We're also trying to keep track of the places where automated testing happens
as part of the Fedora module developer's guide at
https://docs.pagure.org/modularity/development/building-modules/testing.html

I think the key item we have there that hasn't been mentioned in the thread yet
is your own automated tests at
https://github.com/fedora-modularity/compose-tests

Cheers,
Nick.

P.S. It's entirely plausible that we're missing some aspects of the automated
testing setup for the modular server builds, so issue reports and PRs to
correct omissions at https://pagure.io/modularity are most welcome.

Fedora 27 Retrospective is live!

2017-11-13 Thread Sumantro Mukherjee
The Retrospective page for Fedora 27 QA is now up:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Fedora_27_QA_Retrospective

We use the retrospective page to track things that went well and things
that didn't go so well during the Fedora 27 validation process, and for
tracking ideas we have but don't have time to act on during the rush of
doing validation (that's the wishlist).

Please, add any feedback you have of this type to the retrospective
page! There are instructions on the page for adding feedback.

All feedback is useful, and once 27 retrospections is done, we'll take a
look at all the items on the page and come up with specific
recommendations for addressing them which we'll file as pagure issues and
work on in the time before Fedora 28 validation starts up. We've been
doing this for a while now and it's turned out to be a great way to keep
constantly improving our processes.

You can look at the previous pages for inspiration:

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Category:QA_Retrospective

And here's an old list of leading questions to prompt
feedback:

 1. Were you able to participate in any Fedora 27 Alpha, Beta or
Final test runs?
 2. What worked well, what prevented you from participating, were
instructions clear?
 3. What worked (or didn't work) well about Fedora Test Days this
release?
 4. Are you a maintainer, why do you think your critpath updates
haven't been tested? What could you do to encourage more
testing of your proposed updates?
 5. Did you escalate any bugs for consideration as
{Alpha,Beta,Final} release Blockers? Why not? Was the process
well documented and did it make sense?
 6. Did you attend or contribute to any Fedora blocker meetings?
Why not? What did you like, dislike? What prevented you from
participating?
 7. Did you find any of the release criteria changes or validation
test extensions particularly useful or problematic?
 8. Can you think of any obviously important areas we are not
currently covering the validation tests and criteria?

Thanks

All the netinstalls are based on the exact same boot image, the only
difference should be the product image file that does a bit of
installer UI customization for defaults and stuff, including what
package set (Software Selection default button) is chosen. So I'd
expect there to be maybe a 1MB difference between them.

Sure. The Workstation and Everything netinst images. The Everything
netinst is in fact produced (and considered release blocking) more or
less specifically for this purpose.

Ok. I've been, for many releases, chosing the server netboot and gotten
minimal install from its software selection. This is the first time it's
given me different repos. As mentioned, I can use the workstation boot,
I just prefer downloading some kind of net install. I'll probably just go
to using the workstation from now on. Heh, sounds like I'm pouting,
saying that in a sulky voice.

It seems to save a few hundred MB off the workstation boot, probably closer
to the size for the old server boot. Fortunately, I don't (yet) have a
bandwidth cap so it's more a matter of what I've been used to using being
changed. :)

Thanks to both Chris and Adam for clarifications.

Minimal installs haven't ever been Fedora Server though. But maybe you
want a minimal install and then group install server?

Anyway, with the existing getfedora.org, at the very bottom is and
option, Alternative Downloads. That takes you here:

https://alt.fedoraproject.org/

If you download Everything, it's a netinstaller that includes a
Software Selection option and in there is a minimal install as well as
Fedora Custom OS, and the F27 version has the same interface and
options.

Ok, to update myself, I see that there is a 500 MB Workstation boot (going
by the nightlies) which is only a bit bigger than the server boot, and that
it offers the minimal install. So, that will do, enabling me to do my
usual minimal install and get the normal Fedora repos.
Thanks.

That's a bit of a pity for those liking to do minimal installs.
Are there going to be any available net installs that, by default, install
the standard Fedore repos instead of the modular server ones?
I would be surprised if I'm the only one who likes to install that way.
Obviously, there are workarounds, but it would be nice if something similar
was available by default.

The nightlies code basically treats non-modular and modular 27 composes
as interchangeable: it'll display whichever came most recently. I could
change this, but I haven't bothered.

However, it is in fact correct that the non-modular Server images for
F27 aren't really considered a part of the release. They were produced
for all nightly and candidate composes, including the final release,
but I believe the plan is not to include them in the modified compose
that is actually sent out to mirrors as the release, and not to promote
them in any way.

If you know how to get them from the RC compose you can of course still
go ahead and use them...but Modular Server is the only supported Server
edition for F27, AIUI.

And, it seems this may just be on the nightlies page. Looking at
mirrors.kernel.org in F27-Beta, it seems the normal server netinstall iso
is available. If that's the case, everything's fine as far as I'm
concerned.

Server downloads

2017-11-13 Thread Scott Robbins
I'm hoping that I'm overlooking something here. I installed Fedora-27 from
a nightly a few weeks ago. I downloaded a server boot only, installed
minimal, and everything was normal.

Today, doing a VirtualBox install, all I saw available was the modular
server. So I used that, and again chose minimal.

However, the only repos available are the modular server repos. In
contrast, the other install has the standard fedora repos that were
installed, as they've always been, during a standard install.

Is there now only going to be a modular server with modular server repos
available? This seems a regression to me, but I'm suspecting that I've
overlooked something obvious.

I'd see that as a separate test. Testing the module list functionality
is one thing, defining and checking a set of minimum content for the
default Server install is another...

2017-11-13 Thread Irina Gulina
Dear Sumantro,

Did you talk to DNF QE team? I suggest you coordinate your work with Karel Srot
from DNF QE team. There is a tool to test DNF and I know Karel already has a
good set of tests which covers Modular side of DNF [1], just missing some user
stories.

There is also a regular DNF Devs and DNF QE mtg, where we discuss all around
DNF QA and particularly Modular DNF, and if you want to contribute you are
welcome to join, just please ping Karel all about it.

Also please mind we have a modular DNF BZ tracker [2].

Looks good, though we should probably add a set of modules that *must* be
enabled/disabled on the default install. It doesn't need to address all
possible modules in the list, but we should have a minimum set that must be
correct.

> [2] Enabling & Disabling modules:

This test doesn't actually validate that the enable/disable correctly
happened. At minimum, the results should be tested by repeating [1] and
confirming that the values have changed. At best, we should have a set of
packages known to install or fail to install that we use to prove the state.

>
> [3] Install & Update :

This page looks reasonable, but there are numerous typographical errors
(including some in the commands) that should be corrected.

It should also add a test for switching streams (e.g. verify that one can
install nodejs-8 and then switch it to nodejs-6).

This set of test cases needs to have a set of success conditions defined.
"It displays some text" isn't good enough for blocker criteria.
