[Texascavers] Bustamante beer mystery
Charlie Loving wrote: /We finally got to the trail and climbed the switch backs carrying a case of Carta Blanca. That was our supplies for the trek. We met Janey Calvert and Ed Alexander, Faye Chapman and Bill Johnson at the top and were follwed up by Geroge and Carlyn. We went in the cave and stashed our case of beer and then never found it again. That was the first cave trip of note./ I remember Arthur Simpson telling me that he hiked up to the entrance with a group once and while the others rested, he went in the entrance and surprised them all when he came out with a beer in his hand. hmmm? ___ Texascavers mailing list | http://texascavers.com Texascavers@texascavers.com | Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/texascavers@texascavers.com/ http://lists.texascavers.com/listinfo/texascavers

[Texascavers] Bustamante Shootout
Gun Battle Between Mexican Military and 60 Suspected Zetas BUSTAMANTE, NUEVO LEON - The Mexican Navy is releasing details on a shootout between Marines and 60 heavily armed suspected hit men for the Zetas. The Mexican Navy says Marines raided a ranch in Bustamante, Nuevo Leon late Sunday. That's about 70 miles west of Falcon Lake. The Navy says the shoot out began when a convoy headed to the ranch opened fire on a Mexican helicopter. Two helicopters supported 50 marines as they stormed the compound and killed 8 suspected Zetas. The rest scattered. No arrests have been reported. The Mexican Navy allowed cameras inside the ranch called La Languilla. The compound has four cabins. The main cabin looks like a hunting lodge. There is a trophy room with bucks mounted along he wall. A stuffed bear and puma were also found. Marines also found rooms were they say the Zetas slept and showered. Stock piles of clothes and food were also found. http://www.krgv.com/news/local/story/Gun-Batt... - Visit our website: http://texascavers.com To unsubscribe, e-mail: texascavers-unsubscr...@texascavers.com For additional commands, e-mail: texascavers-h...@texascavers.com

I am headed down there this weekend for a quick get away. I remember reading somewhere that they may let us back off trail but you have to get permission from the mayor or something. I was thinking maybe I could lay the groundwork on this trip... If only my memory was better or I could find the email I remember. Any help is appreciated! Cheers! Joe
[Texascavers] Bustamante video
A Hollywood production it was not. Wasn't meant to be. But it was pretty damned impressive for what it was. I could find technical faults with the video if that were what I was watching it for but I wasn't; I was looking to see how the commercial lighting and other development worked out and I was pleased with what I saw. I didn't know a person could take that many different shots in the entrance room alone and I've been there well over 40--maybe 50--times. There's a lot of stuff to see. Re: [Texascavers] Bustamante Status
An update about the Lampazos swimming hole, it was recently remodeled and looks pretty good, in fact there's still some remodeling going on, but is open to the public. Get there early morning if you wanna go on a Sunday cause it gets packed! Palmito might be closed, but I know Rogelio the gatekeep and he told that he can get me in if I wanna visit the lower part of the cave (below the breakdown slope) so if anybody wants to go let me know and I'll see what I can do. I might swing by to say hello during labor day weekend Nico typing minutes before leaving for Bustamante for a family gathering, and Im officially 23 yo now On 8/18/07, David Locklear dlocklea...@gmail.com wrote: There are plenty of fun things to do around Bustamante, without going to Palmito. You could relax under a shade tree and read a book. http://academic.emporia.edu/mooredwi/mexico/bustamante004.jpg Depending on your company, you could sit around a small fire at night and enjoy a quiet relaxing evening. You could always ridgewalk the canyon and look for caves.I believe a 1974 issue of the Texas Caver shows the location of about 12 caves in or near the canyon. You could hike up to Precipicio just to spend the night in the entrance and do a photo-trip of the horizontal section of the cave. This would not require taking rope and vertical gear. However, I would rather do that in the winter. http://www.cavetexas.org/mexico/precipage.html You could do some bicycling in the canyon. You could hike up some of the peaks around Bustamante; but again, that would be more fun in the winter. There are the petroglyphs west of the canyon. Some of them are very interesting. There is the large drawing of an ancient Coke Bottle or rocket-ship.And there is one drawing that looks like a horizon with 2 suns and then a dashed arched line leading over to another horizon with just one sun. There is a tiny cave near the route up to Precipicio. If you are at the swimming hole and look up at the banana shaped ridge it is in the ravine to the right of the ridge and nearly all the way up to the wall of the cliff. The entrance is about 4 foot around that you stoop walk into.It is walking passage for about 75 feet. I don't believe you would see it even if you were standing right below it, as it is covered with heavy brush.