as he would get it back... My mailserver
will kick big attachments back and anyway a BMP should never be send
as BMP, same with DOC/XLS and similar bloated stuff and it gets
bounced or dumped...
You probably blew some buffer in the bat..
You are running NT with 64 mb so you would be unlikely to see this
problem from 98 anyway but 64 mb under NT is NOT a lot of ram...
ie extensive disk usage is likely if you want to see a 16 mb file.

§yafril" Then  I  close  TB, start again and disable HTML auto-view;
§yafril" now I need around 2 minutes to view the message (IMHO still
§yafril" not "normal", too slow). To open the attachment, I need
§yafril" around 5 minutes, change the setting to external viewer,
§yafril" then I just need 1 minutes.
Is the hard disk light on all the time, it may be moving things to and
from swapfile if it does...

t Use ACDSEE

Syafril What's the purpose of this software ?
Its one of the nice graphical viewers, shareware though but fast and
nice.

t I never see them, BMP, EXE, DOC and XLS are considered spam by my
t setup and get zapped off my server.

Syafril I can't do that. As the postmaster, I will receive all bounce messages
Syafril (note: the msg I got this morning is bounce message, it send to one of
Syafril our user but exceded the quota limit, so route to me). And as
Syafril FAXmaster, I will receive all FAXmessage which failed to route to the
Syafril end user (we use OCR module to detect to whom the fax message address
Syafril to).
(snip)
Sorry for saying it, if you are the postmaster, start educating your
endusers.
depending on your setup either ask/tell or stimulate them and if its a
favour you do them tell them you have changed to more stable software
but it has a few restrictions like sized on emails and attachments and
anything larger then 2 mb route it back to sender.
After someone has a bounced 16 mb back he will learn very quick.
BMP's should be zipped/rarred or if just send for looking, they should jpeg
them. Sending 16 mb bmp as BMP in one email is so silly nobody should
blame you for stopping that.
If they really need it, tell them to ftp.
And tell them its hanging your system and that this can result in lost
emails/attachments. If you are the 'expert' for the endusers make it
sound a bit worse then it is but get them to use winzip/winrar or
something making jpegs. Unless you like receiving 16 mb files all
blown up by the encouding in maybe 20 mb emails.

t Now on the other hand I have noticed that if the bat has been open
t for a while and you edit and look many things, system gets slower
t and slower.

Syafril I have no experience like that.
Syafril What's other software running concurently beside The Bat! ? Perhaps
Syafril some application refuse to time out.
You obviously havent got the same problem we have, you are blowing limits
due to oversized msgs they shouldnt send in the first place BUT it
could be related...

t I have 256 mb ram and essentially it ends freezing after a few
t hours. I suspect a nice leak in memory and non released resources
t due to file openings and closures being the reason.

Syafril I am using P-II/266 and (only) 64 MB RAM here, but everything running
Syafril fine. Have you check your RAM using tools such Check-it or others ?
donot worry, hand selected ram, I build that machine myself, and while it has
a few problems, ram is 100% even when I run special stress software,
system is rock stable.
I would say 99% sure I got a leak if I knew exactly what leaked I
would tell them.

Best regards,

tracer

My computer also freezes after c ouple of hours of work and I also
suspected the same as you. A memory dump (mem/d in dos) does not
provide any evidence, so I kept my mouth (keyboard) shut.

If there are unreleased resources, they could be caused by number of
other programmes I use all day opening and closing files.