( we were lost when we stumbled on to it ). [ I doubt there is anymore cave there, and you would need dynamite to extend the cave any further ] And there is the town of Bustamante itself: I think there is something nostalgic about going there. http://www.cavetexas.org/mexico/bustafan.html I had more fun there on my first trips in 84 and 85 than I had the last times I was there.Hurricane Gilbert did quiet a bit of damage to the canyon.I have had old-timers tell me that it was even more fun when the highway to Bustamante was a gravel road. You can spend the evening on the plaza chatting with people and practicing your Spanish. You can taste some of the food in the restaurants like hamberguesas or huevos estrellados. And Bustamante bread is famous all over Mexico. It is a sweet bread with pecans that are fresh and right off the trees from an orchard there.I believe the bread comes in 6 different flavors and 3 different shapes. http://www.nl.gob.mx/pics/pages/bustamante.base/TERCIARIA_CULTURA_r11_c8.jpg And there are tons of things to do within an hour or 2 of Bustamante: There are other caves to visit.Carrizal used to get a lot of visits by cavers.I haven't heard much since some Monterrey cavers claimed they caught Histo there a few years ago. It is a fun cave to visit, and it used to be easy to get persmission. I would recommend wearing a respirator at least in the dry upper entrance.Once you get further down the steam passage you should be able to take it off. Who has been there lately?? Maybe that is a bad time to visit a bat cave, however, I seem to recall the bats took over a side passage to the cave and were not as prevalent in the stream passage. And there are 3 very nice caves up at Minas Viejas. I think it about an hour south of there to the famous rock-climbing area. Another thing you could do would be to leave your car at the Hotel Ancira and take a bus to Monterrey and see the town, and take the bus back ( or a taxi ).You can probably pay the hotel a parking fee and then stay the night in Monterrey. You can probably also leave your car there if you don't want to leave it alone in the canyon while you are away caving ( assuming you have

Last week I talked to Don Felipe, owner of the Ancira Hotel in Bustamante and yesterday I talked to Jorge Santos, Mayor of Bustamante. They provided an update on what has been going on at the cave. The new access tunnel was completed last year from a point just up the trail from the upper parking lot into the first room at the base of the entrance slope. The trails and lighting in Grutas del Palmito were completed in time for this year's Easter week holiday and there were some 5,000 visitors to the cave during that week. The cave was then closed to the public in preparation for widening and paving the road from El Cono up the mountain to the new entrance. Equipment for this work has been arriving this week and work is to start next week. No estimated completion date was provided. Because of the road work, the cave is closed to access for the time being. Assuming Hurricane Dean doesen't come into South Texas or Northern Mexico, Rune, Susan, Jan and I are planning to be in Bustamante over Labor Day weekend for a relaxing holiday. Cave or no cave, Bustamante is a great place to spend some time. I'll give you an update on the cave after Labor Day. You can probably also leave your car there if you don't want to leave it alone in the canyon while you are away caving ( assuming you have another way to get to the cave ). You could possibly travel south to tour the commercial cave at Villa Garcia. I would stop at the swimming hole in Lampazos and take a look at it. Back in the 80's, I thought it was a good spot to stop and take a cool dip.But since then, every time I stopped it looked pretty bad. And there are 200 year old mines you could go check out. There are also fun things to do on the road-trip to and from Bustamante. There are some good restaurants along the border and some other establishments that are very enjoyable. I hope to go back to Bustamante someday. I married a girl who grew up less than 2 hours from Bustamante. In the 10 years we have been together, we have never been to the Bustamante area, and she has never been
Re: [Texascavers] Bustamante Project - Update?
RE: [Texascavers] Bustamante Project - Update?Mark, As of now, no one has come forward and volunteered to take over the coordination responsibility of the project. The only discussion I am aware of has been that on the Texas Cavers Discussion Group. It is to late to get a Labor Day Weekend Project going for this year but either a President's Day or Labor Day project could be put together for next year if one or two cavers stepped forward and pulled it together. Rune and I would both be willing to lend our knowledge of the project to anyone wanting to put it together. For those not familiar with the project, it has been going on for nine years either on the Labor Day or President's Day weekends. There is an E-mail discussion currently going on as to the project's future. I'm posting this on Texas Cavers list so that a wider group of cavers will know what is going on and can join in on the discussion. Orion Knox In case you haven't heard through the grape vine, we (Orion Rune) have announced our retirement as co-coordinators of the annual Bustamante Restoration Project after nine years at the helm. Age and other postponed projects have caught up with us. We had a Bustamante Project organizers meeting last Thursday to see if anyone was interested in taking over putting on this project. No one jumped at the opportunity either at the meeting or by other means of correspondence. We are now putting out a call to others who have had an interest in or participated in past projects to see if anyone wants the job. We, as well as others who helped organize the project in the past are willing to help out as time permits. The officials in Bustamante would be glad to host more projects as they have in the past and as everyone who has participated knows, we have accomplished a tremendous amount of beneficial work in and around the cave. The city and the State Department of Tourism have been very appreciative of our efforts and we can take pride in the work the Amigos de la Gruta have done. Although this world class cave has come a long way as far as restoration is concerned, much work remains. Should anyone be interested in coordinating future projects at Bustamante, contact Orion and Rune. Our sincere thanks goes out to the legions of folks who helped put the project together and put in thousands of hours of hard work these past years and made it the success it has been. Other decisions made at the meeting were that part of the project funds accumulated over the years will be spent on cave related books, hopefully in Spanish, to be given to Bustamante's library. With approval and coordination with city and State officials, we would also like to spend another portion of funds on an interpretive exhibit either at El Cono or the facilities planned to be built at the entrance to the cave. Seed money will be held back to fund a future project if one develops. If no one comes forward to coordinate a project this year, several of us still plan to spend the Labor Day weekend in Bustamante to see how the development in the first room of the cave has gone and just relax in one of Mexico's most pleasant towns. [Texascavers] Bustamante Project 2006
Orion, Jan, Rune, and Susan visited Bustamante this past weekend to meet with the mayor and talk with Don Felipe about the project scheduled for February 18-20, 2006. All agreed that the project is a go. Orion explained this year's activities to the mayor. The mayor approved and said that even if work had begun on developing the road up to the cave, this should not interfere with the project because they would not be working on the weekend. The group visited the 3 hotels in Bustamante. All rooms at the Ancira will be available at $35 each, except that the 4 rooms with one double bed will be $30. Contact Jan at knox_...@hotmail.com to reserve your room. We visited La Casita, but the owner wasn't there and the gardner said that a room with 2 double beds is $48. There are 20 rooms. The phone # listed on the Bustamante web site is (829) 246 03 16. We got a business card from Hotel Chimenea's Inn. The phone numbers listed are (829) 246 04 43 or 245 02 43. The Chimenea's appears to have 7 or 8 rooms. No one was there so we didn't get a price. Don Felipe agreed to provide the Sunday night banquet at the Ancira at a cost of $8.00 per person, including non-alcoholic drinks and a cash bar. Attached is an updated list of Project Organizers. Still lacking are crew chief's for graffiti removal along the road, a parking lot attendant at the upper parking lot, and campground security. Also, we will need vehicles to transport volunteers from El Cono to the upper parking lot. Please contact Orion or Rune if you are interested in any of these positions. 2006 PRESIDENT'S DAY PROJECT February 18-February 20, 2006 Project Organizers ( ? subject to acceptance of positions) As of December 6, 2005 PROJECT COORDINATORS: Bob (Rune) Burnett - bburne...@austin.rr.com (512-459-0505) Orion Knox - orion-k...@alumni.utexas.net (512-453-4070) PROJECT TREASURER: Alana Hussing- al...@wholeearthprovision.com (512-476-4811 ext. 39 (w) / 830-833-0376 (h) PROJECTS: SURFACE TRAIL IMPROVEMENT: Project Coordinator: Phillip Russell - adonfel...@aol.com (512-458-4518) Dave DeGroot - davedegr...@yahoo.rr.com (512-443-9002) GRAFFITI REMOVAL: Project Coordinator/Cave: Aimee Beveridge - aimee...@sbcglobal.net (512-444-4881) Project Coordinator/Exterior Cave: Rune Burnett - bburne...@austin.rr.com (512-459-0505) (CREW CHIEF NEEDED) BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION: Bob (Rune) Burnett - bburne...@austin.rr.com (512-459-0505) Orion Knox - orion-k...@alumni.utexas.net (512-453-4070) BRUSH TRIMMING ALONG ROAD TRAIL: Project Coordinator: Terry Plemons - tplem...@mail.utexas.edu CAVE CLEANUP: Trash sacks will be handed out at registration and at cave entrance and tools for step cleaning will be provided at cave LIGHTING IMPROVEMENT: Project Coordinator: Orion Knox - orion-k...@alumni.utexas.net (512-453-4070) Tom Brown (?)- cavei...@yahoo.com OFF TRAIL VISITATION GUIDELINES: Aimee Beveridge - aimee...@sbcglobal.net (512-444-4881) TASK COORDINATION: First Aid / Search Rescue: Tom Brown -(?)- cavei...@yahoo.com / nbca...@satx.rr.com home - 830-609-5973 / - 210-699-8585 Permission to Hold Project / Coordination with City: Orion Knox - orion-k...@alumni.utexas.net (453-4070) Rune Burnett - bburne...@austin.rr.com (512-459-0505) Coordination with City on Camping: Orion Knox orion-k...@alumni.utexas.net (453-4070) Rune Burnett - bburne...@austin.rr.com (512-459-0505) Coordination with Hotel Ancira on Banquet Food: Terry Plemons - tplem...@mail.utexas.edu (512-263-3075) Charlie Loving - lovingchar...@hotmail.com (Plemons to coordinate) Book Keeping: Alana Hussing- al...@wholeearthprovision.com (512-476-4811 ext. 39 (w) / 830-833-0376 (h) Pre-Registration on Site Registration: Rae Nadler-Olenick Walt Olenick - mrnad...@mail.utexas.edu (512-371-3786) Door Prize Coordination: Susan Souby - sso...@austin.rr.com (512-459-0505) Cave Sign -In - Anne Souby - aso...@harcourt.com (512-451-4884) Campground Security: (NEED VOLUNTEERS) Construction Tools and Supplies Coordination: Rune Burnett - bburne...@austin.rr.com (512-459-0505) Lighting Supplies Coordination: Orion Knox - orion-k...@alumni.utexas.net (453-4070) Transportation To and From Cave-Coordination: Jim Kennedy jkenn...@batcon.org Drivers w/ trucks - Jim Kennedy jkenn...@batcon.org (512-663-2287) (ADDITIONAL TRUCKS NEEDED) Upper Parking Lot Attendant-(NEED VOLUNTEERS) Project Publicity: (US) Aimee Beveridge aimee.beveri...@rrc.state.tx.us (512-444-4881) / Rae Nadler-Olenick - mrnad...@mail.utexas.edu (512-371-3786) (Mexico) ?Peter Sprouse - pspro...@texas.net (512-?) This will be the ninth year that TSA has sponsored this project which has resulted in a dramatic improvement in the Grutas Del Palmito and surrounding area. It has drawn cavers, friends, family and folks just interested in doing a good deed at one of North Americas outstanding caves. Participants have come from several States in both the US and Mexico. In the early years truckloads of trash were hauled out of the cave and picked up around the upper parking and entrance area, concrete steps were installed in the first room, conservation, directional and interpretive signs in both Spanish and English were installed and graffiti was removed in the first room. Since that time an improved trail was constructed from the upper parking area to the entrance, the trail leading to Cabeza de Leon has been improved above the cave, additional trash has been picked up, graffiti has been removed along the road, brush has been cleared along the road and trails and a new hand rail was installed at the entrance. Inside the cave, the lighting system has been improved, a bridge was constructed at a dangerous spot on the tour trail, mud was removed from the steps and formations and, vast amounts of graffiti have been meticulously removed in all areas of this huge cave. It is truly amazing what a hundred or so dedicated folks can accomplish over a weekend. This year should be no exception. As in the past, Saturday will be the principle work day and Sunday will be devoted to field trips to area points of interest. There will be the much enjoyed banquet at the Ancira on Sunday night and the Monday morning tour of the Mescal factory on the way out of town. TexasCavers - Bustamante Project Registration and Hotel Rooms
While making some changes to the Bustamante 2006 Project web site, the registration form was inadvertently deleted for a few days. It is now back at the end of the web page ( http://home.austin.rr.com/ojknox/bustainfo.htm ) and ready for downloading. We would appreciate it if those participating in the project would pre-register so that we can better plan the work schedules and equipment needs and have registration packets ready to hand out. If you don't get your registration in on time, come on down anyway. There are a few rooms left at the Ancira Hotel. If you are interested, get in touch with Jan Knox at: knox_...@hotmail.com or at 512-453-4070 by February 11, 2006. The list will be sent to Don Felipe on the 12th. If there are any questions, contact Rune Burnett or Orion Knox. Rune Orion
